Solved BSOD DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE when unpluging laptop

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 5748 laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. Soon after setting up my computer I got a blue screen of death that said DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. This happened three times already. I noticed this occures a few minutes after I unplug the power. Also the trackpad stops working a minute or two before I get the BSOD. I checked the system history via the My Dell program and it says that the BSOD was caused by the "PCI Express Root Complex" driver. I don't know how to fix the problem. I already updated all my drivers. I added the SF diagnostic tool zip to the attachments. Any help would be much appreciated.

Please follow the below steps :-

  1. Please goto this **LINK** and then download all the latest drivers for your model. Please make sure you download the Chipset drivers and the Network Drivers.
  2. Please remove the Daemon Tools Software as well till the time we are troubleshooting.
  3. Please update the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers as well from the above link.
  4. If the above does not work then please follow this **GUIDE** for Driver Verifier and make sure that you let it crash for a few times and then upload a freshly generated SF Diagnostic ZIP File.

Let me know how it goes ^_^

Still checking

I have done the first three steps that you have listed. I am currently using Driver Verifier to cause a BSOD and after running for almost a day my laptop still hasn't crashed. Do you think I should have included the pci.sys driver when I was selecting the drivers to verify (the tutorial says that I should uncheck all the Microsoft drivers)?

Hi Muzgar15 ^_^,

Yea, check that one as well for this time and let me know if it crashes or not. You must run Driver Verifier for atleast 36 hours continuously before turning it off if it still does not give a BSOD.

If you are still getting a BSOD on turning off the Driver Verifier, I would request a freshly generated SF Diagnostic ZIP File to analyze.

Let me know how it goes ^_^.

OK, will try that and post the results. Just FYI, the laptop is going back to the store for repairs, because it is still under warranty. Will post what their response is and if the error is fixable or if it is a hardware problem.

Sure thing. Let me know how it goes ^_^But I would say that the bugcheck Driver_Power_State_Failure is generally caused by software and not by hardware :)

Irp Extension present at 0xffffcf81d422efb0:
As you can see the "nvlddmkm.sys" driver has been blamed which is the NVIDIA Graphics Driver. On further checking the timestamp of the driver -

Your version is not the one provided by the Dell. Dell's website has a NVIDIA Driver of June. Please note that on laptops it is strongly suggested to use only the drivers provided by the OEM as they tweak the drivers to work for the Switching purposes.

Please run this **TOOL** and then uninstall the NVIDIA Drivers completely. Once it is uninstalled, restart your system. After this, download the NVIDIA Driver for your laptop model from this **LINK**. Install this one and then restart.

Let me know how it goes ^_^

Reinstalled the driver and I think that did the job. So far I haven't been able to replicate the BSOD. I hope this works... Thank you so much for your help :) If anything happens I'll be sure to let you know.
