    Graphics freezes & Memory failure

    1. When I set the view in Control Panel to small or large icons, it shows the change, but after closing/reopening CP the icon view is not retained. It consistently returns to default setting.

    2. When I copy a file to desktop from the storage partition on the main hard drive, or from a USB external storage such as flash drive or external hard drive, a window opens showing the progress of the copy. However, when it reaches 99% it freezes the progress window, and the recipient folder into which the file is being copied.

The only way around is to log off/on. When this is done, the copy has actually been completed and is seen in the recipient folder.

Is there a way to report these problem to Microsoft?

I doubt it because it is a local problem with your setup. Did it always do this, or did it just start? Does it do the same thing in safe mode (F8)?

Update since making the original post: Both problems have been there from the get go.

    1. I was setting the view of Control Panel in a desktop icon that I had created by using the option: Send to desktop as shortcut. I replaced this icon by right clicking on desktop --> Personalize --> Change desktop icons --> Tick: Control Panel. When I changed the view using this new icon the view stayed changed.

I don't understand why it wouldn't work on the first icon, because it should have. It does in Win7. The problem is fixed to the extent I've got it working, but it does suggest a glitch in the beta version of Win8.

    2. Re the desktop freezing when copying data, I just discovered that if I wait approximately 45 seconds after it gets to 99% it finally finishes. And that's true of all files/folders regardless of size. May possibly be a graphics card issue. I'm using Gigabyte GTX 550 Ti on an extreme Intel DX58SO2 mobo and i7-969CPU & 12GB DDR3 1300 RAM. And periodically the graphics card stops working, then rights itself about 10 - 15 seconds later.

However, I don't have these problems on the same PC running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. The only difference is Win7 is running on a Corsair Performance SSD SATA3 128GB hard drive. I'm running Win8 32bit on a normal SATA2 250GB hard drive from the external SATA caddy inbuilt into my tower.

The thread could be considered solved in the sense that the view is fixed, and the copy issue eventually works, but I wouldn't call it a normal scenario.

On issue #2 (file copy hangs for ~30 seconds) i had the same problem on Windows 8 CP and found a solution here:

copy a tiny file take long time - Microsoft Answers

Just enable (show) the Navigation Pane in explorer - restart explorer - no more hang! At least not on my system. Your mileage may vary.

I was so happy to get this solved - it's been driving me NUTS since 1st day of CP's release. Hope the above fix works for you.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the input samurai12. Unfortunately it did not work on my system. The navigation pane was already switched on in Windows Explorer. So to cover all bases I tried it with the NP switched off. Made no difference. In fact, when I switch the navigation pane off and shut/reopen WinExp folder, it is switched back on again. Just like Control Panel, except there is no option to tick to show CP on desktop. It has to be sent as a shortcut.

Update: Once again, I deleted the Windows Explorer shortcut I had sent to desktop, and pinned it to the task bar via metro, turned on the navigation panel, and hey presto it worked.

Good to have it fixed, but still doesn't explain why shortcuts sent to desktop don't work. Both these problems were associated with graphics and shortcuts sent to desktop. How can they be reported to Microsoft, assuming MS can't be expected to read every thread on the forum.

Bear, did you install the latest chipset/storage/USB 3.0 drivers for your motherboard from Intel.com?

    Any 3rd party antivirus installed?

Yes, Intel Renesas USB3 control drivers are up to date; as are all other Intel mobo drivers, such as chipset, rapid storage, etc.

And yes, I have Avast anti-virus loaded on Win8. Should the AV make a difference? Tried to install Zone Alarm but while it did install it would not open. Deleted it, including all reg entries using Revo Uninstaller.

Thanks Gman have uninstalled Avast using Revo Uninstaller which also cleans registry and any left over files. Also ran Glary Utilities to clean registry. And finally manually did regedit search; and manual search of program files, common files, AppData, Program Data, etc. And that should have solved the general freezing problem.

However, after doing all this, Windows Explorer still needs Navigation Pane showing in order to copy stuff at normal speed from my 2nd storage partition on main HD, or from external USB HD. This creates a problem, because having Navigation Pane on in WinExp means it's also turned on in all other folders.

In both my PCs with Win7 and Vista I have the following universal view settings:

    • Navigation Pane unticked.
    • List view.
    • All Column items unticked.
    • Sort by set to None.

This means all I see are the folder/files names in alphabetical order. However, in Win8 as it stands, I'm forced to have NavPane turned on in all folders.

I think I'll wait a few months until Microsoft have sorted some of the fine tuning before doing anymore with Win8. I certainly don't want to have to do hacks and work arounds in the final version.

Thanks everyone for your help. Poppa Bear
