BSOD when playing any game

Hi, first time using the forum.

I recently purchased a 2nd hand PC back in June and unfortunately have experienced about a dozen BSODs when playing games.
They seem to occur randomly. There has been times where I have been able to play games for hours without BSOD at all.

I thought it was an issue with my graphics card drivers so I updated them to the latest version (I believe AMD 14.2) but the Blue screens continued to happen. I restored the drivers back to default and that is what I am currently using.

Thanks for any assistance that you can provide,

Your BIOS dates from 2010. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.
NOTE: these symptoms were from the previous release of OverDrive. The new release uses the same driver name, but is dated from 4 November 2013.
Please un-install all AMD/ATI video stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then, download (but DO NOT install) a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD (in the upper right corner of the page)
Use this procedure to install the DRIVER ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Un-install". Reboot for changes to take affect.
Sometimes the driver remains and continues to cause BSOD's. If this is the case for you, post back and we'll give further instructions for safely removing it.

If overclocking, please stop. Remove the overclock and return the system to stock/standard values while we're troubleshooting. Once the system is stable again, feel free to resume the overclocking.

If that doesn't help, then start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
Start with the video tests as that's the most likely culprit here.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

ASACPI.sys Thu Nov 1 21:54:34 2012 (509327DA)
Asus ATK0110 ACPI Utility. Also a part of many Asus utilities (Win8 versions available from Windows Update as an Optional Update - but check Asus first!)
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=ASACPI.sys

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

Thank you for your reply. I didn't want to post until I had another problem.

Unfortunately I've experienced multiple blue screen errors over the past few days. I did remove the Overdrive program as instructed but have been unable to update my BIOS.
The blue screen in bluescreenview lists 'dxgmms1.sys' as the problem (Directx Graphics MMS). I never had this error before.
I've attached the files to this post.

I'm starting to think that this could be a power issue. My graphics card is an AMD 7970 and I have a 550w power unit.
The card recommends a 500w. I don't know if this is too close to the recommendation.

Thanks,

The recommendation for a PSU is based on an average. If you don't fit the average, then even a 500 watt may not be enough.
What exactly do you have plugged into the motherboard - both internally and externally (plugged into the case).
With this info I'll suggest unplugging some stuff (which should lessen the load on the PSU) - and it may change the frequency of the BSOD's.

Or, you can purchase a new, more powerful PSU from a shop that will let you return it (for a full refund) and you can see if that helps.

These memory dumps seem to confirm that we're probably looking at a hardware problem here (although we haven't fully ruled out all of the possible driver problems) To help rule out driver problems you can run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

You can also start with these free hardware diagnostics (the OCCT program also has a PSU test - but I'm not familiar with it, so you'll have to read the documentation to use it): Hardware Diagnostics
