FYI I posted this on reddit first. Links are a mix of reddit/external sites.

My original posts can be found HERE. this includes a link to my other posts.

Last night I installed Windows 8.1 onto an external hard drive using this guide. I installed all updates on my laptop to current.
I then unplugged my internal HDD from my build, and connected the external through the usb 3.0 port.
Booted up, installed drivers from my different hardware and downloaded updates.
I have a fantastic amount of stability now. IF I don't do much on my computer. I tested this last night by leaving it on all night and It didn't blue screen.
HOWEVER if I start steam, and download- or install software, it eventually crashes. Minidumps can be foundHERE. I'd appreciate someones assistance in tracking down the culprit.
Some quick points:

  • Still running from my external
  • Internal HDD is unplugged
  • Motherboard was tested and replaced. no issue here.
  • Both RAM sticks were memtest'd, replaced etc. no issue here.
  • Video Card works well, problem persisted with IGFX.
  • CPU was tested with Intel's CPU diagnostic. no issue here.
  • Haven't tested my PSU (just moved, no friends :/ )
  • I have only ONE RAM running at a time, switching between ports for testing
  • Is it possible my ISO was corrupted?
  • I have a budget of $100 to put towards this problem.
I am open to screen sharing! Thank you all!

Hi Meziroth & Welcome to the forums ^_^,

I don't think that you would need to do screen sharing or even spend a dime on this one (touchwood!), although a reformat and reinstallation of the OS on your external hard disk might (Probability is extremely less) be required.

I have analyzed your dump files and below is the analysis provided just for informative purposes ^_^ :-

I have highlighted 2 drivers in RED and most likely the cause is the WDCSAM64.sys which is your Western Digital External Drive RAID Manager. Please uninstall this ASAP and see if the issue still persists or not. Furthermore, if the issue still persists, please remove the AsROCK App Charger application from your system.

Please post here back in case you face any further problem ^_^.

Hey!

I gave it a shot, throughout the day an had no luck. Bsod after both. They both reinstall on startup though. Should I provide another dump?

Thanks,
Meziroth

That's odd IMO. Those drivers should not come up after uninstalling. Did you uninstall the ASROCK software and the Western Digital Software from the Add/Remove from Control Panel?

Rename those two drivers and see if they still automatically come up on restart and yeah please provide me with the fresh Dump files ^_^.

Well, I wanted to double check my ram so I have been running memtest86+ for the last day (and today!). I uninstalled asrock from ADD/Remove as per your suggestions- it is now gone. WD does not come up in add/remove, although in device manager the driver is still present.

I will upload dumps this evening (7pm mytime). I ran Prime95 and had an error at the beginning too. I also removed my GPU, purchased new RAM to test. Same issues :/ I hope we can solve this!
