    Weird problem on startup

Hi, I've recently installed Windows 8 consumer preview on my laptop, and at first it worked like a charm (except with games, which had glitchy graphics). But after I've installed new drivers directly from Nvidia for my graphics card, a geforce 540m, the unlock screen stopped appearing on my computer after rebooting, which makes it impossible for me to access my software. The mouse still appears and can move around the screen, and it is possible to increase and decrease the volume, but not much else. What should I do?

    Hi,

Power off the machine and then disconnect any 2nd monitor or tv from the machine. Leave only the 1 main monitor connected. Reboot to normal mode and fixed.

Re-attach anything you disconnected if you want it to work again.

    -------

If issues persist and that did not help:

Reboot the machine and continuously press F8 until the boot choice screen appears. Choose safe mode.

Once to safe mode desktop, press ctrl+shift+escape on the keyboard. Go to startup tab and disable the NVIDIA selection(s) along with anything else you might not want to start with Windows.

    Reboot to normal mode.

Thanks, I'm trying your second method right now. I was able to go on the desktop using the safe mode, but rebooting with the nvidia files disabled does not seem to help... weird.

I restored to a previous state, which works, but now my video card driver files are not updated. Wonder if there's a safe way to make sure I can play games on my laptop in windows 8.

    You're welcome.

Yes, there is. Download the latest NVIDIA driver for your laptop. Run it. Let it extract but do not let it install after extraction. Close the installer at this point.

Open Device Manager and install the driver through there by pointing it to the extracted folder. Reboot if it asks you to.
