Solved BSOD after running chkdsk for 120 hours on broken HDD

Hello, I helped a friend with his broken HDD, ran chkdsk on it , after 120 hours it had gone up to 45% only and I got a bluescreen while playing dota 2 so chkdsk was interupted, when the pc jumped back I could access the HDD but it was super slow and after a restart I couldnt access it anymore, I unplugged the HDD thought it was gone forever and today I got another BSOD while I was on youtube. I got really scared cause I have had tons of trouble with this PC but after I switched out a damaged motherboard it all dissapeared and the PC was finally working 100%.

I deleted the old dumpfiles cause they were from when my motherboard was broken, if you find traces of the old dumpfiles, ignore them cause that problem is solved, its dumpfiles from july (its 2 of them) that are making me scared if I made a big mistake letting chkdsk run for that long on a bad hdd :/

Thanks in advance I would be soo glad if I can fix this!

Welcome bear021. Sounds like that drive needs to be replaced and fast. I would salvage whatever you can from it and buy a new one. Maybe even consider an SSD.

If determined to try and salvage the drive, backup what you can, low-level wipe it, format it and run chkdsk from a bootable repair disk. See what the results are then.

To be honest I dont care about the drive, I told a friend I will do my best to help him recover data from it , its the 2 bluescreens which came after the chkdsk repair Iam very worried about. Ever since I replaced the motherboard the PC have been working flawless so it cant be a coincident that I get 2 BSODS after the HDD was being repaired. The HDD isnt even plugged in or anything now and I still got that second BSOD when I was on youtube so it must have done some harm =/

Oh, misunderstood what you were saying. Don't think running chkdsk that long on an external drive should have caused your problem although that is an excessively long time to let it run. Do you have a restore point to go back to just to see if any difference?

Have you run tests on your drive?

I have restore points but its pretty far back I think, Isnt it possible to see what causes the BSODS? forgive me but Im not very good at this so I cant make sense of the dumpfiles :D , after the chkdsk got interupted first time by bsod I tried to access it when I started the PC , I could get in the drive but everything was very slow , took 30 sec to enter a map. I restarted and then then I couldnt access the drive anymore , I plugged it out and havnt touched it since. I dont care about the drive if its damaged or not so I havnt tested it , Im only conserned over the BSODS.
s
@Nuccii. No I have not done anything related to harddrives, its not my drive so I havnt replaced it either, I helped a friend check it , PC worked fine before and during the check until I got the first BSOD, PC restarted , I could access drive, PC froze , I restarted and couldnt access anymore, unplugged HDD yesterday, got BSOD today with the HDD unplugged =/

You are not being very clear here. Is it the internal HD or external HD that is causing the problem and have you run the SMART tests I suggested?

Okey I apologize. Gonna try to do a better shot.

The drive I was running chkdsk on is an external drive. The drive itself is not important, therefor I have not made tests on the drive. The health of the drive does not concern me.

I may have been a bit unclear with this post but the help im looking for is help with my bluescreens, 2 of them. There is a link in my first post.

And since the second bluescreen occured today when the external harddrive was not connected to the PC I feel that its not responsible for this.

The reason I mentioned all of this is because I thought it is related to the BSODs since I got 2 BSODs after the long chkdsk session.

The dump files show it is due to ntoskrnl.exe which can be many things. I would start by running sfc scannow as shown here:

Okey, Iam running that now , I wil lget back once its done thanks :)

Okey so I got an Idea.
When the the chkdsk got interupted and the PC restarted I could go into the drive when the PC booted again, which I wasnt able to do earlier. I dragged out 2 pictures on my desktop to see if I could look at them and I could. I deleted them and then the PC froze and I restarted and after that restart I couldnt access the drive anymore, so I plugged it out.

And now I did the sfc /scannow . It says:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.

Is it possible that when I dragged those 2 picutres out on my desktop (which would be my C: drive , SSD) that my C drive got damaged or something by those pictures ? :S

I dunno about the picture thing but you should now run DISM since sfc can't fix the errors: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorial...nent-store-corruption-windows-8-a.html?filter[1]=Performance%20Maintenance

After running Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth run sfc /scannow again to verify everything is fixed.

Yeah I did so and this must be a good sign right ? :

C:\Windows\system32>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Yes, a good thing. Now we see what happens. Have you reboot, you should.

I would run chkdsk /f on your drive also the first chance you get. Should take no more than couple of hours depending on drive size.

Okey! I have restarted PC and havnt noticed anything but I had 2 BSODS in a total of 30 hours or so, so its too soon to tell, but I would like to believe its fixed now :D

THANK YOU so much for your very quick responses and detailed help! It is much appreciated, I will watch the computer carefully the next 3 days or so to see if its acting up or if its all fixed!
