    Computer crashes/BSODs randomly

    Hi there,

I've got a small BSOD problem with my Win8.1 x64 installation. An hour ago my computer crashed while I wasnt near it (it only heard the restart peep). The last time it crashed I was able to note the error message, which stated:
    SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (nvlddmkm.sys)
After googeling a bit I found out, that the BSOD might be caused by bad drivers, so I enabled the Driver Verifier (following this instructions). I hope the crash dump mentioned in the driver verifier HowTo is included within the .zip. I've found another dump file under C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP but thats about 450MB, so I probably cant upload it here. So I copied the text with WinDbg x64 and put it here: Microsoft (R) Windows Debugger Version 6.3.9600.17029 AMD64 Copyright (c) Mic - Pastebin.com

After having a crash with the verifier active I dont know what to do now - that why I'm asking you for help If you need any further information, please ask!

    My system
    - Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97P-D3
    - CPU: Intel i5-4460
    - GPU: nVIDIA Geforce 8800 GT
    - 8GB RAM
    - Win 8.1 x64 (with all updates)

    Greetings,

You did not setup Wdbg correctly so the info in the link you gave above is no good. However, there's are 5 .dmp files in the zip files. 2 of them are caused by memory corruption, the other 3's are caused by the Video, Realtek, ntkrnlmp.exe.

    You can try:
    1. Download Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool , put it in a USB stick and rum Memtest for at least 6~8 hours unless errors occur earlier.
    2. If the memtest passes, turn off Driver verifier, Open the command prompt and run:
      chkdsk C: /r /f . May take a while to complete
    3. Again, from command prompt, run :
      - dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
      - sfc /scannow

    Good luck !!!

    Hi,

    thanks for your reply.

    1. I've already ran memtest which led to no errors (~14h and 11 to 12 tests), so I guess I'll skip this step.
    2. I will try this
    3. I've already tried this too (not only dism with /RestoreHealth but also /ScanHealth and another one I cant remember), which led to no errors too, but I will run it after checkdisk again.

Btw, what did you meant with the wrong windbg setup? Can you specify that or say how I set it up correctly?

All text in it just spelling out errors. You did have a Symbol Paths set up.
    1. Create a folder called Symbols then create 2 sub folders: private, web
    2. Add the following to your system enviroment variables:
      1. _NT_ALT_SYMBOL_PATH with value d:\symbols\private;srv*d:\symbols\web*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
      2. _NT_SYMBOL_PATH with the same value as above

NOTE: I created the folder in d: drive, so you need to change d: to where ever you create the folder

After running dism try sfc /scannow in an administrator cmd prompt.

So I've created the env variables and reopened the Windbg.

It now shows this: Microsoft (R) Windows Debugger Version 6.3.9600.17029 AMD64 Copyright (c) Mic - Pastebin.com - hope this contains less errors

Edit: @Bailey: Thanks, so I will start with chkdsk, dism and sfc - see you later (or via netbook).

Also need some help with BSOD. Started 2 weeks ago and I've been trying allot of different things, re installing new and old drivers, re installed windows. I will also try to blow my Laptop with a can of air in case I got some dust inside, but the CPU don't get as warm as it did before I re installed windows, because back then I thought it got overheated and caused BSOD some how. I'm no expert, that's why I am here so please help

    The BSOD I get atm.
    Driver Power State Failure
    Video TDR Failiure (nvlddmkm.sys)
Got 2 other kinds of BSOD before I re installed windows but don't remember them.

Also gained NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 340.52 stopped working While playing CS:GO but that was before I re installed windows.

I'm also loading my dump file up, used the program in the sticky thread.

    So,

    I'm back again

It tried, I really tried, to run chkdsk, but somehow it never went beyong 10% (for more then 2 hours). I somehow landed into some Windows backup/restore/repair options while trying to disable chkdsk on startup where I had a command prompt. Using this command prompt I ran chkdsk c: /f - it showed no errors (I left the /r option away because chkdsk didnt found any errors, so I assumed no restoration needed).

After that running dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth said, that it repaired some damage in the component storage (I dont know the exact words in english because I'm using Windows in german - but it said it repaired something and it was successfull).

sfc /scannow found no integrity injuries/violations.

Sometimes the chkdsk /r will hang when trying to locate bad sectors and recovers readable info.
Download CrystalDiskInfo.V6.2.0 . Run it to see if your HD has any bad sector.
