BSOD video tdr_failure nvlddmkm.sys

Hello!

I have a Lenovo Z710 laptop that I got in November. Since the very beginning it has given me BSOD video_tdr_failure (nvlddmkm.sys) errors on Civ 5 playing in DirectX10/11 mode. It would run fine in DirectX 9.

Okay, no big deal. I just played using 9. But I downloaded another game on Steam and the BSOD happened ~1 hour into it. Sometimes it's within 10 minutes, sometimes it'll be 3 or 4 hours, but it will always eventually happen. On Civ 5 it happens almost immediately. This also happens on certain Photoshop and After Effects filters as well.

It seems to be a common problem with this laptop. I have a dedicated NVidia GeForce 745M card as well as the Integrated one (4600). I have been on the phone with Lenovo and they tried to tell me it was NVidia's fault. Did chat support with NVidia and they were SUPER awesome and ran through so many tests with me before saying it was probably Lenovo.

Lenovo replaced my motherboard, and it still is happening. Lenovo wants to replace my graphics card, but honestly I want to rule out the idea of it being a software issue. I use my computer for work, as well as fun, and I can't keep sending my laptop to Texas to see if maybe this would fix it.

I have attached my logs to this post! Thank you so much for any help.

I'm just curious here - why is Secure Boot turned off? Don't change it now (it may make the system unbootable), but keep it in mind for when (and if) you reinstall Windows.

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link: Disk-Tools.com
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

There looks to be hundreds of STOP 0x142 (video) errors in the WER section of MSINFO32.

You have FurMark installed. Please describe what happened when you ran it last. Did the system overheat, did it crash, did it display video arifacting, were there any other issues?

Please follow these troubleshooting suggestions: Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117 - Sysnative Forums
Also, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

The last 7 memory dumps were STOP 0x116 - see the above notes for suggestions.
Also, please try these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
Feel free to skip the Furmark tests as long as you've had a good test result from it in the past..

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Finally, I have a hunch about the NvStreamKms.sys driver. Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

From a previous post of mine (located here: http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...artup-lid-closed-dpc-watchdog.html#post379761 ):
..... NvStreamKms.sys - an nVidia driver that belongs to the nVidia Streaming Kernel service.
Check this post out for a possible fix: https://forums.geforce.com/default/t...ezing-your-pc/
Or, you may want to uninstall the nVidia drivers and then install a fresh copy without the Streaming Kernel Service (I'm not familiar with nVidia drivers, so I don't even know if this is possible).

I have no idea why secure boot was turned off. I don't recall changing that setting!

Daemon Tools and the sptd driver are gone.

I was in the midst of typing a response that Furmark didn't do anything when I last ran it. I ran the 15 minute benchmark test. I literally just opened up the program to ensure that that was what the test was called and my computer did the BSOD. Never before has that happened with Furmark (granted, I've only used it twice). This was after I uninstalled daemon tools and used the tool you gave me to check the sptd. A reboot happened in between the uninstalls and the BSOD.

I'm about to leave for a few hours, but I wanted to at least get part of my reply posted before my computer decides to make me restart, again. I will edit this reply tonight with the rest of the tests. I think I'm going to avoid Furmark, however, after this last BSOD.

Okay. I did the driver verification that you linked to.

Upon reboot, I get to the login screen and I received a BSOD stating "Driver Verifier detected violation".
I was able to boot into safe mode and tried to run Civ 5. It crashed immediately after I pressed "Direct X 10/11" but did not result in a blue screen. I have attached the minidumps for today (including the BSOD I got earlier from Furmark)

Prime95 ran about 20 minutes without issue. I only stopped it because my temperature rose to 85% and that was what the link had said to stop it at. My laptop is usually quite cool in almost all situations, even games. Right now, about 2 minutes after stopping the test, it's at 50° C and dropping.

Try Furmark again to see if it causes crashes again.

Prime95 overheated the system - as such you have to wonder if the system is overheating on occasion.
Be sure that the laptop is placed on a hard surface when using it (and use a cooling pad, if possible)
Make sure that the fans are running and use canned air to blow out dirt/dust from the vents (DO NOT use a vacuum or an air compressor - they may damage the system).

The last 2 dumps (both are Driver Verifier enabled) blame this:

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I uninstalled the tablet last night before running those tests. I'm at work now, but, are those drivers still shown as installed? If so, I'm not sure how to remove them then.

Let's just wait and see what happens.
These drivers don't have a history of being problematic.
We can always rip them out by their roots later on (if we do suspect that they are the problem).

Once the nVidia service is stopped - and should the BSOD's continue - then you may want to run Driver Verifier again in order to see if it picks up anything different.

Couple things have happened.

Disabled nvstreamsvc.exe, which was the only thing in my services that was labeled NVIDIA Streamer Service. I could not find the .sys, so if you have any advice on how to disable that, it would be appreciated!

I ran Civ 5 and it actually lasted longer than two seconds. It probably went for a minute on the loading screen before crashing to blue screen.

I then re-ran Furmark and it lasted the entire 15 minute benchmark test with no problems. The computer temp was pretty normal at around 72° peak temperature.

I had to go run an errand so I shut my laptop top closed. When I returned, the screen was black and I could not wake it from sleep mode. This has happened before. Unsure if it's related or not, but I figured it was worth mentioning. I had to hard restart.

I am now about to run the driver verifier again with nvstreamsvc disabled. Will post the logs after for today.

--

Okay, I ran the driver verifier again and this time it did not error out when I restarted. I was able to get to my desktop and tried to run Civ 5, as that's usually the fastest way to test. It stayed on the loading screen for about 5 minutes before finally blue screening.

I have attached my mini-dumps for the day.

These are not Driver Verifier enabled memory dumps. This can be because of several different reasons - but the point is that I suspect that hardware problems are more likely than software problems at this point.

Please follow these troubleshooting suggestions: Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117 - Sysnative Forums
Also, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Also, please make sure that you update your video drivers to the latest, Win8.1 version available on the laptop's support website ( Lenovo Support - Drivers & Software (US) )
If you already have the latest version, please:
- download a fresh copy of the nVidia drivers
- uninstall the current nVidia drivers
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- monitor for further BSODs

If it still has problems, consider returning it for warranty repair.
Don't be surprised if Lenovo wants you to reinstall the operating system - so you may be better off if you do that first.

Good luck!

Presuming that you upgraded to Win8.1 (from Win8), I'd suggest updating all of the drivers at the Lenovo website.
I'm particularly concerned about those (above) that date from before Win8.1 was released (26 Oct 2013).
Make sure to update the Intel graphics drivers, the Bluetooth, the networking drivers, and any programs that relate to the video switching (if so equipped)

I installed all the drivers I could that are using 8.1. A lot of them do have dates before October, though.

Do you have a guess on what the problem may be hardware wise? I am scheduled to send it back for the second time. The first time they replaced the motherboard, this time they are apparently replacing the graphics card.

Thank you for your help. I'm hoping it gets fixed, otherwise I have no idea what they will do for me.

Driver dates are just a rough tool to gauge the drivers and possible compatibility.

My guess here is video - but that's just a guess as we haven't found any firm indication of exactly what's wrong here.
When I work on hardware problems at work it's fairly easy - I just replace parts until the system works normally
But I'm not the one waiting for the computer to come back from service.
And I only have to live with the system long enough to say "I think it's fixed" - you have to live with it the rest of the time.

I'd bring up the subject of a replacement if this repair doesn't work. It'll save the service center time, it'll save shipping, and it'll save you time (leading to a more satisfied customer).

Good luck1
