Windows 8 Consumer Preview randomly freezes

Does anyone else have this issue? It happens at random times and the only way to restart is to hold the power button down and force a hard reset. Is there any fix for this?

Does it happen every time you move your mouse cursor to the edge of the screen?

No it is always at random times, sometimes before I can log in, sometimes after its been sitting idle for a while and sometimes just when i go to click on something.

Hey I was having the same problem with windows 8 CP freezing all the time on me..

I am running it on a laptop nd I am also running the OS on an SSD drive but I do not think this is the issue.

Here is a workaround that worked for me.

    1. Go to the start page and type "advanced system settings
    2. Then performance
    3. Then visual setting
    4. Set the radio button to adjust to best performance.
    5. Reboot.

    Worth a try,

    Oh, about SDD drives!

    I discovered a problem.
SSD are not supposed to be set for de fragmentation aint it?

After looking at that area I see it shows my main drive (SSD) has be selected to be optimized this may explain why the freezing does not take place right after a fresh install of the system.
    I discovered this setting via orb/charm bar/control panel/administrative settings/defragmentation.

If it turns out if your SSD's partition isn't aligned correctly it will under-perform and could be the cause for the freezes..
If it indeed has defragmented the ssd then a complete reinstall of the OS may be in order or realigning of your SSD's partition.

Hope this helps solving your problem.

I dont want to sound dumb or accidentally make anyone else sound dumb, however, after reading this ^^^ I looked into it because I had "defragmendted" my hard drive (SSD) right after the first install of windows 8 which ran without trouble till I started messing with drivers. Once I figured out all the drivers I returned the tablet to factory state and did another clean install of windows 8, installed the drivers which I found worked and came up with the same odd little problem as the OP.

After reading that SSDs are not to be defragmented, I thought well poop that is probably what happened however at the same time realized that on the original smooth running install I had "defragmented" the hard drive. So, I checked. Turned out I had not "defragmented" the hard drive yet on my current install of Win 8 CP. I started reading and noticed that Win 8 seems to recognize that there is an SSD installed and does not "defragment" the hard drive but instead "optimizes" it. I went ahead and did so and immediately I have noticed a tremendous improvement! I opened all the office programs(ppt, onenote, word, excel, outlook, etc), firefox, IE and then opened a bunch of the new apps to load the system and see if it would pause/glitch/freeze what have you and I found it ran that whole mess at full speed without even a hiccup! If you cant tell I am ecstatic about these findings. So, contrary to what is stated above, I suggest to "optimize" your SSD if you have not done so and have this pause/glitch/freezing problem described here. If you dont know how, it is just simply the disk defragmenter in the system section of the control panel. Again with reference to the above stated, before just clicking go, I would suggest ensuring that your computer is in fact optimizing an SSD and not defragmenting it. It should say specifically "optimize"

Hope this helps some people. Please I also welcome corrections as I am still learning with this stuff.

My computer freezed for about 1 minute every time i had the mouse cursor on the top left corner. But after doing the performance trick my computer did not freeze. And as OP said his computer was freezing, so does mine from time to time. Hope this fixes it!

I am having the same crashing problem. (dual booting with Windows 7)
However, when I select "Optimize" for my SSD Windows 8 says "Optimization not available".

Anyone know why that is occurring?

    Hi and welcome.

Please run the tool found in the top thread of this subforum, then attach the zip it makes here.

If this is a wired desktop machine, you would do very well by setting a static ip address for your network adapter.
