Solved New PC, freezes/bsods in games, some HDD errors

Hi everyone! Built a new PC a couple of weeks ago and its been a nightmare ever since.

I have:

  • Intel i5 4440 CPU
  • ASUS H81M-L motherboard
  • NVIDIA GTX 760
  • 8 gigs of memory, single Kingston stick
  • Corsair VS550 550w PSU
  • WD10EZEX 1tb HDD
  • All runs on Windows 8.1

I get freezes in games with a sound loop, but only in games! media/surfing/downloading is just fine. Sometimes the PC unfreezes after a minute or two, sometimes it goes into BSOD with one these:
  • CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED
  • KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
At the time of the freeze, the following message is being posted into event log: "Reset to device \Device\Raidport0 was issued", source either storeahci or iastora, depending on which AHCI driver I tried. Seeing how games behave (sometimes sound goes off or items are not getting hacked in Watch_Dogs), it seems that the HDD goes offline/powers down/whatever else. My humble google skills yielded dozens of pages, and I seem to have tried every possible solution, from playing around power management in both BIOS and OS to switching cables and all kinds of drivers. To no avail.

The worst part of it all, there are no dumps on BSODs. I tried setting up my page file accordingly to make sure they're being made, but there's still none. The BSOD is stuck at 0% dump completion. So yeah... Help, please?

Thank you for replying. I've attached the SF Diagnostic tool results. I ran hardware diagnostics a while back, including, but not limited to: passmark, memtest, hdd scan with WD utility, GPU benchmarks (heaven, furmark). Everything clean, except for a couple of uncorrectable sectors on HDD. The system tends to withstand very heavy benchmarks. Its the games I'm having trouble with, my hard drive seems to "time out" and it takes a while for it to come back up. Once it comes back, it writes down event 129 ("Reset to device was issued" kind of thing). Another important thing I've noticed is that it tends to lock up in the same spots when playing, which leads me to believe this is a software issue.

The log I attached was collected right after my PC froze and recovered in a video game. The last 3 events were "Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued." by iaStorA.

I'm also getting these errors from time to time:
"The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device ACPI\PNP0A0A\2&daba3ff&2."
... but from I understand these are relatively normal.

You have a D-Link DWA-140 Wireless N USB Adapter(rev.D
I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win8/8.1 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7 and later - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win8/8.1 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

The MSINFO32.nfo report is corrupted. Please do this:
MSINFO32:
Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Also, save a copy as a .txt file and include it also (it's much more difficult to read, but we have greater success in getting the info from it).

If you're having difficulties with the format, please open an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt and type (or copy/paste) "msinfo32 /nfo %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\TEST.NFO" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then navigate to Desktop to retrieve the TEST.NFO file. If you have difficulties with making this work, please post back. Then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.

As long as you're uploading stuff, please also do this:
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Try to run the Western Digital hard drive diagnostics (the long/extended test) from within Windows. Link here: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
If that doesn't work, then try the Seagate Seatools long/extended test.

If there are uncorrectable errors in the hard drive, then that's most likely the cause here. Also, the other symptoms that you describe can be related to the hard drive (to include the lack of memory dumps).
Also, check your cables and the connections that the cables make.

Good luck!

It was a faulty motherboard. Yesterday it finally gave in and refused to turn on. I took it to the supplier, got a refund and bought a new one, this time MSI (h81m-e33). Works good.

By the way, the hard drive passed the SeaGate long generic and it seems those 3 blocks aren't that big of a deal. I heard hard drives are pretty intelligent about circumventing the bad sectors. I'll be monitoring the situation, though.

Thanks for your help!

At work we replace any hard drive that fails any part of the test.
The reasoning is that further errors could easily happen on a drive that's already spontaneously developed problems.

I'd suggest monitoring the drive (testing it again after a week or two) and see if errors recur.
Also, keep good backups until you're sure it's not going to die on you.

If the errors do recur/get worse, then you'll have to consider if this is a progressive problem that will end up with you replacing the drive.

I strongly agree. The errors could be for a variety if reasons. But if the heads of your drive have contacted the surface, it's just a matter of time before your errors get worse, seriously worse.

As you might already know, WD has EXCELLENT warranty replacement. You should still be able to be under warranty with your 1tb drive. If you register on their site and enter your serial number, they will tell you if you are eligible for a free replacement.
