I built a system for my son's girlfriend (MSI 970A-G46 motherboard, AMD FX-6300 CPU, Corsair H60 cooler, Crucial 8GB DDR3 RAM, 120GB SSD, 2TB WD Hard drive, EVGA GTX-760 video card, Corsair 300 case, 14" case fans and a DVD RW drive.

The system loaded Win7 (and Win8) just fine but after a day or two, BSOD's would pop up, usually with the KVMode or System fault message. I checked the drivers, settings, overclock (turned it off), temps, etc... and the BSOD's continued.

I noticed that the BIOS kept resetting the SATA mode to "IDE" instead of "AHCI" as I set it, so I changed the IDE mode setting to "IDE", reinstalled Win7 and loaded everything and run Prime95 and stress tested the PC over the weekend with no BSOD's at all. She installed WatchDogs and played it for two days and no error messages or BSOD's, so I am happy that's what it was...

Does that mean that the BIOS needed to be updated, and/or the newest SATA drivers installed? Could very well have been the problem.

The BIOS is up-to-date and the drivers are current, so it's a flaw in the motherboard/BIOS. I've seen several references to this issue on the forums, so it is a common issue. I've got a nice, stable overclock on the system, so I'm not unhappy with the motherboard...

Bully. AHCI is supposed to be quite a bit faster than IDE, especially with SSDs. And I thought MSI was pretty good, only to learn that this is a common issue o.0

So far, my favorite boards are from ASUS, but more than likely they are also a bit more expensive.

Dusty,
FWIW, I usually buy ASUS boards, but this board/CPU combo was on sale at MicroCenter and I've purchased 7 of them over the past 4 months. This is the only one that has this issue and it's not serious enough for me to RMA it, especially since I got a very nice overclock out of it.

I've seen strange things from ASUS, Gigabyte and Intel boards, so it doesn't surprise me at all...

The system forcing it back to IDE would be a returnable item for me.

The switching may be caused by mechanical/electrical problems on the board, as you suspect, or possibly some device connected to the controller. If you have built several systems with this board and the others do not exhibit the problem, I would not hesitate to return it.

I suppose we could assume the RAID option would also not be available.

Saltgrass,
You make some good points. I'll be testing the board in RAID mode this weekend as I have 3 Samsung Spinpoint 500GB drives that were in a RAID array until recently. I really should send the board back for an RMA, but the overclocking performance has been so good that I really hate to do it right now...Of course, the issue could get worse and end my overclocking adventures, too. Of course, when the issue started, I shut off the overclocking and ran at stock speeds, but the BSOD's continued...

I suppose you would have to consider the Advantages with having an overclock as opposed to not having the SATA III ability. There may be other advantages of using the AHCI controller, but I do not have a list.

I may be prejudiced since I have never really seen a reason to run an overclock with the faster processors.

Edit: You do not really have to set up a RAID to check. I have seen, maybe a while ago, where Intel recommends running a system using the RAID controller even if you are not running a RAID system. So you could just install on the one drive, but I will assume you would encounter the same problems, If the controller is bad.

You did try another drive on the computer to rule out the one currently installed?
