Solved BSOD - Windows 8.1 ffffe0011caf8028; DMLOGZIP included

Hi,

We have a computer we're running Windows 8.1 Pro, which keeps crashing - typically overnight, and typically when we're running large computational simulations.

I have been working on parsing the WinDBG outputs, and finally got to:
Probably caused by : GenuineIntel

But before that, I see:
BugCheck 124, {0, ffffe0011caf8028, be000000, 100110a}
***** Kernel symbols are WRONG. Please fix symbols to do analysis.
*************************************************************************
*** Either you specified an unqualified symbol, or your debugger...

But I am not 100% sure what I'm looking at. In WinDBG I am pretty sure I've succesfully pointed the symbol path to download symbols correctly from msdn.

So we ran "dm log collector", the ZIP is attached.

Let me know if any other information would be informative or I'm missing something obvious...

-Pete

p.s. We do have a large RAID drive attached via USB3; connecting that seemed to correlate to the start of these crashes, but that might be wishful correlation seeking.

Here's a link to some info about STOP 0x124 errors: BSOD Index
Basically , this is an error that the CPU reports to Windows. This does not mean that it's a hardware error - but it most frequently is hardware related (hardware, compatibility, low-level drivers).

Please start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

Only 56 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 70 to 90 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Don't worry about the specific number, it's just important that you have checked and installed any updates that were available (and didn't experience any errors).

You have at least 3 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?
The program named MATLAB may be involved (it's the process named in all but 1 of the memory dumps - but this is not generally significant for BSOD troubleshooting). I just mention this so that we'll remember it while doing our troubleshooting, I have no firm evidence of it causing problems. For example, it may not be compatible with the drivers for your RAID USB device (just an example).

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

The drivers that are [DEL]struckout[/DEL] don't have updates available (AFAIK).
DO NOT delete them, just leave them be.

Although this is symptomatic of hardware issues, we can't dismiss the possibility of software/driver problems.
Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
You may want to add/remove the RAID USB device while running Driver Verifier to see if you can cause a BSOD due to it.

Hi!

Thank you for the information! We have 4 windows updates pending, and will install those post-haste.

Our power supply is relatively new (the whole computer is a Dell, dating from around Oct 2013). We have a standard HDD drive, and a low-power SSD in the computer box; the other (huge, 3rd) drive has its own external power supply, though.

That external (3rd) drive is connected to a PCI-E SATA board, which may or may not have a Windows 8.1 compatible driver; that is currently our prime suspect. We currently have it routed through USB3 (vs. the SATA card, which we removed) and are trying to reproduce.

After the windows updates, we'll run driver-verifier and hardware diagnostics.

Thanks again!

-Pete

Quick update - appears to have been a display-driver issue; we started updating drivers one-by-one and once we updated a GEForce driver, things appear to have stabilized.

Thanks for your help.
