Search will not START

    RESOLVED: Search will not START

As no fix for the problem described below could be found, a repair install was done - and succeeded.

The search service will not start, via SERVICES.MSC. Generates 1053 error or access denied, error 5.

Ran the search fix tool. It checked permissions, and reported the problem was fixed, but still no go.
Attempts to re-run it simply say "not started."

Under INDEX OPTIONS there is no location listed. "Search not running."

Merged the WSEARCH_1053-fix.reg file suggested by an MS MVP.

In Programs and Features, search was disabled (reboot), then enabled (reboot).

    Still won't start. Tips?

You could try this, which fixes the audio service not running. Perhaps it will do the same for that, especially if you upgraded to Windows 8:
