Solved Seemingly random BSOD & crashes

This is a new system running Windows 8.1. I have been having seemingly random BSOD and crashes. I disconnected a 2T USB backup drive and BSODs have slowed, but not disappeared. BSODs happen most often when waking the system, which seems to take far longer than it should. Error message vary. The most recent was a System Service Exception IRQ_Not_Less_or_Equal. I've done all I can think of.

You have 4 hard drives. What is the age of your Power Supply?

Please remove the Western Digital software. The wdcsam64.sys driver dates from 2008 and is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.

Please uninstall Gigabyte EasySaver (it's driver is gdrv.sys and it's known to cause BSOD's).

If this doesn't help out, then start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
Out of 8 memory dumps there were 5 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- missing Windows Updates
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers) - and older systems
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

Also, just in case, if the BSOD's continue - please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Thanks for so much to consider. I'm sure that something will help.
An update and some answers to your questions: in no particular order.
I didn't install WD software. The driver must have installed when I connected the drive. I have renamed the driver to wdcsam64.sy_ .
I didn't install Gigabyte EasySaver. The driver probably installed when I installed the System Information Viewer. I installed that when I noticed a high CPU temperature in BIOS. It confirmed the temperature and also that the CPU fan was at 0 RPM. Turns out that the wire that connects the fan to the MOBO had tightened enough to stop the fan. I caught it before the thermal protection wasn't effective. (Whew!) In addition to providing almost real-time temps and fan speeds, I have watched the voltages and observed them to be rock steady at 3.3875, 12.096, and 5.01. I am not overclocking. I renamed gdrv.sys to gdrv.sy_ and Hardware monitor has not protested.

I have booted into safe mode and run deep scans using ESS 7.0.317.4 followed by MalwareBytes 2.0.2.1012. Neither found anything. I'll post back in a few days, once I've had a chance to see if the issue is resolved.

Be careful when renaming drivers. If the system needs them to boot you may find that the system won't boot to Windows (I've found this with a CD/DVD driver from a popular burning program.

The "fix" is to use System Restore from the Startup Repair function to restore the system to before you changed the driver names (you have to have System Restore enabled for this to work) or to go back in and re-rename the drivers back to their original name (using the Startup Repair Command Prompt option).

BTW - check to see if the drivers have remained renamed. At times Windows System Protection will change them back to the original name with out telling you! :(

Thanks for the warning about Windows reinstalling the offending driver. When I searched gdrv.sys had been replaced. Interestingly, both gdrv.sys and gdrv.sy_ were in the Windows directory.

I did have a BSOD this morning when waking the computer. The error flashed by too fast for me to see before the system restarted. I did check event viewer and it looked like mbam.sys had several errors immediately before the BSOD. It has caused issues when ESS is also installed, so I uninstalled MalwareBytes using the control panel and then ran their program to remove anything left behind.

Thanks John,
I tried to zip the minidumps, but it failed. I copied the folder onto the desktop, first. I run under a limited user but tried running WinRAR as administrator with no luck. I knocked around the security properties of the dumps and it looks like system is the owner, though taking ownership did not seem to help. Argh! I'm getting too old to keep up! LOL!

I have gone may days without a BSOD, so maybe it's fixed.

What I have done:
Renamed wdcsam64.sys, so it wouldn't run
Uninstalled Malwarebytes

gdrv.sys and AppleCharger.sys (both GigaByte installed with MOBO utilities) have reinstalled themselves, but don't seem to be the cause of my BSODs.

I first uninstalled the driver wdcsam64.sys. The BSODs were mostly gone. MalwareBytes was uninstalled when it showed as running during the only BSOD afterwards. I remember that MalwareBytes and ESS sometimes conflict even when MWB is not set for real-time protection. Since I was done using it, completely wiping it away was no big deal. Thanks for steering my thinking in the right direction.

Should it recur, you may want to try uploading the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump folder to an online file-hosting site and posting the link to them here.

They're baack...

Since my last post, I did some updating and uninstalling so that I now only get BSOD's when waking from sleep. It happened today, Oct. 11,2014 around 12:30pm. I don't see a minidump with a 101114 name, so there is no record of it. Actually, what happened was that I moved the mouse to wake the system and it beeped once and began POST and then booted Windows. As a reminder, I am not overclocking. Since my last post I have:
Uninstalled Gigabyte App Center
Deleted gdrv.sys and AppleCharger.sys, both leftovers from App Center uninstall
Updated BIOS to latest
Updated Intel video driver to latest
Run MalwareBytes and ESS deep scan. Both detected no malware.
Ran CPUID Hardware Monitor Pro to verify that all cores of the cpu, chipset and drives stayed well below 40 degrees C, the highest was core #0 at 37.0 degrees C. Voltages were rock steady.
Ran Memtest86+ for 1 pass with no errors. It would only use one core and ran for over 1hour to complete 1 pass.
Ran driver verifier for a few days before turning it off because the frequent crashes were disrupting my work. I didn't know where those dumps were or
Discovered that the backup drive used by ShadowProtect (G:) was full and causing it to error. I freed significant space on drive G:
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Don

Let's have a look at this report. It may reveal something about the lack of memory dumps.

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Thanks John,
I had to take my dog to the vet to have a hot spot checked out. When I came back the computer took a long time trying to wake and finally rebooted. The event viewer may reflect that event, as well. Yesterday, I let Memtest 86+ run for 5 hours. After 3 passes, there were 0 errors.

Microsoft Natural - the same one I've used since it orignally came out around 1995
    Mouse
    no Mouse - Trackball!!!!
    Internet Speed
too slow when I'm waiting for a download to finish
    Browser

FYI:
Seagate Sea Tools DOS CD showed no drives found.
WD Lifeguard Tools mis-identified the SSD and 2TB WD internal as IDE rather than SATA3 and SATA2.
Results:
Samsung Magician 4 gave SSD health as good
WD Lifeguard
All SMART - Pass
WD 320GB drive Extended test - OK
WD 2TB drive Extended test - OK
HD Tune
All SMART - OK
All Error scans - OK

The C: drive is a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD in good health with 102GB free and 108GB used.
Drive H: is a WD 320GB drive
Drive G: is a WD Green 2TB drive. Hmmm. since I have BSODs after waking, maybe I should change the power settings so the drive does not hibernate.
Changed SSD OS Optimization to Maximum Performance and enabled Real Time Acceleration Processing of I/O Data Mode.
Modified power settings of Samsung High Performance to never sleep or hibernate and never turn off hardisk.
I'm seeing peppier performance and the system was almost immediately available after moving mouse this AM. We'll see if this continues.
