Crash on startup

So here's the problem:
I shut the machine down, everything seems to be OK. When I turn it on again, on FIRST startup my PC shuts down again right after that ugly fish comes up on the screen. When I start it then, everything works as it should.

Anyone else having this problem? Solutions?

This type of behavior often happens when the RAM settings are incorrect in the bios. The reason it happens is because the memory is not warmed up yet to operating temperature. And because of this, incorrect settings make themselves "visible" by causing errors.

As the memory warms up to operating temperature, there is a lot less chance of incorrect values causing issues. So this is why it doesn't work right away but then after, it seems the machine is great.

You are welcome to run CPU-Z and post screenshots of the memory and spd tabs if you would like us to inspect your settings for correctness. I would definitely follow Usasma's helpful advice too.

I've seen this issue plenty of times and memory settings are usually the root cause.

Sorry, I wasn't able to respond sooner.

First, GMan. This isn't the case. I happens all the time. Even when I turn it on seconds after shut down. Also, it started with W8.

Usasma, I was able to turn BootLog on, but I have no idea where to look for it now

The log is named ntbtlog.txt
And it's located in the root (C:\) of your hard drive
Another article I just saw also states that it may be in C:\Windows - so check in both places

i have EXact Problem!
however sometimes its boots first time fine...

vewy weird

however runs fine after that

You are very welcome to post screenshots of when running CPU-Z under system load - the spd tab and memory tab.

The same advice goes for you too, to follow what Usasma is saying. Perhaps he can help you if memory is not the issue. It might be though.

Well, I can't find the bootlog txt. It's not in any of the mentioned folders and search can't find it either.

It's common to think that one OS is a problem and the other is not because "one of them is good for a long time".

Very often, an OS just drives the machine in a different manner and shows the hardware issues while one does not.

An excellent universal example of this is that users say perfect machine on x32. on x64 bsods all the time.

That's because x64 uses extra parts of memory that x32 can not address. In a case like this, the bad address can only be accessed by x64. So a problem, but it only shows on one OS.

There are many other different examples. Perhaps simply 8 driving the machine differently than 7.

well everyone its seems nvstor.sys is the problem
i bet we have a nvidia m/b

this is the sata raid controller by nvidia
i changed it to an older driver and the problem goes away

look under device manager ...storage controllers..sata controller...
the latest driver by nividia is no good
try and older one ..
good luck

So, funny story. It's only happening when I turn it off through power settings (right panel) or Alt+F4. Everything is OK when I use power button on my keyboard.

OK, let's start with Capn Jack's collection tool: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2829-windows-8-log-collector.html#post33808

If that doesn't collect enough info, then we'll try a capture with Process Monitor during bootup. But that's gonna take a lot of work since I don't know how to do it myself - much less showing someone else how to do it.

Now, I personally know Usasma to be excellent in his diagnosis. He actually was the first one ever to show me symbols and how to get started. But even he can not do too much else without the proper information for us to go by, so I guess. :)

That is interesting feedback, ikt344. I use an older machine for my testing puposes. Possibly, therefore, it loads older drivers (?), but I have not experienced that problem. My driver version is, 10.6.0.22 date 12.09.2011. It would help me, for future use, if you could post back the date and version shown on your machine.

As you were able to boot your OS, the link to create the log file (ntbtlog.txt - in the root) was a little over complicated. Easier to set up through Msconfig Boot tab.
I have never heard the "warm up " theory before. It certainly doesn't sound correct, but there you go. Again, I would be interested in reading up something on that - anyone?

I'm not saying that is definitely the case here, but I am saying it is still a possibility.

I've fixed thousands upon thousands of machines online for people, and the memory is always the first go-to thing when dealing with this, because it's a likely candidate. Dealing with it fixes issues at times. You were a very active member on another forum when I helped quite a few users with the memory and this issue.

So basically, you could either believe me or just make as I'm telling tales. The former is cool by me because I generally like everyone and like to be trusted in return.

And with that part out of the way, the crash dump logs along with CPU-Z info, if they should exist, will definitely point to a quick resolution unless they are 0x124s.

Perhaps I worded my post badly? If so, my apologies.
I would never call another a liar! But my second hat (I am now retired) is in the electonics field, not neccessarily computer related. If I could read something on this aspect, it would certainly improve my overall knowledge.

I have seen that same issue called the 'Cold Boot' crash.

First boot when the computer has been off for 3-4 hours crashes, one or sometimes two re-boots later everything is fine.
I have fixed a few of these by adjusting the RAM settings, usually voltages for the RAM and/or memory controller. Once in a while the idle CPU voltage is the culprit.
