BSOD on sleep wake and browsing web:DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION

Hello. After a few weeks of fruitlessly searching through similar threads for a permanent fix to my recurring BSOD problem, I decided I'd have to investigate deeper into my particular problem, hopefully with the help of the nice people here at eightforums.

Ever since the beginning of July I've been experiencing regular freezes on my Asus N750JV, running Windows 8.1 Update 1. Sometimes they would result in a BSOD with the string DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION and code 0x00000133, other times I would have to do a hard restart. While seemingly random at first, as they continued occurring, I noticed a few things about the pattern of the freezes/BSODs. They would occur either:
    - when browsing the web using Firefox 31.0 or
    - when waking the computer after a prolonged sleep time (2+ hours)

Regarding the latter situation, the crash could take place at any time during the wake up process, in so far as I've had it happen after logging in, on the login screen or even before the monitor had fully woken up. I'm not sure if this a relevant clue, but I'll mention that in 99% of these cases Firefox was running in the active user session.

After reading some other forums, I was given to understand that this could also be an issue with my SSD not behaving as it should during sleep and wake up, which prompted me to install the newest Intel RAID driver. This seemed to solve the problem for about a week, but it has since returned full-force...

I am currently at a complete loss as to how to solve this issue and would greatly appreciate any thoughts on the matter. I've also attached the required information and dump files.

EDIT: Forgot to add that this is a dual boot machine, with both Windows 8.1 and Linux Mint 16 installed on separate SSD partitions. Hopefully the source of the problem is not the Linux partition, as I quite value it for its usefulness in university coursework....

Hi Phophorus & Welcome to the forums ^_^,

I have analyzed your dump files and below has been provided an analysis of the same for informative purposes :-

Please follow the below steps, one step at a time :-

    1. Please remove any ASUS Bloatware present on the system. Make sure that the system files for ASUS are also not present on the system. Once this is done, check ASUS support page for your model and see if there is any update for the ATK Utility. If yes, then please update to the latest version of it. If not, then please check the optional updates of Windows Update and see if it is there or not.
    2. Please remove Hamachi LogMeIn as it is known to cause issues with some systems.
    3. Please remove Avast Antivirus using this **TOOL**.

If the crashes still don't stop then please run Driver Verifier according to this **GUIDE** and let it crash for a few times. Once it crashes for few times, generate a fresh SF Diagnostic ZIP file and upload it with your Next Post.

Let me know how it goes ^_^.

    Windows 8.1 Update 1

Hi blueelvis and thank you for taking the time to analyse my crash dumps.

Regarding the steps you instructed me to take, I have done my best to remove all unnecessary ASUS features, but I did leave in SmartGesture, InstantKey and USB Charger Plus, as I figured these enable functionalities I make use of frequently (touchpad gestures, quick program launch and sleep USB charging). Do these also fall under the category of bloatware?
As for the ATK package, I have successfully updated it to the newest version downloaded from the ASUS website.

When it came to uninstalling Hamachi, however, I hesitated since as far as I could remember, it was installed for the first time on this machine a week or two after the blue screens started showing. A quick check did indeed reveal it was installed on 26/07/2014, whereas my earliest crash dump dates back to 21/07/2014, which is roughly the time I enabled minidumps. A few crashes had happened previous to that as well. Can Hamachi really be the culprit in this case? I realise I'm starting to sound like someone who just doesn't want to give up their precious little programs, but I'm honestly just trying to get to the bottom of this by eliminating possible suspects...

Avast I did uninstall, however, and replaced with AVG.

Now, for a couple of days the blue screens seemed to have subsided, but this morning I got another one, so I decided I'd run driver verifier on all third-party drivers, including the ones you listed. That caused two more crashes, whose minidumps I'm attaching here in the hopes that they'll prove more informative.

Lastly, a couple of quick question. How can the call stack be empty if at the time of the crashes the computer is actively running programs and services? Were its contents simply not recorded in the dump files or was it cleared during the crashes?

    Thanks again for your help!

Now, regarding to your questions, I would try to explain my best ^_^.

Yes, regarding the ASUS programs you have left, they are considered as the ASUS Bloatware. Bloatware is anything which comes preinstalled over a system and is installed by the manufacturer but should be absent in a vanilla version of the operating system. The AiCharger.sys is very notorious for causing BSOD's. I have seen many cases which are resolved by removing the ASUS Bloatware.

Do you see the highlighted part (NDIS) in my analysis? It is the Networking related driver of Windows which handles the Network Translation, Discovery and all that. Since, it is a Windows component, chance of it being at fault is extremely low. So, please check if you get BSOD's or not if the system is disconnected from the Network (Internet).

Hence, I suggest you strongly to remove Hamachi and AVG (Do not install any AV till we are troubleshooting) using this **TOOL**.

A call stack can be empty for many reasons like it is corrupt (Some driver corrupted it), or there was some problem in writing the dump files and so on.

I hope this clears your doubt ^_^.

Let me know how it goes.

    Windows 8.1 Update 1

Thanks once again for looking into the issue and answering my questions. No worries about any delays. I know the people here have busy schedules and am quite patient.

I followed your instructions closely this time and removed Hamachi, AVG and all ASUS programs. Truth is the bloatware wasn't even pre-installed on the machine, as FreeDOS was all it had when I bought it. I guess the ASUS driver CD coaxed me into installing them.... Well, regardless, they're gone now.

Now as for the NDIS driver you mentioned, after a couple of days of intense forum-reading, I was actually hoping a link between the BSODs and networking matters might surface. One other symptom I didn't think was worth mentioning up until now is that the freezes and crashes tended to occur simultaneously with my Wi-Fi indicator changing from "Connected" to "Limited". Connection drops have been a pretty common occurrence (at least 4-5 times a day) over the last couple of months, but I assumed that was because the router at home was a bit shoddy. Also, usually only 1 out of those 5 disconnects coincided with a BSOD. Most of the times they were resolved by manually disconnecting and reconnecting to the network.

Yesterday, though, something quite eye-opening happened. While watching a video, my connection went to "Limited", the computer froze and the audio stuttered just as it would when about to crash, but after a second or so everything was back to normal. It was then that I discovered various forum posters with wireless adapter cards of the same model as mine, reporting frequent connection drops and even hangs or crashes. However, there seemed to be no universal solution to the problem.

I feel a bit frustrated now, having singled out a likely culprit but left with no means to fix the issue, but I'd still be open to opinions. I shall report back to this thread with a fresh .zip if and when new crashes occur.

    Hi Phosphorous,

Thanks for replying back with what you found out. So, is your BSOD problem resolved? Did you encounter any further BSOD's?

Regarding the drop in Network Connectivity what you can do is uninstall the Wireless Adapter from the Device Manager and then restarting the system (Do not update it). Now, once it is done check if the drop is still happening or not. I have seen that this generally does the job in most of the cases.

In case you want detailed instructions (I am at college atm :P ), I would be happy to post them when I reach dorm.

Let me know how it goes ^_^.

    Windows 8.1 Update 1

Hi, it's been a few days since my last post and I'm happy to say that after repeatedly uninstalling my Wi-Fi card driver - since Windows insisted on reinstalling it the moment I refreshed the device list - my problem seems to have been solved.

I have had no random disconnections over the past three days and absolutely no blue screens. The driver version that I eventually let Windows keep predates even the release of Windows 8, so it's quite baffling how it would work better than a version supposedly engineered to be compatible with this OS.... I guess I will just take care to avoid this particular card manufacturer in the future.

I can't express how thankful I am for all the help you've offered me, blueelvis. Your analyses and advice were quite invaluable!

Thanks again and I'll mark this as solved!
