    win8 cp constant reboot loop

i installed the cp on my 8 yr old p4 dell and it would not recognize the sound card or onboard sound. i installed many different drivers trying to get my sound to work. finally... i downloaded a driver that windows did not want to install. i found an option to try anyway.

stupid me, i went for it. something got corrupted on the install and immediately went to reboot. now my pc is stuck in a constant cycle of rebooting.

i have no f8 option. no partition etc. my only option that i can see is a boot disc or preferably a boot from usb. but the tutorials all talk about the f8 deal first and then insert usb.

all i want to do is get back in and get my files before i reinstall xp.
i cannot afford to lose my info on the pc. someone please spell it out for me and help. is there a repair version that i can use? or am i forced to go buy a 16gig thumb drive?

thanx a ton. i feel lost without her.

    Hi,

Before we can offer better, more precise advise, may I ask why is it that you think F8 is not available to go to safe mode? If you boot the machine and keep on pressing it continuously until it shows, it may actually show heh.

Other than that, if you are able to get to safe mode, we will be able to help set your machine up just fine in Windows 8. May need some driver tweaks or whatnot, but that's not a huge issue at all.

Does trying to boot get stuck on some screen with a message? If so, what is it?

i dont know why i dont have use of f8 myself. but no... i dont have use of it. i can get into my bios and boot menu (f12). but no safe mode. anyways... i made it over to my brothers and burned the iso.

i did a refresh... and it is still in loop.

tried auto repair. it didnt work.

tried system restore. there is only one restore point. its taking a while. will reply with outcome.

the bsod with the big ass frown is the screen i see before it goes back to reboot.

are there any other options left if the sys restore doesnt work? why can i not enter safe mode?

also...as i further explore... it looks like folks have to go to the msconfig boot tab to enable safe mode.

No, safe mode should work by pressing F8 as I described. I've used it on Windows 8 CP many times myself already for certain things I needed to do.

I would make sure that the keyboard is plugged into a port on the motherboard instead of some add-on card. If you have a hub for USB, remove it and plug directly in.

Also in the bios, there should be a setting for Legacy USB or Legacy USB keyboard support. You want to make sure that is set to enabled or yes, then save.

If that all fails, try to plug in a PS/2 old skool type of keyboard to try to get into safe mode.

    Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS/2_connector

Please let us know if any of this is successful.

plugged in a ps2 keyboard and unplugged my bloototh from usb. when clicking f8 andsometimes shift f8 as other sites sayto do.... i get a keyboard malfunction. but i think i am getting that now instead of the too many keypresses beep.. this is new. what isnt newis my abilityto get into the bios andboot menu.

i know you are sitting there thinking you could just tap on my keyboard a couple times and get it into safemode. but i promise..... it will not happen.

Hahaha - I believe you though. No problems!

I edited in a little comment about Legacy support in the bios above. Worth checking.

Other than that, now that you have the .iso, you can simply re-install from scratch. The install will not delete any files as long as you don't go out of your way to format anything.

When it is done installing, all of your old files will be in C:\Windows.old

We can then help get all of your devices working well too.

install without format will not work. it says to remove disk...load windows...and then throw in the dvd.
what i consider to be my last option...
is there anything i can do with the command prompt on the iso to get to my documents?

if not.. the only way i see to get my pc back is to do a fresh install from scratch. in which case ill sling xp back on it so i can have my drivers back. and of course... kick and scream for a few secs as i come to the realization that my crap for the last eight years has gone poof.

The lesson is ; you should have a backup. Now with a Dell, for the F8 , you have to wait after the BIOS post, just before it start Windows.
