My laptop crashing with grainy display

My dell inspiron n5010 running on Windows 8, today all of a sudden started showing some grains on the display.Soon after it happened, it showed me a message which says

"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restarts. were just collecting some error info, and then well restart for you (100% complete)".

The system restarted by itself and it started running system repair. The system repair screen is also grainy. After the repairing is done, it restarted showing Windows 8 logo(that too with grainy display). But nothing really happens after that and it its stuck. So I decided to switch it off and turn it back ON after sometimes. I did that and the PC booted with no issues with the display perfectly fine. But the same issue is repeating again and again and I will have to shut down the system for some time and then again turn it back ON to make it run normal.

I am attaching a screen shot.

Looks and sounds like heat related damage to the graphics hardware , have you checked the fan on the graphics card is actually spinning up and not caked with dust.

I dont feel like my graphics fan is working everytime. And I never cared for it as I thought it will spin only during when graphics intensive programs runs. Is it suppposed to run everytime when PC is on?

Not good. The fan/heat fins should be cleaned regularly. All laptops I've had, the fan runs all the time at low speed then cranks up under heavy load. It usually cools both the CPU and GPU.

what popeye says , the GPU fan should be running all the time , even when not being used intensively.

I too think that heat is causing the issue. What can I do regarding this issue?? Is taking the laptop to the service center the last thing I can do?? Is it gonna cost me too much?

Maybe there might be dust in the graphics adapter as well or a loose connection which led to the crashing of the Graphics Driver and then a Blue Screen of death because of that?

Anyways, Maddy could you by chance be able to grab those dump files or run the SF Diagnostic tool? Is this issue also occurring when running in the Safe Mode?

Does your laptop also has another graphics card installed or you only got the integrated one? If yes, then goto the BIOS settings and search there and you should be able to make your integrated graphics card as the default one and see if the problem still occurs.
