Hi,
I have a lenovo z580 running 8.1.
I've been experiencing several bsods lately.
One of the is the 'bad pool header' the other being 'dpc watch dog violation'
It usually happens whever I am using a second screen.
I've attached the dump files.
I hope you can help me resolve the problem.

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Windoes 7, Windows 8.1, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
    Computer type
    PC/Desktop
    System Manufacturer/Model
    Lenovo z580
    CPU
    i3 (Sandy Bridge)
    Memory
    6 GB
    Graphics Card(s)
    intel hd 3000 i think
    Monitor(s) Displays
    some acer led screen
    Hard Drives
    sandisk ssdsdp128G
hitachi hdd in optical bay drive
I've seen many times where VMWare and VirtualBox are present when a system has issues w/BSOD's
I'd suggest uninstalling both in order to see if this stops the BSOD's.

This device is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?
VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet8 ROOT\VMWARE\0001 This device is disabled.
Please enable the device and update it's drivers (if keeping the program installed). If it's not needed, please uninstall the program.

I'd start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics Start with MemTest86+ and Prime95 - as I suspect a memory issue here. If they pass, then do the rest of the diagnostics. Let us know the results and we'll move on from there.

Concerning the driver in red, it is the Lenovo HD Disk Driver. How would I go about removing or updating it?
I have two hard drives. An ssd and an hdd in the optical bay drive.

I'll run MemTest86+ and Prime95 and post back.

ok. And how long should I run memtest86+ for?
I ran it for about 45 minutes. No errors.
I'll be running Prime95 for the 6 hours.

MemTest86+ should run for at least 3 passes
Prime95 should run for at least 24 hours - but 6 hours will find most errors.

I ran MemTest86+ for 3 passes got no errors.
And Prime 95 for 7 hours. Cpu temp was about 83 degree C. I then stopped it.

Did some browsing. And streamed a movie on my second screen. Streamed the movie on google chrome full screen on the second screen. While I had about 4 tabs open on firefox. Then it bsod again.

83º C is pretty hot. Make sure that you're using the laptop on a flat surface. Please use a laptop cooling pad also (if at all possible)

Monitor the temps when doing the brownsing/streaming that you describe above. See if the temp spikes just before the BSOD.

Please zip up and upload the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump. You may have to copy it to your Desktop in order to zip it up.

The laptop is always on a flat surface on my desk. I'll get hold of a cooling pad.
There's one more thing I forgot to add to the description. At times, the sound will become distorted and the laptop will freeze. Then bsod.
Also, I have a windows 7 partition on my ssd. And I do not recall having a bsod while using w7. Could the bsod be related to 8.1?

I'm using coretemp to log the temp. will provide results at the next bsod.

I've attached the minidump file. Do I need to run diagnostic tool again?
The newest dump file is dated july 10 though it bsod this morning july 12.

The sound problems/freezing can also be heat related - so that's the first thing that we need to rule out.
Does coretemp record video temps also (if your system has a video temp sensor)?
I like this free tool for temps: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

No need to rerun the diagnostic tool again.

When a system BSOD's it tries to create a minidump. But (especially with hardware/overheating problems) it may not have the time or the resources to generate the memory dump. In this case there was a memory dump generated on 10 July that we haven't looked at - but there isn't one from 13 July.

You can check the date on the MEMORY.dmp file (in the C:\Windows directory), it may be that the large memory dump was captured but wasn't able to extract a minidump. If it's from 13 July, then zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service and post a link to it here (it'll be too big to upload here).

Here's the one from the 10th. It's similar to the other STOP 0x19 errors that you've had. Let's look at the heat/temperatures when it crashes and we'll figure out where to go from there:

Hey,
Coretemp logs the core temperatures in a csv file.
The last temperature recorded at the bsod was 74 deg C. It was at that temp for the past 30mins.I attached the minidump and excel file related to that bsod.

I'm going to try to replicate the bsod on my windows 7 partition. Could it be a windows/driver issue?

I can't find that MEMORY.dmp file you mentioned.View attachment 46951

Is the memory usage too high?

74ºC is very high - I don't know what the specs are for your laptop, but that is most likely on the high edge. A cooling pad is needed to help the cooling of the system. Check with Lenovo to see how high the temp needs to get before they'll service a system for that (if still under warranty).

Roughly 90% of BSOD's are due to 3rd party (non-Windows) drivers
Less than 10% of BSOD's are due to hardware problems (this includes incompatibilities, overclocking, overheating, etc)
Less than 1% of BSOD's are due to Windows drivers - but this presumes that the system is fully updated.

A steady rate of high memory usage (as the graph depicts) is usually a problem.
Check in the Details tab of Task Manager.
Click on the Memory column so that the processes sort by that
Let us know the top processes and we'll work from there.
FWIW - the high memory usage can be responsible for the increased temps

I'm pretty sure this is an overheating problem, but please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.
