Solved Random BSOD (several reasons)

Hi Guys,


I have a very big problem now with my new computer, and I am now without a clue to solve that. Any help will be appreciated, as I pretend to use it as my work machine. Sorry for my english.


I build a new computer, with parts I bought from my regular suppliers, as I could build my new machine. The part list is here:


Main board ASUS IV Rampage Black Edition
CPU Intel i7 4930K
RAM 16 GB (2x8) GSkill TridentX XMP 2400Mhz.
2 x SSD OCZ Vector 240GB in RAID 0 (on Intel RAID)
1 x Asus Blue Ray recorder 16x
1 Dell Perc H310 Precision RAID Controller (PCIE 8x in one MB 16X Slot)
4 Seagate ST3000DM001 in RAID5 (on Dell Perc)
1 NVidia 560Ti 2GB (PCIR 8X in one 16X Slot – The only one piece wasn’t new)
1 PSU Corsair 1200AXi
1 Corsair H110i Water Cooler
3x140mm Coolers and 1x200mm cooler
1xCorsair 500R Case


First of all:
I build the machine carefully, connected everything as I should, but I did a small cut of my case to fit the main board (one corner of MB was too big to available space).
Everything was ok, and then I turned it on. All was ok, so I configured the computer (and disabled the factory default overclock). Change the RAM config to XMP and goes on to OS install.


During the Windows 8.1 Pro 64 install I received a lot of BSOD. After the BSODs I tried to test memory, with memtest and Windows memory Test and everything was Ok after 4 hours or more. I disabled some devices (Asmedia USB, others SATA controllers, onboard Broadcom Wifi adapter and Bluetooth device), and removed the Dell Perc H310 controller. Then Windows 8.1 was installed fine.


With Windows 8.1 running, I installed ASUS AI Suite, every driver I needed (Corsair Link, ASUS Gadgets and moved on). Still running fast and stable. Updated NVidia drivers to the last available, and updated every ASUS driver to the last version. Still stable.


After I inserted Perc H310, updated its firmware and drivers to the last version (Jan/2014) from Dell site. Created some partitions and installed some apps (Office 2013, Winpcap, Daemon Tools and something more).


Then I ran OCCT and Prime for about one hour each. Stressed my CPU, memory and GPU, without problems. I burned my new PC with SiSandra 2014 and completed all tests without problems. Then I updated my Windows to the end.


Two days later I, after a few time with the machine powered on, I received one, and after, a lot of BSODs again. Changed the GPU to a NVidia 210 with no results. Removed Perc controller and same thing, a new BSOD appeared. The BSOD reason varied, Memory Management, Attempted Write in Read Only memory, System Service Exception, and some more.


Then I back to NVidia 560Ti, removed PERC H310, changed the RAM for a good and old one, and still receiving BSODs. Upset, I started to read carefully the minidumps. Nothing was consistent and I tried do disable some old device drivers, uninstalled every ASUS driver and app, secdrv.sys, without problems. I noticed that one thing trigger the BSOD. When I try to copy a lot of data from my older computer, I receive a BSOD in a few minutes.


I am tired, upset and disappointed. Nothing I tried solved my problem. Spent several hours reading every log without solve this. I turned on verifier and the problems speeds up to the point of receive a BSOD during the OS boot. I spent about US$ 5000 (here in Brazil the part are expensive) in my new computer, and besides I am a IT pro for about 20 years I never had a problem like this (I already solved problems like that since Windows NT 3.1 was a new thing, but I have little experience with Windows 8.1 since I work with servers much more). I have no one compatible processor to change, but I doubt that this is my problem. There are no antivirus running now, and the install was made with original media, from Microsoft and downloaded from the official products page (there are no “unofficial” programs here) and this machine is one network segment that only had my old machine and my hardware firewall (Linksys RV320 Dual Wan router), both running without problems.


Does someone have any suggestion? I tested every part in others computers (except the CPU). There are no overheat problem (CPU temps don’t exceeded 45ºC, I can see that in ROG panel and using sensors from a NZXT fan controller).

All BSOD's happened around 3 things: AsUpIO.sys, Robocopy.exe and CFosspeed6.sys. It all started when you install the ASUS Utility software.
For testing purpose, I suggest that you uninstall the ASUS Utility completely. The other 2 might be the consequence of ASUS Utility. In addition, make sure you check with ASUS if there's a new BIOS firmware for your mother board.

Thanks topgundcp for your time. I already did removed all Asus utilities, CFosspeed6.sys and updated BIOS to the last revision, but some ASUS drivers were back after a restart.

After a lot of crashes, my system wasn't reliable, so I reinstalled Windows from scratch, updated everything with Windows update, and now I could copy my data for more than 80 minutes, with Robocop, and without any BSOD. I think there are some incompatibilities between Asus drivers and Dell Perc driver, as all BSODs occurred during high disk I/O (Windows installed NVidia drivers ver. 9.18.13.3523 from DVD).

Now I will install the others drivers, one by one, with a OS backup between them to find which driver has problems. I will post here the conclusion. Thanks again.

Yes, definitely is a good idea to make backup images.

The ASUS dvd or Windows DVD do not always have the latest drivers so you might want to update the drivers from the manufacturer web site.
FYI, The current version of NVIDIA driver is: 9.18.13.37.88. You should also update this driver Welcome to NVIDIA - World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies

Note: When installing the NVIDIA Drivers, select Custom then on the next screen, select Complete Clean Install

Another driver you might want to update is the Intel Chipset Driver. To check the intel chipset version, open regedit and it's under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\InfInst
The latest version is: 10.0.13

EDIT: Also check with OCZ if they have the new firmware for your SSD

After some tests I found the problem. The PERC Dell driver, when installed caused BSODs again. Everything works fine without Dell driver (Jan/2014). Now I am using the Windows 8 Microsoft driver to PERC RAID controller and the system is stable. Probably the Dell's driver was tested only in Dell motherboards, not ASUS.
