    BSOD: BAD_POOL_CALLER and DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    Hello,
I have a new desktop PC from HP that gets BSOD with BAD_POOL_CALLER and DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL messages. I have tried debug with HP and ended up requesting a return. The replacement PC displays the same behavior. Here is what I have been able to determine:

    1) Crashes happen only when listening to music through a Plantronics USB headset plugged into one of the USB 3.0 ports.
    2) No crashes when listening to music through the PC speakers or when the headset is plugged into one of the USB 2.0 ports.
    3) When using Windows Media Player, crashes seem to occur only when listening to music files that reside on my NAS drive. No crash when I tried copying an album to my desktop and played that in WMP.
    4) When using iTunes, crashes occur when listening to music files that reside either on my NAS drive or on the desktop.
    5) I haven't figured out a pattern for which error message is given (BAD_POOL_CALLER and DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL). The latter message has variously been given along with the following file names: WFD01000.SYS, USBXHCI.SYS.

I have attached the dump info file.
    Help is much appreciated!

This event is related to your Plantronics Audio Device according to the DxDiag Report.
This event is present almost everytime there is a BSOD. Do you get any BSOD if you do not insert the USB Audio?

One thing which you could try is that by going to "Device Manager" ---> "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" ---> "Uninstall the USB 3.0 by right clicking and clicking on Uninstall".

Let me know how it goes ^_^.

    Hi, Blueelvis-
Thanks so much for your help on this! I have tried uninstalling the USB 3.0 controllers in Device Manager - this didn't seem to change anything. I called Plantronics tech support, and they didn't have anything in their knowledge base for USB 3.0 incompatibilities with this headset. How would I check for an update to the Plantronics headset? Would I go into Device Manager with the headset plugged in and try to update the driver for the headset?

To answer your question, I haven't observed a BSOD without this headset plugged into one of the USB 3.0 ports.

Perhaps I should buy a new USB headset to see if the problem persists.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Eac ^_^,

Before buying a new headset, I would suggest you to update your Audio & Chipset drivers. The drivers could be found at the below link for your model :-
Software & driver downloads HP ENVY 700-300z CTO Desktop PC | HPо Support

Let me know how this one goes ^_^

By the way, in your previous post, you mean USB 2.0 port right?

    Hi, Blueelvis-
Thanks for the link. I updated the audio and chipset drivers as well as the BIOS, but I still get the BSOD. Plantronics does not provide a driver for this headset. Instead, they rely on the driver provided by Windows. I have tried to update that in Device Manager, but Windows reports that there isn't an update for it.

I tried a Logitech USB headset in the USB 3.0 port and didn't get a BSOD. So discarding the Plantronics headset and using the Logitech one is at least a work-around for this issue. Since I am currently within the return period for the new PC, I would like to make sure that there isn't a hardware problem.

Regarding the previous post, I meant USB 3.0 (No BSOD without the headset plugged into a UBS 3.0 port. Put another way, I only get BSOD with the headset plugged into 3.0, no BSOD when plugged into 2.0).

    Thanks again!

    Hi Eac ^_^,

I wonder if it is a problem with your Hardware of the PC as the Logitech Headset is working in the 3.0 port. You could call Plantronics and see if you could get in touch with the technical team.

In the mean time, I would ask around to make sure once. Hold on tight!

    Hi, Blueelvis-
I have called Planronics tech support twice. They didn't have any info about this and were no help. Same with HP tech support. I am on my own to debug this, which is why I posted it on this site. Can you (or anyone else in the forum) help me to determine if there is a hardware problem? I don't want to ignore it beyond the time period in which I can return the PC, only to have it resurface in the future.

Since I have already done one return with HP, I have seen the same issue with two different (but identical) PCs. This suggests that it is some kind of incompatibility rather than a hardware defect, but I would like to be more sure.
    Thanks again!

    Hi Eac ^_^,

Just got a reply from my friend :-
I have a Plantronics headset, I’ve never used it in the 3.0 slots, nor is there any need.
It seems to be either an issue with the USB 3.0 Extensible driver and the Plantronics gamecom driver.

The issue seems to be that DPCs related to USB 3.0 driver routines aren’t being completed properly, I suspect a bug in the code which was deferred.

A Kernel dump may or may not provide more insight.
So, I really wonder if you really would like to troubleshoot this. If you would really like it then I would need a Kernel or Complete Memory Dump file. It is located at :- "C:\Windows\Memory.DMP" .
It may be a big file so please make sure that you ZIP it up before uploading it.
