Solved BSOD's at random, multiple errors

I've been having fairly frequent, seemingly random BSOD's lately, only major hardware change I've made recently was upgrade my videocard to my current Nvidia GTX 750 Ti.

Errors are multiple, including Kernel_Security_Check_Failure, PFN_List_Corrupt, and System_Service_Exception.

Ran memory check and hard drive error check, no problems there.

Appreciate any help you can offer, folks!

Just to add some more information, today I've had a DRIVER_OVVERAN_STACK_BUFFER and DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION bluescreen. I reinstalled video and audio drivers, no luck.

Is there any reason that you haven't updated to Win8.1 yet? I'm asking to see if there were problems with it.

Only 123 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

These devices have issues in Device Manager:
Officejet Pro 8600 ROOT\MULTIFUNCTION\0000 This device is disabled.

Not Available ROOT\MEDIA\0000 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Normally I don't worry about disabled printers, but please make sure that you have the latest, Win8.1 compatible drivers installed for it (drivers may be loaded before Windows disables the device).
The other device is related to your audio devices - please update all of them to enable the device.

Lot's of Live Kernel Events in the WER section of MSINFO32. Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

MSI Afterburner (along with Riva Tuner and EVGA Precision) are known to cause BSOD's in some Windows systems (it's driver is usually RTCore64.sys). Please un-install them immediately!

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

Out of 7 memory dumps there were 5 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link: Disk-Tools.com
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hehe, I haven't installed Windows 8.1 yet just because I haven't felt I really needed it. Just being lazy :p

The printer thing is strange, everything works fine for me. I'm using it over a network, it's not directly connected to this PC. Under Device Manager/Print queues it shows as "HP Officejet Pro 8600 class driver".

I have been noticing that when I boot my computer, I get CPU and "System" temp, CPU has lately been showing high 70's-80+ temp! Should I reapply thermal paste/new CPU fan? I'm using a stock AMD noisy turbine fan currently.

I'll get busy following your instructions, thanks a lot for the help!

HWMonitor shows CPU temps in the 40's-50's, so I guess no problem there.

I'd suggest that you investigate the temps further. CPU in the 70's and 80's is way too high.
It could be an issue with the sensors, or it could be a problem with the CPU/cooler.

Most of the Critical events (Event ID 41) are accompanied by a BugCheck (this is the expected behavior)
There are some that aren't accompanied by a BugCheck - and those are accompanied by this error:
An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not flush hive (file): ''.

I wonder about the failed I/O operation - and suggest you start by running these free diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics (Start with the hard drive test first).

Alright, I'll do that, thanks.

I went into windows update and found some old failed updates, manually uninstalled and redid them. No crashes so far, but we'll see. Also installed the drivers you listed.

In HWMonitor, my CPU temps right now are just below 70, sitting here with the browser open and a podcast running! Guess I should get a new CPU cooler! What's a good temp I should aim for under low load? I don't have anything overclocked, not interested in any liquid cooling or anything like that, what's a good basic cooler I can get?

Appreciate the help!

I like to keep my CPU's (on a desktop system) in the 50's - but even the low 60's should probably work OK. I start to worry as it gets into the high 60's and above.

A good cooling solution relies on many things - the first being where you live (and if you have A/C). I lived in El Paso, TX with a swamp cooler and my CPU was always hot! (here's an article that I wrote back then: Motherboard Temperatures | Overclockers )

Make sure that there's good airflow through the case and that the coolest air flows over the CPU cooler (you may even want to duct cool air into the CPU cooler). Make sure that you have good contact between the CPU and cooler along with adequate thermal compound (but not too much!). Ensure that the fan is running properly and that the cooler is free of dirt and dust. With this, the stock cooler will work just fine.

It's been a busy weekend, but I got around to running hard drive and memory diagnostics, no problems shown, but I'm going ahead and troubleshooting by just removing parts one by one to check if it's a hardware problem.

I had almost forgotten about this, but last year, when I originally built this machine, the PSU I had failed during a thunderstorm. The audio ports on the board stopped working afterwards, and I lost a hard drive, as well as a mouse plugged into the front USB port.

Yesterday, got around to making a bootable Windows 8 install USB stick, unplugged the hard drive my OS was on, and installed to a different hard drive. Still getting BSOD's while configuring updates during bootup. NOT GOOD!

Tomorrow, I plan to strip down to just a single stick of RAM, an older PSU I have, and on-board video, see what happens there.

I've been having people tell me it's my current PSU, what's the likelyhood of my PSU causing bluescreens?

Thanks for your help!

PSU's can cause BSOD's - but are not as likely as damage from a lightning strike.

Long ago my youngest son's computer took a lightning strike and we had problems troubleshooting it.
The strike came in through the cable and into the computer through the LAN port.
I replaced the hard drive and the RAM - and still had problems.

When I started replacing parts I found out that the 56k modem was the problem - even though it wasn't even connected!
Removing it solved my problems.

At work I've seen mobo damage due to lightning strikes. Your comment that the audio ports stopped working is suggestive of mobo damage.

You may get some other hints from here: Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting

If you have the same problems after switching PSU's - then it's unlikely to be the PSU (what are the chances that both PSU's are bad?)
The same goes for video cards.

Try the RAM in different slots. Run MemTest86+ on each stick individually - in each slot. It's a lot of work, but it may help.
You can also try Prime95 (the Blend test) - that stresses RAM differently from MemTest86+, so it may give different results (but it also stresses the CPU and the memory controller - so that will complicate the analysis of the results).

Good luck!

Well I've swapped out the PSU, no bluescreens for two days now. Really strange, I've seen PSU's fail but never like that. Getting a new board anyway just because of the damage already done to it. Thanks for all the help!
