SCHANNEL Error 36888

These schannel errors have been around for a long time and have affected virtually all Microsoft Operating systems since XP. Unfortunately, there's no single fix for these issues but the cause is invariably network related. I had a number of these in my event log several days ago, but the image had been refreshed several times since then and I haven't seen any for a couple of days. I have however downloaded Windows updates and a couple of applications from the store. Just out of interest, was the application you got from the store free or paid?

The first thing I'd suggest is making sure your time and date are correct, then, if possible, try alternative network connections. If using WiFi, try wired. If you're using any third party security applications, temporarily disable them and try the connection again. If you have a router, as a test, try placing the PC in the DMZ. If using the Windows firewall, temporally disable it. Depending on your hardware, make sure any network related drivers are up to date. I think you can probably see a pattern here...

    Give the man a cigar!!
I just went to windows update and every time I tell it to check for updates it gives me 2 SChannel errors.

    Jim
The first time I told it to check for updates today, I got 6 SChannel errors. Checks made after that only give me 2 SChannel errors.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try them. I'm about ready to just ignore the errors as they don't appear to harm anything

It's happening because the server is HTTP only and the client (your machine) is trying to use HTTPS.

What to do? Disable logging for it - 0x0000 Do not log:

How to enable Schannel event logging in IIS

I guess my next question is, why is my machine trying to use HTTPS and not HTTP? . Is there a way to tell my machine to use HTTP?

Doubtful. Windows Update probably tries HTTPS for some function or request and then falls back to HTTP after. It's probably hard coded but I don't know too much of its inner workings. Disabling logging is the best way to go about it if the events are bothersome to you.

The HTTPS could even be for some future implementation or server that MS did not set up yet, but plan to. I dunno at all though; that's just speculation.

If you're feeling experimental, try running a Windows Update after the following registry change and a reboot:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\SSL 2.0\Client

    DisabledByDefault 0

Thanks for explaining like that. I just hate seeing the red X errors in the log. I don't mind warnings but the red X's bug me. I have disabled logging it now so I'll feel better when I look at my event logs. I just wish someone over in the Windows 7 Forums and Microsoft's Customer Service could explain the Side by Side error messages I get on all my Windows 7 machines (4) like you just explained my SChannel errors here. That one really bugs me.

Yes, then re-enable logging too, reboot, run Windows Update and then check the logs again for the 36888 error to be there or not.
