Lenovo B590 various BSOD Windows 8.1

Hi,

I recently bought Lenovo B590 laptop, installed Windows 8.1 Pro on it, downloaded/installed latest drivers from Lenovo from my laptop. I see a quite a lot blue screen errors. Most likely these started to appear after I installed and played "return to ravenhearst" game. But even I have uninstalled the game I still get the errors.

NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I downloaded test tools (memory, vide, motherboard, pci express) from Lenovo websites but they could not locate any problem (I ran these tests only once for a single pass).

I also executed "sfc /verifyonly" command and it found no problem.

Mini dumps are attached. Can someone please have a look at them and pin point the problem?

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum): http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html Please use Option 1 as it provides Event Viewer logs.

Can you please provide links to the page(s) where you got the Lenovo tests? I'm not familiar with them and would like to see how they compare with the tests I recommend.

For starters:
At work we start all repairs with a set of diagnostics. Often they find problems that weren't even expected. It's a waste of time to try to fix software on a system that has hardware problems.
Please try these free diagnostics for starters: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Also, please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Out of 5 memory dumps there were 4 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

tvtvcamd.sys Tue Nov 29 22:48:06 2011 (4ED5A776)
Either a ThinkVantage communications driver, or a Lenovo virtual camera driver
tvtvcamd.sys - this driver hasn't been added to the DRT as of this run. Please search Google/Bing for the driver if additional information is needed.

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
It's a long shot w/these types of errors - but I've been surprised by it before.

Thanks for your detailed reply.

Thinkvantage communication utility uses integrated camera. It is sort of conferencing tool. I did saw an entry similar to “virtual camera driver” either in device manager or somewhere I don’t remember.

Here is what I did in last two days.

I installed a fresh copy of windows 8.1 (not an update as I did previously).

Installed drivers (all downloaded from Lenovo site) in following order:

  1. Chipset
  2. Intel management engine interface
  3. Intel SATA Controller AHCI Drive
  4. Display driver (windows 8)
  5. Audio
  6. Power management
  7. Wifi, Bluetooth, Ethernet Lan, Touchpad driver, Card reader, Integrated camera (driver didn’t find any matching camera and didn’t install-uses Microsoft driver), Autoscroll utility
  8. Lenovo Settings Dependency Package

When “ThinkVantage Communications Utility” is installed, it creates a control panel item “Lenovo Web Conferencing”. I did NOT this utility this time. I noticed that it is for Windows 7 and below. But I find this folder “C:\Program Files\Lenovo\Communications Utility” (don’t know what other software/driver installed it, and there is no control panel item) and it contains the file “tvtvcamd.sys”, last modified date of this file is 4.1.2014.

  • Previously I was not installing audio and wifi drivers as windows installed Microsoft’s driver.
  • Previously I was not installing “Intel SATA Controller AHCI Driver” because I saw that chipset update utility also installed this driver. But I found that separate driver provided by Lenovo is newer so I did installed AHCI driver this time.
  • Previously I was installing display driver built for win8.1 but now I installed win8 driver.
  • I found new version of utility “Lenovo Settings Dependency Package” released 8 Apr, I downloaded and installed it.
  • There is no separate link to download BIOS at Lenovo site.
  • I’m NOT overclocking.

Yesterday I download malwarebytes antimalware (1.5). I didn’t update its database. Started quick and full scan. Quick scan found two dlls and four registry keys as infected. Full scan found four files as infected in “c:\Windows\WinSxS\” folder. I ignored them at the moment. Today I updated its database, removed all entries from ‘ignore list’ and scanned again but this time it found no infection. I download latest version (2.0), updated its database, and started its threat, hyper, and full system scan and it found no infected file.

I executed “sfc /verifyonly” command after antimalware and it found no problem

I also have windows defender installed on my system.

Driver/Diagnostic tools download site: Drivers and software - Lenovo B590
For diagnostic tools select “Windows 8” from operating system drop down.

As of now system is working ok. Btw I have not played any game on it after installing the fresh copy of windows.

Diagnostic tool and antimalware results are attached.

Thanks for the link to the Lenovo tests - it looks interesting. One thing I did notice that the hard drive test was a "quick" test. I find that quick tests aren't 100% accurate and always suggest that you run the long/extended/thorough test from the manufacturer of the hard drive (if there's no manufacturer test - then use Seagate Seatools).

I tend to think that the issues that you found in MalwareBytes 1.5 were false positives (and it's taking no action on these tends to support that theory). MalwareBytes 2 seems to have taken care of that in the reporting.

Only 7 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 56 - 60 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Use the Lenovo BIOS Update utility to see if there are any updates available. I tried it on my system (mistakenly installing the Win7 version first) and it appears to go out and check for an update. Now I've just gotta figure out how to get it off my system (I failed to follow my own advice and didn't set a Restore Point!).

Let's leave the tvtvcamd.sys driver alone for now. It seems that Lenovo has done some work in it recently, so I'm less concerned about it's age now.

The next time that you reinstall Windows, I'd suggest that you enable UEFI and Secure Boot.
No need to do it now, but it'll offer extra protection and stability later on.

Be sure that System Restore is enabled, and make frequent System Restore points until you're sure that the problem is gone.
Keep track of any changes that you make, and then try to play games (to see if you can force further BSOD's).

Windows update KB2919355 contains all of the previous updates, I used windows updates and it found no new update.

There is an ‘Intel management engine bios extension’ software available at startup. It requires a login and it accepts the default password ‘admin’ and then ask to set a new password. I tried to set a couple of passwords but it gives error “password rejected” and keep asking to set new password. Don’t know what’s the required policy for the password. The two options this utility includes are “Intel ME General Settings” and “Intel Small Business Technology Configuration” that are greyed out.

Laptop also includes a few diagnostic tools available on computer startup. It includes Quick memory test, Quick storage Device test, Recover bad sectors tool, and system information.

I created a report using “Lenovo Solution Center” software to list what hardware/software in the laptop. This software also includes a “Hardware scan” test tool in it.

When I run bios update utility, it first ask to “Update ThinkPad BIOS”, clicking Next says “BIOS image file is older than BIOS ROM. Do you want to continue?” I click No and exit the application.

There is a tool “Intel Management and Security Status” that tells that ‘Intel Management Engine’ status is ‘Unconfigured’ ‘Small Business Technology’ is enabled but not configured.

I didn't know that about the 8.1.1 update (restarting the Windows Update count). I'll have to do some research on it at work.

Thanks for the info on the system, I'll look at it as time allows.

I was not having any blue screen for quite few days but last night PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA error occurred when I was installing Windows 8.1 in vmware workstation 10. Any clue?

There's both Virtual Box and VMWare present in the memory dumps.
The VMWare drivers date from 2012 as do the Virtual Box drivers.
I'd suggest:
- uninstalling one of these VM programs
- updating the other one to the most recent, Win8.1 compatible version

Also:
Please run chkdsk /r /f from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt.
Also, if this is a physical disk (not a virtual one), please run these free hard drive diagnostics: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Is it possible that ram frequency and/or voltage are causing the issues I described in my previous replies. Originally my laptop came with a 2GB ram (1600 MHz, 1.35v). I then upgraded to 4GB (1333 MHz, 1.5v) and laptop started to experience different errors at irregular intervals.

Yes it is possible for the different RAM to cause errors.

Run MemTest86+ and Prime95 tests.
