Unplugging power crashes system

Unplugging the power causes the system to crash.
This is especially bad with a slippery power plug.

I'd be immensely thankful for tips on getting the latest drivers.
I haven't figured out why Intel's utility for detecting my system (Intel® Driver Update Utility) won't work for me.
HP's Support Assistant doesn't install, and they don't show the latest drivers on their support pages.
Identifying the motherboard or chipset, and locating their drivers have been especially tricky for me.

The OS is the same core as Windows 8.1 Update, so it belongs here.

What sort of error do you get when trying to install HP Support Assistant?
I have issues with the Intel utility also, I chalk it up to it only being accurate on actual Intel systems.

You can manually download the drivers from HP if you visit the support site for your system.
Please be sure to update the UEFI/BIOS using the inside Windows installer.

Only 7 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 170 to 190 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Don't worry about the specific number, it's just important that you have checked and installed any updates that were available (and didn't experience any errors).

After the system is fully updated, try to install the HP Support Assistant again.
If you get it installed, make sure to run it and install ALL available updates.

If the system continues to BSOD after it's fully updated, then please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Thank you for writing.
I really appreciate you looking at this.
Did the system come with Win8/8.1 installed on it?
Windows 8
It's now running Windows Server (2012 R2 Update, same core as Windows 8.1 Update).
What sort of error do you get when trying to install HP Support Assistant?
I reinstalled just now to check.
It installs fine, but it doesn't run.
HPSF.exe has stopped working. This application has encountered a serious problem and must close.
Not very helpful.
Here's the event log.

I have issues with the Intel utility also, I chalk it up to it only being accurate on actual Intel systems.
It is a certified Intel system.
I suspect a permissions issue: the Intel utility may have needed a web browser running as Administrator, which I didn't do.
You can manually download the drivers from HP if you visit the support site for your system.
I do this, but they're outdated.
They only list drivers up to Windows 8 for my model when they show Windows 8.1 drivers for other models.
They seem to distribute the newest drivers only through Support Assistant: it seemed to crank out new drivers every few weeks when I had Windows 8.
Please be sure to update the UEFI/BIOS using the inside Windows installer.
I'd like to. If I knew the motherboard, I could probably get newer ones. Do you know how to identify it?
Only 7 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 170 to 190 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).
It's a fresh install with most updates built-in.
I got the most up-to-date install volume from Microsoft before reinstalling.
Windows Update says I'm up to date.
If the system continues to BSOD after it's fully updated, then please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
I'll do this, because I really need to get these drivers up to date.

Before I read your message, I tried plugging and unplugging the system during boot just to mess with it and see when it'd crash.
It didn't.
The boot process ran flawlessly and the system continued to resist crashing even after start-up.

Even though this appears to work (for now), the issue always comes back to haunt me (it's happened before after getting "solved").
I'd like to solve it for real.

I'm late for work. You can identify the motherboard (usually) using CPU-Z, and click on the Mainboard tab.
CPU-Z is free from here: CPU-Z CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

I've gotta wonder if the HP Support Assistant doesn't like the Server OS.
You might want to contact HP support to see if they have any solutions for the Server OS's

Hopefully Driver Verifier will allow us to focus on a particular driver.
Please zip up and upload the memory dumps once you've run it (and it has crashed)
You may have to copy them to your desktop in order to zip them up.

That program was quite helpful.
Unfortunately, it identifies my mainboard as an HP 181B, so I'm entirely reliant on HP's dismal support.
I've gotta wonder if the HP Support Assistant doesn't like the Server OS.
You might want to contact HP support to see if they have any solutions for the Server OS's
They usually say they don't design their laptops to support server OSs, as if a computer manufacturer has any say over what hardware software they don't create runs on.
The same drivers run on both client and server editions of the same Windows versions.

The computer hasn't yet crashed since I inadvertently "fixed" it.
This may change with restoration to a fresh state, which I plan to do.

I'm uncertain of the source of this particular motherboard - but HP does have manufacturing facilities that can make motherboards - or they could just as easily have had it outsourced and labeled as theirs.

The HP Support Assistant has to have a routine built in to determine the OS and it's version (in order to select the proper driver package to install). If they don't code the server OS's into it, then it's not going to work with a server OS.

Also, a large company like HP custom designs a lot of their drivers. If their coders don't code for server OS's, then those drivers won't work either. The workaround would be to download drivers from the device manufacturers and see if they support server OS's

If you're going to reset the system, make an image prior to that. That way if the accidental fix is the most stable, you'll be able to go back to it.

If updating the drivers, I'd start by reviewing the driver lists for this device on the HP website. Then go to the device manufacturer's website and use the HP info to find the proper driver for the server OS. I'd start with the Intel uitlities, as they are the biggest problem I see when they're outdated (http://downloadcenter.intel.com )

Work your way from the oldest drivers to the newest (this presumes that newer is more stable than older - and that newer drivers are more "refined" and "aware" than older drivers are.

In my list above, I believe that peerdistkm.sys is a Windows driver for this server OS. As such it'll only be updated through Windows Update. I don't list the rest of the OS drivers as they are usually not needed in BSOD analysis (for a fully updated system).
