Solved (maybe?) Memory-related BSODs and app crashes for years

Hello everybody,

Frustrated Windows 8 user and busy college student here. Small background on this longstanding current problem: a couple years back I had to replace most of the main components in my HP desktop due to a motherboard defect that essentially destroyed the motherboard’s ability to read from my hard drive. My computer at the time was running Windows 7, and it was around the time Windows 8 had just become available as a beta. As I had to replace the motherboard, and therefore the processor and RAM with up-to-date parts, the original Windows 7 key that came with the computer could no longer be used, so I decided to just run the beta until Windows 8 came out, at which I would just purchase it and run that, since buying Windows 8 was going to be much cheaper than buying Windows 7.

Windows 8 beta worked smoothly on this system without a hitch that fall of 2012. When the beta ended, I purchased Windows 8 and that worked without a hitch too until the beginning of 2013. Sporadically my computer would crash, but I dismissed it as nothing major as computers sometimes just crash… right? But the crashing became way more frequent after a few months, to the point where I almost always expected the computer to crash at least once within the hour. At that point I thought perhaps I should attempt to replace any other leftover old parts in the computer. I purchased a new hard drive, thinking something corrupt there could have been the problem, but that didn’t solve it. I’ve tried searching online for solutions to the issue on and off for a very long time (uninstalling particular updates, updating particular hardware drivers) but nothing seemed to work, and I was far too busy with school to spend my days troubleshooting.
So I decided to carry my desktop computer to the local computer repair shops near my school in the hopes that I could pay someone to help me salvage my investment in this old computer, when I probably should have used the money on a new computer to have avoided all of this headache. The shops held onto my computers for about two weeks each, trying fresh installs, trying replacing different components of my computer, like the power supply, the hard drive, the cables involved in the motherboard connections, etc. but they couldn’t figure it out either. (thankfully, they didn’t charge me for the work) I also tried taking out different combinations of the RAM sticks, only using 1 of them, 2 of them, 3 of them, etc – no dice.

Fast forward to now, I’ve been putting up with this computer crashing, and all my programs crashing but it’s severely detracting from my ability to do schoolwork efficiently (and I really need it in particular these next few months). I would much rather just buy a new computer, but I simply don’t have the money right now, so I’m reaching out to the Internet for someone to help me get to the bottom of this. Why does my computer keep giving me BSODs and can I fix this at all?

TLDR: BSODs and app crashes for years, no computer repair shop has had success fixing – Windows 8 used to work fine a few years back, but in recent 2 years keeps crashing – why?

Main symptoms of problem:
- BSOD errors I get most frequently are: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT and PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
(sometimes also get SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and REFERENCE_BY_POINTER and VIDEO_MEMORY_MANAGEMENT_INTERNAL)

- Chrome tabs and extensions crash VERY frequently – probably on the order of every 5 mins something crashes. (error is like “He’s dead Jim --- perhaps Chrome ran out of memory, please reload, etc” or “extension X has crashed” or the whole browser just crashes)

- other apps I run crash, like Spotify or utorrent

- I think some of the services in charge of managing USB inputs crash too because sometimes my mouse and keyboard hang until the computer recognizes the connection again, or my wireless internet adapter loses signal because it gets disabled.

Please help me :( This is the only computer problem I’ve ever encountered that I’ve been at an absolute loss for.

Let me know if any other details are needed, or if there are any questions, or if I should try replacing any parts. (I was kind of considering RMA-ing the RAM, but I have to use this computer daily, so I would need something in its place if I did)

EDIT: wanted to add that this computer has been through very many clean re-installs on Windows 8. on the most recent, there were some errors installing Windows 8 off of the official CD initially, but after multiple attempts it was eventually successful. At some point I tried installing just Windows 7 on the system instead but it still continued to crash with similar errors.

We can see that most of them are the Memory Management BSOD's. Below is a list of 3rd party drivers present on your system :-

Please follow the below steps :-

  1. Please disable the Agere SoftModem in your BIOS or if you could find the updated version for that, then please download and install that update.
  2. Update the rest of the Highlighted drivers.
  3. Please check ASUS Support and see if there is any ATK Utility Update for your model. If there is no update at ASUS Website then please check the Optional Updates in the Windows Update. There might be an ASACPI.sys update waiting for you to download as it is known to cause BSOD's in many cases.
  4. Your BIOS seems to be dated in 2012, please check your manufacturer if there is any BIOS Update available. Please do note that updating BIOS is a very unforgiving process as even a slight mistake will brick your device making it unusable.
  5. Please run Memtest according to this **GUIDE**.

Let me know how it goes ^_^.

1. Please disable the Agere SoftModem in your BIOS or if you could find the updated version for that, then please download and install that update.
couldn’t figure out how to disable through BIOS so I just found the modem in Device Manager and disabled it. Is that okay?
2. Update the rest of the Highlighted drivers.
dc3d.sys – I tried to download the newest version of this through the newest version of Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center, but it says I already have the newest version, so I didn’t update it
GEARAspiWDM.sys – I downloaded the newest version of GEAR software through their site
RTL8192su.sys – The Realtek site doesn’t have a newer version of this driver
atikmpag.sys and atikmdag.sys – updated via ATI site
au630x64.sys – updated from Realtek site

3. Please check ASUS Support and see if there is any ATK Utility Update for your model. If there is no update at ASUS Website then please check the Optional Updates in the Windows Update. There might be an ASACPI.sys update waiting for you to download as it is known to cause BSOD's in many cases.
couldn’t find update on ASUS or through Windows Update, so I just downloaded the newest version I could find online and installed it

4. Your BIOS seems to be dated in 2012, please check your manufacturer if there is any BIOS Update available. Please do note that updating BIOS is a very unforgiving process as even a slight mistake will brick your device making it unusable.
sucessfully updated BIOS to the newest version

5. Please run Memtest according to this **GUIDE**.
My impression is that Memtest is something that takes really long to run, so I'll probably run it overnight tonight and update with the results. I'll see how the system runs with these new updated drivers in the meanwhile too.

Thank you :)

Running the computer with the new drivers yesterday, the system still continued to show the same BSODs. Ran memtest with all 4 sticks of RAM in and instantly found tons of errors. Began running each stick of RAM individually and so far one stick yields a bunch of errors immediately, the other 2 yield no errors for 1 pass each, and the 4th stick is still running but it doesn't look like any errors are coming up. Could this mean just the first stick of RAM was faulty?

I wonder why no shop checked the RAM? :p

Also, make sure you check the slots of the motherboard as well because those can be defective as well (By testing good RAM in each slot).

Let me know how it goes ^_^.

Feeling a little silly here because the solution was actually pretty simple. So far the computer's been going strong with 2/4 good sticks in the system for 10 hours with no crashing! I have a few questions though:

1) What caused this one stick of RAM to go bad? (seeing as there was a point in time where it worked properly)
2) Can I RMA it to Corsair because of it's memtest results?
3) I've heard from some people not to use "incomplete sets" of RAM. Like because these particular sticks were bought in a set of 4, I should either use the whole set, or just 2 of them. I've also heard that for a similar reason I can't simply just replace the bad RAM stick -- its replacement won't "get along" with all the sticks from a different set. If I wanted to RMA the one faulty stick, would I have to RMA all of them?

Hi Lauracomp ^_^,

Don't feel silly for this. You just saved I would say at least 50$ (Atleast that is what a repairman takes for fixing the PC plus parts are extra ;)).

Now, related to your questions, those have been answered below :-

  1. RAM's generally go BAD because the electric components (transistors, diodes and all) wear out and die. This can just happen randomly (My RAM inside desktop worked for 2 years and then suddenly dead :( ). You could also add to the causes as the DUST, no proper ventilation or someone handled the RAM while they were statically charged enough? Lots of causes to list.
  2. Yes, you can RMA the stick to Corsair IF it is still in warranty based on the Memtest Results. I don't think you would need to explain the Receptionist about the Memtest :p.
  3. I haven't seen a single case of RAM Incompatibility since my stay on these forums (May 2014) but I have heard it from my friends. My desktop runs with 3 Hynix 1GB modules and one 2GB Kingston module, so it is not that the RAM won't work. AFAIK People advise to buy sets of RAM because it can then run in Dual Channel or Quad Channel or like that so that you would get a performance boost. Since the sets of RAM have same timings, they work very well. Hence, the new RAM should have the same CLOCK TIMINGS to work in channels. For example, my current Toshiba Laptop's RAM is working in Dual Channel even though one is Samsung and the other one is Corsair with slightly different timings. So, in the end you would only need to RMA the bad sticks.

Is only one stick bad or two sticks bad?

Let me know how it goes ^_^.

Gotcha! Just one stick was bad. Doing the RMA process through Corsair I discovered that they require you to return the whole set anyway even when just one stick is defective. I guess they're just a bit more conservative when it comes to fears about incompatibility between replacements. But thank you so much for your help! I couldn't have figured it out without your guidance. :p Left the computer on overnight with an online stopwatch to see if it would crash in the interim, and it's been without BSODs for the past 20 hours, so I can safely say the problem's solved!

Well that is good news for you :p . I hear nice things about Corsair from my friends as well ;)

Thank you for your kind words and I am glad to hear that the issue has been resolved ^_^. In case of any further problems, do not hesitate to post back ^_^.
