Frequent BSODs on Win8.1 laptop, different error codes

Okay, I was able to run two of the diagnostic tests.

    1) As we agreed, I skipped the memory diagnostics.

    2) Under AntiMalware tests, I ran the free BitDefender scan, which found zero viruses.

    3) Under Hard Drive Diagnostics, I couldn’t find any Western Digital-offered diagnostics for my WD HDDs; trying to find software for my specific drives by searching for their model numbers on the WD website did nothing.

Instead, I downloaded and ran HD Tune (free) and ran the Benchmark and Error Scan tests; the latter came back clean. Results (screenshots) are attached to this post. (Hidden items under “Health” tab are also “Ok”. Also, I only scanned the main drive with boot and system partitions as the second drive is band-new and was installed in the machine just yesterday.)

I've suspected problems with RainMeter but haven't seen any evidence - so I just watch it.

Try both of the 8.1 (Clean Install) bluetooth drivers (Atheros and Intel) - I can't figure out which one is actually in the system.
It won't hurt to install both (and one may tell you that it can't find the hardware - so that will end that mystery). Unfortunately I tend to find that Toshiba installers aren't that informative - and at times they'll just quit and won't tell you anything (and deeper digging reveals that they didn't install anything).

Please run the Seatools diagnostics on both hard drives. If unable to use bootable media, then run the Windows versions of the test (or you can try the Windows version of the Western Digital diagnostics).

Have you removed the VPN and TAP stuff from the Toshiba?
Has the Toshiba experienced any BSOD's since you removed the VPN and TAP stuff?

I checked and the only Bluetooth device listed in Device Manager that doesn’t come with Windows is the “Atheros Bluetooth Filter Driver”, v8.0.1.300, the same listed on the “Clean Installation” page. Running the “Intel Bluetooth Filter Driver” installer does nothing. It would indeed be nice if the installer would at least let you know when/why it doesn’t install.

As mentioned, I was unable to find any Western Digital-specific diagnostic software either by following the links here or by searching for my hard drive model on the WD website. (I.e. searching with “Find by Model Number” produces no actual results, like the search box is broken.)

I downloaded the SeaTools program and will run it later, then will post back with results.

Yes, the VPN software and TAP driver are gone. The Toshiba hasn’t crashed in a couple days now, in fact, but it’s gone that long between crashes before, this doesn’t mean anything yet.

Update: I installed SeaTools for Windows (not the bootable version) since I can already boot into Windows.

The following tests were run and passed by both HDDs:

    • Fix All (Fast)
    • S.M.A.R.T. Check
    • Short Drive Self Test
    • Short Generic

I avoided the long tests as I assumed the short versions would be sufficient. Let me know if you’d like me to run the longer tests and/or others. (I couldn’t open the Advanced Tests menu.)

Quick update: Since the Toshiba’s been inactive today, I set Driver Verifier to run with these settings several hours ago. Still no crashes as of yet. Will leave it on overnight unless something happens first.

Please run the long tests with Seagate - the short tests only spot check the drives.

    John,

Would it be possible that a system does not crash while using Driver Verifier but crashes during normal startup?

I’d forgotten Driver Verifier was still running, so I woke up to a BSOD that interrupted the tests. Restarting the tests. At least this time the BSOD left a minidump, attached to this post.

All right, I have completed SeaTools tests “Fix All (long)” and “Long Generic” on both drives with zero errors.

As it is, the only BSOD I’ve received in days – a first since I first got the PC – was the previously mentioned one that occurred with Driver Verifier running. I’ll await your analysis of the minidump to know whether it’s the same issue (as far as you can tell) or something unrelated, which might mean that whatever was causing the BSODs has likely been resolved, perhaps as a result of removing the VPN/TAP software.

I will await further replies. For now, I consider the PC ready to be reset. I just wanted to diagnose the problem so that I wouldn’t inadvertently cause it again in the future.
