Solved Windows 8.1 - Kernel_Security_Check_Failure BSOD

Hi there,

I just got a blue screen out of the blue (pun intended) and was hoping to get some help. I've attached the dump files. The error said "Kernel_Security_Check_Failure". I'm running Windows 8.1. If it helps at all, I had CPUID HWMonitor and OpenHardwareMonitor both open looking at voltages temps, while I was running Cinebench when the BSOD occurred.

Any help is appreciated!

I just had another BSOD. Same error message. I've attached the new dump file to this post. Maybe we can find some sort of common factor?

This time I had CPUID HWMonitor open and was attempting to open Speccy.

Thanks again!

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

Please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates. It may take several trips to get them all.

You have at least 5 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

3 memory dumps and 2 of them point to networking drivers.

Corsair Link software has caused BSOD's on some Windows systems. Additionally, the drivers for your CorsairLINK_HardwareMonitor.sys driver date from 2008 - and are likely not compatible w/Win8.1 Please uninstall it in order to see if that helps stop/slow the BSOD's

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

AsUpIO.sys Mon Aug 2 22:47:59 2010 (4C57835F)
ASUS hardware monitoring software related
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=AsUpIO.sys

Please DO NOT uninstall this one - only update it:
ASUSFILTER.sys Tue Sep 20 11:46:33 2011 (4E78B559)
ASUS USB Hub filter driver
http://www.carrona.org/drivers/driver.php?id=ASUSFILTER.sys

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Hi Usasma,

My power supply is a Corsair HX750. It's 7 months old right now.

As for the three drivers you highlighted in red, are you able to give any other information on how to uninstall and/or update them?

I've read reports online that say Corsair Link doesn't play nice with the AI Suite that comes with Asus motherboards (I have the Asus Maximus Hero VI, running Windows 8.1). It seems like your analysis seems to definitely raise concerns on those very same processes/software, so we're probably on the right track. Unfortunately, it looks like Corsair link only has (some rather unsuccessful) beta drivers for Windows 8.1, so I'm not sure if updating will help me there. I'm going to see if I can uninstall the Corsair Link software altogether. However, I have to re-arrange the cabling so that the water cooler fans plug into the motherboard directly to retain fan control. If I uninstall the Corsair link software, will that also remove the HWMonitor driver automatically?

As for AsUpIO.sys and ASUSFILTER.sys, I can't seem to get any info on these outside of them being related to the ASUS utilities (which I guess are included in the AI Suite?).

Right now, the AI Suite is used for fan control (and would be used to additionally control the Corsair water cooler fans when I make the cabling switch). I'm not sure I can simply just uninstall this software - especially if I plan to uninstall Corsair Link.

Also, I've noticed that my BSOD's seem to happen only when I have hardware monitoring programs up (sometimes more than one at a time). Is there a chance that the different monitoring programs all pinging the motherboard sensors at the same time are causing a problem? Or maybe these monitoring programs are conflicting with Corsair and/or the AI Suite?

Can you use another program for fan control? I've seen others use SpeedFan, but haven't looked at this technology in years.
More on this later on in this post

Just a bit of explanation here....
I look for many different things when analyzing BSOD's
- one is older drivers (drivers that came from before the OS came out, or before the latest Service Pack (if it's a huge update of the OS)
- another is drivers that commonly pop up in systems that are having BSOD's - and that have a history of being blamed for BSOD's

The Corsair drivers meet both of the above criteria. Your Corsair drivers date from 2008 and are known to cause BSOD's - that's good enough for me to say that it's probably a likely cause.

As for the Asus drivers, they only come up as being old - but I have seen no evidence that they cause BSOD's. Also, there's very few updates available for these drivers - so it's not unusual for you to not be able to find any.

As you've noticed a relationship between hardware monitoring programs and the BSOD's, that'd make the suspect drivers (hardware monitoring) a likely cause.

So, I'd start by removing/uninstalling the Corsair Link hardware.
Then wait to see if the BSOD's recur.
If they do, then remove the Asus AI Suite
That's when you will have to find another fan monitoring utilty.
You may want to test SpeedFan (or another program of your choice) in preparation for this.

It's possible that the multiple monitoring programs may conflict - but I'd expect that the code writer would have to know that other parts of the system (the BIOS/UEFI in particular) would also need access to the sensors.
Although we can't completely rule out a miswritten program, the one's that you are using are all from reputable manufacturers - so I wouldn't expect that to be a problem.

I suspect the Corsair program just isn't compatible w/Win8.1 and that uninstalling it will probably solve this problem.

Good luck!

Usasma - I ended up trying the new Beta driver for Corsair link that is supposed to be compatible with Windows 8.1. (It turned out that switching the fan cables to the MoBo had some downsides, so I held off on that.)

I ran a ton of stress testing last night, and opened all of my hardware monitor programs, and couldn't cause a BSOD - so that could be good news! I'm not sure if I'm out of the water yet, but I'll keep pushing my computer and see if I can cause another one. If so, I'll upload a new set of dump files.

Thanks for all your help!
