    BSOD When Using Nvidia GPU

So recently I've been getting BSOD ever so often that it's been bugging me pretty badly... It could happen randomly when I'm browsing the web or I can make it happen myself by launching some games with the Nvidia GPU. My touchpad would always stop working before it crashes for about a minute. However, there are many games that I CAN run perfectly fine with the Nvidia GPU. The two games that I'm sure always cause the BSOD are The Witcher and TERA Online. I've got into the habit of shutting down the laptop with the power button before it crashes because I can anticipate it happens when the touchpad becomes unresponsive.

There are also some other problems with this laptop that I feel I have to address as they may be related.

    1. My wireless signal randomly drops to one bar and just stops working, causing Google Chrome to just freeze randomly for about a minute or until I restart the wireless adapter for the signal to come back. It does not disconnect nor does it say that the connection is limited. It just simply drops down to a signal just can't load anything.
    2. About a week after I purchased the laptop I got a BSOD that made me unable to boot into the laptop. I forgot the details but I think I remember it being related to the hard disk. I had to reset the laptop using Dell's recovery software to get it to work again before I made a fresh install of windows 8.1.

The address of the error based on the dmp files is ntoskrnl.exe+1fc586

I have a geek squad membership as well as a warranty available so if this thing is unsolvable with moderate computer understanding (I can follow instructions ) just tell me.

    System specs:

    OS: Windows 8.1
    Model: Dell Inspiron 17 5748
    GPU: Nvidia GeForce 840m
    CPU: Intel i7-4510u

Here is the SF Debug file:

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

Do your still need help with this problem?
I will be notified if you reply to this topic and will respond within 48 hours.

These devices are disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?
VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1 ROOT\VMWARE\0000 This device is disabled.

VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet8 ROOT\VMWARE\0001 This device is disabled.

Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network) BTH\MS_BTHPAN\7&2B7FA2DD&0&2 This device is disabled.

Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8136&SUBSYS_06531028&REV_07\4&2BCE6759&0&00E3 This device is disabled.
    Please:
    - visit the VMWare and Dell websites to download the latest Win8.1 compatible version of the installer for each driver package
    - enable each of the devices
    - update the drivers
    - disable the devices again (if so desired)
    - monitor for further BSOD's

Game booster programs frequently have issues (I'm not familiar with this particular one). I'd suggest uninstalling it until the system has been stabilized.

What are you using HDD Regenerator for? Is there a problem with your hard drive?

What do you use EasyBCD for? What modifications have you made with it? Are there any issues (even only slight ones) when you boot?

Did you run Seatools on the hard drive? If so, what test(s) did you run and what were the results?

Are the Seatools, EasyBCD and HDD Regenerator for the reset of the system that you had to do a week after you got it?

I have seen frequent problems with ScreamingBee audio. The driver for it dates from 2010 - there's a good chance it's not compatible w/Win8.1. Please uninstall it while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to install the latest, Win8.1 compatible version once the system has been stabilized.

Ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates
Ensure that you use the Dell Update function to check for driver updates.

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

The drivers that are struckout don't have updates available (AFAIK).
DO NOT delete them, just leave them be.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

All these programs that I have were installed after the reinstall of windows. VMWare, GameBooster, Screamingbee, and EasyBCD were not in the first or second installations of windows.

As for Seatools and HDD Regenerator, I got those in my current install of windows to see if maybe there was a problem with my hard drive. According to Seatools, there was, and it could only be corrected by using the boot cd of seatools. Upon further research I figured it's probably a small problem with the hard drive and wasn't the issue. I mean, it seems to occur when I use certain GPUs and wouldn't have anything to do with the hard drive. Also the random wireless dropping I believe is related to the blue screen but can't be related to the hard drive.

Your last bit I don't understand. Do I only remove Screamingbee or is there anything else I should too?

EDIT: And about the disabled internet adapters I did that on purpose in hopes of it fixing the wireless.

    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!

In short, nearly everything has something to do with your hard drive. The programs that your computer runs are stored on your hard drive. When the system boots, it loads those programs from the hard drive. Also, your paging file is on your hard drive, and that's where the virtual memory is stored also.

What is the exact error that Seatools gave?
That being said, not all problems stem from hard drive problems - so there are other possibilities.

Are you still having wireless problems? Most wireless problems (like this) that I see at work are due to malware. Have you scanned the system with an independent malware scanner (in case yours is compromised?). If not, here's a page with links to free scanners. The page was made before Win8 came out - so you may have to try several of them to get one/two that work for you: Free Online AntiMalware Resources

Disabling things is an acceptable practice. BUT, most of the drivers still load during the boot process - and then the device is disabled later on. But the drivers remain loaded. While I suspect that there's not much going on with them, it is possible that they are seeing some activity - so updating them is important even though they are disabled.

Finally, there have been driver errors (which are most often due to drivers, but can be due to hardware). So here's a list of what we've got:
    - hard drive errors
    - wireless problems
    - video driver errors

    Now, what I do is:
    - first I rule out 3rd party drivers (over 90% of BSOD's are due to this)
    - then I rule out hardware (less than 10% of BSOD's are due to this)
    - then I look at Windows problems (less than 1% of BSOD's are due to this - as long as Windows Updates are fully up to date).

If I suspect hardware (which is a possibility in your case), then I'll ask you to do both 3rd party driver stuff and hardware stuff at the same time (it works out quicker for you in most scenarios).

I suggest that you uninstall Game Booster and Screamingbee audio. You can feel free to reinstall the latest, Win8.1 versions of these programs AFTER the system has been stabilized.

Then we wait and see if the BSOD's return. If they do, please zip up and upload the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump You may have to copy it to your Desktop in order to zip it up.

Do you have various different GPU's? If so, are they all nVidia or all AMD? How to you change them around? Do you freshly reinstall drivers for them when you switch cards?

Alright so I'll try and figure out a way to update all the drivers I have. Is there any safe program that could do that for me? I've seen plenty of driver updater programs but some of them come with malware and I'd rather not risk it. Any recommendations?

Once I'm done with that I'll send it back for a replacement.
