Solved BSOD Win 8.1 happening very often now

I seem to be getting more and more BSOD lately.
I've tried memtest+ and left it running for about 12 passes and more than a day with no problems.
I've run windows own memory test. I've checked cables are tight and parts are secure in the mb.

I'm at my wits end trying to track this down. I've tried numerous versions of ati graphics drivers with no change as it sometimes points to an amd file when it crashes.

I'll attach the zip from the forum tool that I have run to collect all my crash dumps etc,

I'd appreciate any help or pointers. Thanks for taking the time to read this and give me any suggestions.

I continue to see many problems with the Killer Network Manager software.
Please read this:
At times the Killer Network Manager may cause BSOD problems:
NOTE:Link thanks to blueelvis (15Oct2014): https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=178064.0 This is a method for removing all the network software and only installing the driver. Perfect for those issues that can't be resolved any other way!

NOTE: See this link first: http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...msi-gt70-dragon-edition-2-a-4.html#post358413 (thanks to kaelaan) It appears that the Killer Service problem was solved with the latest release of the Qualcomm versions of the drivers (so try updating to a version dated from later in 2014).
The Qualcomm Atheros Killer Service/KillerNetManager is known to cause BSOD's. Please follow the workaround instructions here:
First, open the Run dialog (Win + R keys) and type in "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Scroll down and locate the "Qualcomm Atheros Killer Service" and right click on it. Select "Stop"
Right click on it again and this time select "Properties"
In the dropdown box for "Startup type", select "Disabled", then click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the window

Next, open Task Manager (right click on TaskBar and select "Task Manager")
Click on the "More details" dropdown (if present)
Click on the "Startup" tab
Scroll down and locate the "KillerNetManager" entry, right click on it and select "Disable"
There may also be an Install Shield (with the Killer gaming K next to it), if so Right click on it and select "Disable"
Finally, restart the system in order for the changes to take affect.

At times the Killer Network Manager will continue to load. If so, it's usually listed in the MSINFO32...Software Environment...Startup Programs section. If it is, please try this:
It may be that the instructions aren't stopping everything.
In some cases, there's a program running out of the Program Files/Program Files (x86) directory.
"c:\program files\qualcomm atheros\killer network manager\killer~1.exe" (NOTE: killer~1.exe is most likely killernetmanager.exe)
In other cases, there's a program running out of c:\windows\installer\{Long string of letters, numbers, and dashes}\networkmanager.exe_130c27d738f34c89bddf21bcfd74b56d.exe (the long string of letters and numbers may change)

Here's some things to try
1) Please see if there are any entries in the Startup tab of Task Manager that are related to Qualcomm/Atheros/Killer Network Manager (and NOT the card itself) and disable them (please let us know what you find) Be careful as the wrong selection can disable the network card.
2) Check in "msconfig" for any entries that aren't in the Startup tab of Task Manager. Let us know if you find any Qualcomm/Atheros/Killer entries there (we'll disable them differently if they are there).
3) Locate the "c:\program files\qualcomm atheros\killer network manager\killer~1.exe" and rename the .exe to .BAD (the killer~1 is actually a filename that starts with killer and ends with .exe) There will be an error in event viewer, but it'll stop the bugger from loading.
4) Locate the "c:\windows\installer\{Long string of letters, numbers, and dashes}\networkmanager.exe_130c27d738f34c89bddf21bcfd74b56d.exe" entry and rename the last .exe to .BAD (the long string of letters and numbers may change)

Just FYI - here are the MSI workaround instructions: MSI USA - Online Technical Support FAQ

Out of 17 memory dumps there were 12 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- dirt/dust/hair/fur/crud inside the case. Blow out the case/vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or vacuum as they can cause damage to the system)
- missing Windows Updates
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers), older systems, or even pirated systems
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics
Skip the memory test as I only suggest 3 passes of MemTest86+

Uninstall MSI Afterburner/Riva Tuner/EVGA Precision/Sapphire Trixx as they contain drivers that are known to cause BSOD's

Update Intel Smart Connect Technology drivers as yours date from 2012

Hi and thanks.

I removed sapphire trixx, removed killer network all together just now since I can do without it for testing and updated intel smart connect. I thought about removing it but just left it for now.

I clean the inside of my case and fans every month or so and have filters or mesh over every hole in my case and over every fan. 4 case fans. I don't overclock and used trixx to underclock and undervolt my gpu sometimes.

It's not a pirated software problem as I don't have any such software installed and my windows was a legit 8 ipro install updated to 8.1

I've run hard drive tests using the drive manufacturers own software, even if the sandisk ssd software is basic. No problems showing there.

All the hardware is around 10 or 11 months old now.

Temp wise my cpu reaches around 57 C maybe a degree or two more at times if stressed and my gpu never goes over 70C even when I've stressed it with benchmarks or mining software.

I'll go through your testing pages and see if I can find some piece of software that throws up an error now.

Thank you for taking the time to help me, it's much appreciated.

NTIOLib_X64.sys is still present in this memory dump. It's usually related to the MSI Afterburner, Riva Tuner, EVGA Precision, and MSI Live Update software. Please be sure that these componets are removed. If the BSOD's persist and continue to expose this driver, then we'll take steps to manually remove it.

Beyond that, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

FYI - the memory dump "feels" like a hardware problem to me. Make sure that you run all the hardware diagnostics and we'll move on from there.

That NTIOLib file was installed with MSI Supercharger - a programme that allows increased charging rates via USB 3 ports with some devices. I uninstalled it now.

I have also updated my m/b BIOS. When I used the recommended method and the newest BIOS it borked my Intel ME so I reflashed the version before and used the built in flasher set to flash both the mb and Intel ME which worked.

Then I noticed the Windows 8.1 pro watermark at the bottom right of my screen. I had this before when I first updated to 8.1 but that time it just said secure boot wasn't enabled. I managed to enable that and it went away.
Slmgr showed my install was in Notification mode.
I take it the BIOS updates triggered this.

I ran the phone activation which got rid of the watermark and re-activated my install.

I also removed ATI Catalyst Control Centre and gpu drivers and reinstalled the latest beta version. This time I installed the drivers alone minus any of the added stuff including Catalyst Control Center.

Since then I have been waiting for the next crash...

My cpu temps are also high when running prime95 i.e. 79C but this is with the default Intel Cooler and Haswell cpus are known for this because of the TIM inside the cpu case instead of the lid being soldered on like previous versions of INtel CPUs.

My gpu temps are in the low 70s C as well but that's the default BIOS that lets the gpu temp reach this without ramping up the fan speed which is why I had trixx installed. I have got an updated gpu bios that fixes this but I just used trixx before to save flashing it.

Late for work again! :(
The driver blamed is your wireless driver - athw8x.sys
This could be a hardware problem with the wireless card,
It could be a software problem with the drivers
Or it could be a problem that's "referred" from another program that uses the wireless

First:
- download a fresh copy of the latest Win8.1 compatible version of the wireless drivers
- uninstall the current wireless drivers
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- monitor for further BSOD's

Next, a lot of the MSI systems have the Killer Network Manager. If you do, have a look at this:

PS - don't forget to turn Driver Verifier off. To do this, open up verifier.exe and select "Delete existing settings", then click on "Finish" and reboot for the changes to take effect.

Good luck!

I did have it running for a good while after updating my wireless drivers with the latest ones I could find from an unofficial atheros site since my actual pci e card maker has very old ones.

THis last crash is related to a directx file I think and seems to point to hardware according to windbg64.

I guess it's a case of stripping things out one at a time and trying the system for a while. Either that or a complete fresh install.
I guess it's easier to try with single memory sticks first, then the graphics adapter removed and using the cpu's onboard intel gpu and the wireless pci-e card removed.

Then I'd have to consider a new motherboard if none of that works.

If only my other computers weren't an Intel nuc and an AMD based HP microserver I could try swapping parts over

I've attached the dump again just in case you can think of something when you look at it.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me.

Just FYI - here's how I do BSOD analysis':
- first I rule out 3rd party drivers (over 90% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I rule out hardware (less than 10% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I look at Windows problems (less than 1% of BSOD's are due to this - as long as Windows Updates are fully up to date).

Unfortunately some 3rd party drivers can cause problems that make us think that it's a hardware problem - so we have to continue to rule them out even as we're trying to address a hardware problem (Windows drivers can also do this, but again are less likely to malfunction in this way).

Hardware stripdown sometimes helps narrow down the problem. Here's a link to a guide I made a while back: Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting

This memory dump blames hardware and it's an attempt to write to read only memory.
Have you tested your memory? By this I mean RAM, CPU, and video.
Here's the link to the free hardware diagnostics that I suggest: Hardware Diagnostics

From what you've described (and from the reports) the most likely culprit is the video card.

I think I have it solved now. I would think about doing this once I'd started stripping down the computer!
I backed the memory timings off. It was using the built in xmp profile but I backed it down to 666MHz (It's 1869/PC14900 so xmp is 933) and increased the timing delays a little.

Why I never thought of this before I don't know, considering I have 4 sticks which can increase problems compared to two.

Thanks for your help.

I'm glad that you figured it out! I'm not a real in-depth hardware kind of guy, so I don't often look at things like timings, etc. I prefer to set a system to default values and work from there.
