Hello.

I have a problem where whenever I connect to the internet using usb tethering with my phone(Asus Zenfone 5 LTE) my laptop will crash after a certain amount of time. Using other connection didn't cause the crash. This has been going on for almost week now and I really need to solved this problem immediately.

Here's the spec for my laptop:

ASUS X550D

AMD A10-5750M

8GB RAM

500GB Hard Drive

Windows 8.1 64-bit

I have also attached the SF Diagnostic Tool zip file.

Hopefully this problem can rectified as soon as possible.

Thanks.

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

You have a D-Link Wireless G DWA-110 USB Adapter and an ASUS Android USB Ethernet/RNDIS device
I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win8/8.1 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7 and later - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win8/8.1 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

Nearly all of the memory dumps in the WER section of MSINFO32 are involving USB devices (usb8023x.sys)
The same goes for the memory dump analysis' that I ran.
Please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates - as these drivers (the one's that are blamed) are Windows drivers. Windows drivers aren't often at fault, but it's best to have all updates in order to be sure.

Please remove the Western Digital software from your system. The wdcsam64.sys driver dates from 2008 and is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

npf.sys Fri Jun 25 12:50:58 2010 (4C24DE72)
NetGroup Packet Filter Driver (part of the WinPcap packet capture library)
npf.sys - this driver hasn't been added to the DRT as of this run. Please search Google/Bing for the driver if additional information is needed.

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

The drivers that are [DEL]struckout[/DEL] don't have updates available (AFAIK).
DO NOT delete them, just leave them be.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Thanks for your advise. I have updated all the drivers that you have mention except for npf.sys. I have installed all the available Windows Updates at this time as well. I have also uninstalled the Western Digital software as according to your advice. Currently everything is seem to be fine and I can connect to the internet just fine.

I will report again after a day or so whether it crashes again or not as the last time it crash was when it was left connected overnight.

Hi there, sorry if was late to reply but I have some bad news. It seems that my system crash again with the same BSOD message. I didn't saw the crash as it happened, the crash occurred in the middle of the night while I left the laptop downloading something. I have included the latest SF zip file.

Did you remove the Western Digital software?
Did you remove the AMD OverDrive?
Did you remove the Copy Protection platform developed by Tages SA?

If you did, then I'll provide instructions on how to manually remove the drivers associated with those programs.
It's more difficult and less reliable to remove them manually than it is to uninstall the programs.
If you didn't remove them, then please do so now.

If the BSOD's continue, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
This may make it easier to find the offending driver/program - if this is software and not a hardware problem.

Also, please let us know what USB devices you are using.

Sorry for the very late reply, college work has been piling up these past few days since midterm is around the corner.

Anyway, I did what you have ask; I uninstalled the Western Digital software and the Copy Protection platform. I was unable to uninstall AMD Overdrive since it is integrated into the graphics driver.

But the past few days I tried to switch the USB port in which the phone is connected from the USB 3.0 port to a USB 2.0 port. It seems it fixes the problem and the laptop did not crash at all even though it was left overnight.

From this observation I think something is wrong with the USB 3.0 drivers or the AICharger software since it is the only software that uses the 3.0 ports. Since you have asked, I have four USB devices connected excluding the phone.

Here is the list of devices:
An external hard drive(USB 3.0)
A USB hub(USB 2.0)
A mouse and keyboard (both 2.0)

My laptop has three USB ports, two 3.0 and one 2.0.
The usb mouse and keyboard is connected to the usb hub which is connect to the single 2.0 port.
The external hard drive is connect to one of the 3.0 ports
The phone was previously connected to the other 3.0 port before I change it to the 2.0 port on the usb hub.

Leave the AMD Overdrive for now. We may have to come back to it later.

In the past we had a lot of BSOD issues with the AICharger type software. The solution back then was to uninstall the AICharger program from the computer.

The latest version of this driver (from this page: Notebooks & Ultrabooks - X550DP - ASUS ) dates from 27 March 2014. It's in the Utilities section and is labelled the Asus USB Charger Plus
Please:
- download a fresh copy of the latest, Win8.1 compatible version of the Asus USB Charger Plus software
- uninstall the Asus USB Charger program from your system
- install the freshly downloaded Asus USB Charger Plus program.
- monitor for further BSOD's

Also install the latest ATKACPI driver and hotkey-related utilities (in the ATK section).

Finally, should the BSOD's continue, try it with fewer things plugged into the USB ports (temporarily). This'll tell you if it's a power draw problem or not.

Good luck!

Alright after a few days after installing the new AICharger driver it seems that it fixes the BSOD. No crashing for the past few days. I think it is safe to mark this thread as solved.

Thanks for your help and have a nice day!
