Hi guys,
I have just put together my third build and I'm running into problems

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Patriot Viper 3 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 770 4GB Dual Superclocked ACX Video Card
Case: NZXT H440 (Red/Black) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: XFX ProSeries 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)
CPU Cooler: Kraken x60

A week or so ago I installed windows on the SSD, set everything up. I had some issues with windows detecting the HDD but once I installed all the motherboard drivers, new bios, etc., everything seemed good. Unfortunately I started hitting random BSODs quite frequently, each time a different type. I got frustrated so I re installed windows and did a more patient and methodical install of the drivers and software. Tonight I got around to installing the remaining motherboard drivers, as well as a few of my apps (things like Chrome, Dropbox, Evernote) as well as GPU drivers, Audio drivers, etc.

TONS of bsods!!

Hi guys, I REALLY need your help.

As I predicted, the wide variety of BSODs have begun in earnest. Mostly just browsing the web, I have not even installed any of my main productivity apps or any games.

So far in the last several hours I have run into several different BSODs including:

System_Service_Exception
Memory_Management
PFN_List_Corrupt
Unexpected_Kernel_Mode_Trap

Is it possible the z97 board is simply too new and doesn't have the proper driver support yet? I can't understand how else I would be getting different BSODs each time.

I would be happy to send in new logs or files to anyone who would be able to help.

You said most bsods occur while browsing the web, analysing your driverlist you have outdated drivers for your network adapters.

And it is known that many network devices with windows 7driver have problems with windows 8.1
You have a ASUS USB-N53 802.11a/b/g/n Network Adapter device with drivers from 2012. Please updatethis to the latest windows 8 compatible drivers from here Networking - USB-N53 - ASUS

Your TAP-Win32 Adapter V9 has outfated drivers from 2011, please update to windows 8.1 compatible drivers.

Hi again. So I unplugged the USB network adapter and was BSOD free for about 12 hours. I managed to go without any crashes in Chrome and even downloaded and installed Watch Dogs without issue. I did just encounter a blue screen but that may have been caused by the game. Something odd is happening though, I can't seem to open Event Viewer. I have tried from the start menu or from administrative tools, I click on the icon and nothing opens.

What is going on? Why won't it open?

I have just had several more BSODs. I have attached the dmp files here:

Is it normal for my memory.dmp file to be 544 MB? I have not attached that one due to size...

More errors, these seem to tie to NVIDIA drivers... These errors seem all over the map. Motherboard??

You have an ASUS USB-N53 802.11a/b/g/n Network Adapter
I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win8/8.1 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7 and later - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win8/8.1 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

Please install the drivers for this device:
Ethernet Controller PCI\VEN_1969&DEV_E091&SUBSYS_E0911849&REV_10\4&23B6D2A4&0&00E3 The drivers for this device are not installed.

It's difficult to pin the blame on any one thing here. Try this:
1. Get ALL available Windows Updates. It may take several trips to get them all
2. Start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
3. If all of the hardware tests pass, then run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings'

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

OpenHardwareMonitor.sys Sat Jul 26 09:29:37 2008 (488B26C1)

OpenHardwareMonitor.sys - this driver hasn't been added to the DRT as of this run. Please search Google/Bing for the driver if additional information is needed.

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

Thank you so much John.

a) I have since removed and uninstalled the USB adapter to see if that was the issue. If anything, I've had more blue screens so that unfortunately didn't help. However, I will purchase a new pci adapter as you recommend.

b) the reason I uninstalled the ethernet controller was because in another post of yours, I believed you had highlighted the instability of the atheros killer drivers. I will reinstall.

c) I will check and install any missing windows updates but i typically stay on top of that.

Before I proceed any further, I had contacted ASrock in the meantime and they want me to update the bios (which i had already done) and then try removing one stick of ram, and swapping with the other if BSODs continue. Would you recommend i pursue this course first?

Please understand that BSOD's are relatively rare occurrences. Lot's of people use the USB adapters without problems (my son is one of these). But as we've seen enough of these problems that blame these devices, we have to suspect them.

The Killer drivers aren't unstable - it's the Killer Network Manager that's been causing problems (and it's not used with all Killer cards).
And, AFAIK, the latest version that they released has fixed those issues.

Yes, please follow AsRock's suggestions.
In general, I prefer to always check hardware before trying to fix software.

Thanks John. I traded memory on my two pcs and pulled the gpu. What do you recommend I do after I swapped parts. Should I run something like prime95?

I'd like to see any new memory dumps that you may have had. Please zip up and upload the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump with your next post. You may have to copy it to your Desktop in order to zip it up.

Then, please try these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
Start with the MemTest86+ and the Prime95 (because AsRock suspected memory) - but realize that ALL of the tests do test memory (to include the hard drive test - as that's where virtual memory is stored in the pagefile) Let us know the results and we'll move on from there.

No errors so far! I ran prime95 for about 5 hours today with no issue.
Still running with swapped RAM from the other computer. Just popped in the GPU again tonight to see if that creates any issues!

Hey guys, I'm back. Still having issues. With the swapped RAM things seemed to work better, no BSODs anyway. The testing wasn't scientific, my wife used the computer for a few weeks while i was out of town and reported no problems. I have since swapped back to the original memory.

Odd things have been happening again however. MUCH less bsods than before (maybe re-seating everything helped).

I just got a Memory_Management BSOD a few minutes ago and I'm having really major issues with browsing the web.

Whether it be Chrome or Firefox, both crash regularly ("He's Dead Jim" in Chrome) to the point they become unusable. A reboot seems to help temporarily.

I'm trying to test the ram but can't get the USB boot to work on either Memtest86 or 86+, see http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/50483-usb-memtest86-vanilla-doesn-t-boot.html#post405965.

Use Prime95 to test the RAM within Windows. IMO it's not as thorough (and it's a different sort of test), but it works on most occasions. Prime95

On a system that comes w/Win8 installed - you have to mess around with the UEFI, Secure Boot, and the CSM/Legacy mode in order to get it to boot from the CD/DVD.

But, it seems to me that you've done the ultimate test (replacing the RAM)
And, when replaced, you didn't suffer from BSOD's
That says it's the old RAM to me

User-mode crashes (such as Firefox and Chrome crashes) are different from BSOD's (which are kernel-mode crashes).
Let's start with this:
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

The latest memory dumps also seem to point at hardware - so please complete the other diagnostics (to be sure that it's not another problem - or multiple problems). If unable to boot from a CD/DVD for the hard drive test, run the SeaTools for Windows test from within Windows.

Please remove (un-install) the program responsible for these older drivers. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

REMOVE this one as it's known to cause BSOD's due to the old WinRing libraries:

Also, please remove Open Hardware Monitor. It uses the WinRing libraries which have been known to cause BSOD's on some systems. I'll edit my previous post to reflect this.

Thanks John. Just wanted to give you a quick update before I pour over your latest post.

Over the past day I have run some serious memtest86+ on the ram. Before doing this I did another fresh install of Windows 8, and installed as little as possible. Things like Open Hardware Monitor are no longer in play. I figured out the issue with booting from USB, this is working fine now. I also now have Event Viewer back with the fresh windows install.

Specifically, this should have removed any issue surrounding these two, but I can't be sure for the other three.

For the RAM testing, I am half done, and will continue overnight unless you tell me otherwise.

So far, I have run the first stick of RAM through about 5 hours of testing in each of the 4 DIMM slots. I am doing the tests with only one stick in at a time, so I am now going to start doing the same test with the other stick. So far, I have had ZERO errors whatsoever in all the testing. Each test runs at least 5 hours. This equates to about 20 hours of testing on the first stick.

I took a break from testing to see if i'd get any issues playing around, I opened up a game (Heartstone) and tried to play a round but got a new BSOD "Attempted Executive of No Execute Memory".:cry:

anyway, I will now go over your last post. Just wanted to provide the latest intel.

EDIT: Added two uploads. I hope this doesn't mess things up for you but the information is only since the latest windows install, so a couple days only. Here are the two minidumps and the admin file you requested.

THANK YOU

PS. The ram is from Amazon, I'm over the return window at this point but maybe there is some flexibility given the amount of troubleshooting that some system builds require. I could just try returning them outright, but I'm worried it could be something with the board.

EDIT2: So just got another Memory BSOD, not included in the uploaded files though. let me know if you want it. This is what worries me because I just tested this same stick of ram in all four slots and there were no errors found...

EDIT3:
In light of above, I'm wondering if i should just RMA the board and see if it was the culprit?

First, try this:
There may be a problem with the nVidia Streaming Kernel Service. Possible fixes are listed here: http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=NvStreamKms.sys

With these 2 memory dumps, I have to wonder about the video here.
One blames the video, while the other blames memory (which could be video memory)
Both have short lists of 3rd party drivers involved in the dumps - which are most often seen with hardware problems.
It could also be a Windows problem - but I ruled that out because you reinstalled Windows recently and still have BSOD issues.

If the fix for the nvidia Streaming Kernel service doesn't help, then I would suggest running the video stress tests from here: Hardware Diagnostics
You had mentioned earlier that you'd pulled the GPU - what are you using now? Do you have another card to test with?
If you test with 2 different video cards and still get BSOD's with both - I'd go for an RMA on the motherboard.

There are no reliable, 100% effective motherboard tests (they're too expensive to develop for a product with a limited life-span). Normally I try to rule out everything before saying it's a motherboard problem - but you're limited on when you can submit an RMA, so it's best to do it now while it can still be RMA'd.
