Random BSOD (Kernel Security Check Failure)

    Hello there!

Lately I've been getting the same BSOD over and over. It wasn't as bad at first, but at this point it happens almost every day, sometimes multiple times.

    I'd appreciate any help

    Win8.1Pro - Finally!!!

Your BIOS dates from 2008. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

I have a Lenovo x61t tablet with a BIOS that dates from 2008 - and it is not compatible with Win8. I had to revert to Win7 in order to get any significant use out of it.

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

As I don't see anything significant in the reports, I'll make these suggestions:
    1. Get ALL available Windows Updates. It may take several trips to get them all
    2. Start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
    3. If all of the hardware tests pass, then run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings'

    Hey usasma,

First of all, thanks a bunch for the suggestions! I'm currently in the process of going through them all, but I need my computer a lot so the only time I have to run tests and such is during the night. Don't worry, I'll report back with results whenever I went through all of your suggestions.

That being said, I did run the ESET online scanner which returned nothing. I noticed something strange though (and I honestly should've noticed this before): I often leave my computer on overnight, and I realized that my computer hasn't had a single BSOD overnight. I let the ESET scanner also run overnight, and when I came back after around 9 hours, it was running just fine.

So I went through my list of software I use daily, and which are usually running at the time of a BSOD:
    - Notepad++
    - Photoshop CC
    - Teamviewer
    - Skype
    - OBS (https://obsproject.com/)

The crashes started recently, so I figured one the programs listed above could be the culprit.
Notepad++ is definitely not it, I've been using it for years and it didn't get an update around the time the crashes started.
Photoshop CC shouldn't be the cause either, as I've been using it long before the crashes started too.
Teamviewer is on the list of suspects, simply because I've started using it a lot more recently.
I've been using Skype even longer than Notepad++, and again: no updates around the time the crashes started.

That leaves me with OBS, Open Broadcaster Software. I recently started streaming my friend's screen (which he shares over Teamviewer) so he can stream himself drawing to Twitch without his internet limiting the quality (hence the increased use of Teamviewer). But I think the dates where I started using OBS and my computer started crashing are pretty close, they might even overlap. I don't have any proof on this, but since I've been streaming his screen for hours every day, it's hard to say whether my computer crashed on its own or OBS caused the crashes.

My friend is leaving for another town tomorrow, and won't be back until the 1st of June. If I don't have a single BSOD during that time, I guess it'd confirm that either Teamviewer or OBS (or the combination) is the cause.

That, of course, would leave me with the question why OBS is crashing my computer... If everything is okay without me using OBS, I will start experimenting with the 32bit version of OBS to see if it's any better.

A computer is a dynamic device. Nothing stays the same on it.
Even if you don't change your applications, Windows Updates can change the environment in which the applications run.

Programs cannot cause BSOD's, only drivers
But programs passing bad combinations can cause an exploit of a bug in a driver - which can then cause a BSOD.
(not quite as simple as this, but it'll serve as an example here)

I've had issues on the wife's system with Skype - we finally go rid of it (that was a Win7 system).

    Good luck!

Alright, here's a (late) update on the state of things.

OBS did cause the problems after all. To be more precise: After I stopped using the 64-bit version of OBS and started using the 32-bit version instead, all blue screens went away.

Sadly enough, a week after I discovered this lightning struck my neighbour's house and fried my computer along with a lot of other stuff I'm not sure what parts are broken, but for now the computer is gone.

Thanks a bunch for the help, I really appreciate the quick response

It's not often we get complimented on fast service (we're usually a couple of days behind due to the large workload) - so thanks for the kind words!

Sorry to hear about the lightning strike. We had one years ago and it took me months to fix one of our boys' systems (it turned out to be the modem - even though it wasn't even plugged in at the time).

Haha, that's funny since (almost) all our network devices also got killed because the lightning struck the ISP box next to our neighbor's shack as well as the shack itself, so electricity traveled through the LAN cables as well as the electricity net. We even lost our brand new router :\ Oh well, it happens! And you deserve the compliment

Ours traveled through the LAN cable also, but spared the router and cable modem.
I thought that I was safe because I had surge protectors on all the systems!

I went out and bought new surge protectors with cable and LAN protection built in.

Oh wow, my situation was the same, I also thought I was safe because we have surge protectors! I should look into LAN cable protection, thanks for the tip And now I'll stop bumping this thread, haha. Sorry
