Solved CPU-Z and HWMonitor will freeze Win8 on my machine...

Now THIS is strange. I cannot run either CPU-Z or HWMonitor (latest versions as of today) with my computer any more. CPU-Z will either stop the computer running during scanning my computer or will display the CPU running 317MHz THEN stop running! I turned off my o/c and no difference, seems to be Win8 CP. I have tried compatibility and running as Admin, no help. Reset is the only way out, mouse moves but no longer can click on anything.
Anyone else?

I dunno, you could check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers for any and all drivers that start with "cpuz"

If there is more than one, you can use Dameware NT Utilities to delete the CPU-Z services which load the driver(s), then reinstall CPU-Z after a reboot.

Check the CPU-Z driver modified date in its properties, if there is only one. Make sure it is 2012 or late 2011 version.

I have the exact same problem - CPU-z and HWMonitor freeze the machine: Just built a new machine; ASUS M/b P8P67-M, 8GB Corsair RAM, using Windows 8 Consumer Preview.
No other problems; Core temp and RealTemp work fine.
Did you find a fix? - I'm just about to try a different O/S on the machine.

THANK YOU Pete! I was not sure if it had something to do with just me!
No, I never did come up with a solution. The interesting thing is that we both have ASUS P8P67 (EVO in my case -heh, case get it?). One other program that will lock up the machine is AIDA64 (the old Everest program). All are reading the hardware and I am pretty sure that there are other issues with the SATA ports that causes intermittent lock ups when having heavy disk usage.
I also have my Sandy Bridge o/c to 4.4GHz and the memory to 1600 (its stated speed). I brought everything back to stock but that did NOT fix CPU-Z ( so don't bother).
I am fairly confident that this is purely a Win8 CP/ CPU-Z issue possibly mixed with an ASUS mobo. I never had any issues with CPU-Z with Win8 DP so problems are fairly recent.
I EXPECT this to be ironed out with the CPU-Z folks sooner rather than later and in the meantime, I can live with these programs not working. The only reason I run CPU-Z is for showing folks my o/c (I already know my CPU thanks). I use Prime-95 as a stability tester and Core temp to monitor CPU temps. I have a stable 4.5 GHz but temps are a little high so I run at 4.4GHz.
I will see if I can contact the CPU-Z folks....

I'd agree; Seems to be the combination of Windows 8 CP and the ASUS P8P67 mobo. I am now running Vista 32-bit on the same machine, no problems.

FYI, I also have a problem with 3DMark Vantage; again the system freezes just after clicking to start the benchmark, during the System Scanning. However, this seems to be known to Futuremark 3DMARK Vantage Win8 support

FYI, I have 2 other PCs running Windows 8 CP, both run CPU-Z, HWMonitor and 3DMark Vantage OK.

So it is an ASUS problem, good to know... I will contact ASUS... Meantime, I will fool with the BIOS as there are some hardware settings to look at.

I have the same problem as well. I'm using a Biostar TH67b. I ran it in windows 7 compatibility mode and it ran for about 2 minutes before freezing. It might just be luck that it happened to do so on the compatibility test. So I'm not sure if that's helpful or not.

Jimbo, Pete's and my mobos are Sandy Bridge machines so it seems to be an issue with the PROGRAM and not our machines. Of course, I had it ALL FIGURED OUT until YOU and TRU piped up, heh.
There is a way to leave a message on the CPUID site. I have already done so but you are welcome to add your complaint.

Meantime, I just skip these programs.
Someone post if a Win, BIOS, or program update fixes CPU-Z.

Hi John, I have exactly the same problem with you when I try to open CPU-Z or HWMonitor my pc just freezes thus leading to reset. To support your argument I can say it's totally not hardware related. I have MSI Z77 G45 CPUID products fail to start anyway.

Oh and 3D Mark 2011 freezes also. It installs just fine but when I try to run a benchmark it locks the pc up. Just like CPUID products...

Hi there
I only said it SEEMS to be CPU related -- just using evidence from my own testing.

Based on the evidence I had and I did state that the problem "Seems" to be hardware related I couldn't really fault my conclusion - afterall given the fact that a program works on the SAME OS on one system but not using the SAME OS on another --especially one like CPU-Z which is delving into all sorts of areas a normal application wouldn't touch- I think my conclusion was reasonable.

Of course if it's totally wrong then that's fine -- but one can't ignore the evidence of one's one eyes - and there's nothing wrong in suggesting a possible cause of error based on actual evidence.

Science is often conducted in this way -- gather empirical data and after formulating theories / hypotheses then they go back into the lab to prove or disprove.

If it turns out to be simple application errors -- so be it.

Cheers
jimbo

Jimbo, read "the Beginning of Infinity" by David Deutsch. He throws out every s i n g l e thing I thought I knew about science, knowledge, hell, even gravity. His take? Conflicting ideas are the occasion for all rational thought and inquiry. That leads to problems and problems are solvable. You predict an explanation, draw criticism, and come up with a good explanation that is hard to vary. Oh yeah, gravity does not exist, never has...
So our explanation is that CPUID does not work with Win8 CP on SOME machines. Anyone have criticisms?

Are any of you running motherboard utilities?

These can cause conflicts with several different apps/drivers.
If you have them, un-install all of them for testing, let us know if it helps.

Same here. No ASUS supplied mobo utilities, never used then anyways... Checked the CPUID web page, nothing. Checked their twitter feed, nothing. Sent them a message, no reply. Just a waiting game for them to rewrite their software..

YES !!! I do

Here is my screenshot of CPU-Z (64 bit version) WORKING on an INTEL powered I5 Sony VAIO laptop on W8 CP

So I stand by my original premise that IT DOES INDEED WORK on some hardware -- and my observation that it FREEZES on ASUS and ACER AMD powered computers is VALID in my experience.

Go Figure !!!! but it WORKS on THIS laptop

Cheers
