Running multiple instances of VMware causes BSOD

Hi, I'm currently using my desktop computer as an host for about 7 VMware machines running at the same time.

I guess specs are included in the dump, but I'll put them here:
CPU: i7 2600k
SSD: samsung evo 840 120gb
RAM: 2x 4gb DDR3 1600mhz
GPU: nVidia 570 GTX

Currently under windows 8.1 final release build, with every last Windows updates available. (fresh install since yesterday)

After maybe 2 hours of somewhat intensive tasks, my computer restart itself saying : "Your PC ran into a problem" in the blue ribbon UI. If anyone can help me resolve the issue, I'm greatly opened to any fix; even if downgrading the OS is the solution.

Thanks guys, hope I can get rid of theses errors ASAP! If you need any more information, don't hesitate to ask me.
- Shinnyx

This can cause issues with systems - to include BSOD's. I'd strongly suggest running fewer applications until you are able to add more RAM (if the system is capable of handling it).

This device doesn't have drivers installed:
Nexus 5 USB\VID_18D1&PID_4EE6&MI_01\7&F6AE341&0&0001 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Please either physically remove the device from the system, or install the latest, Win8.1 compatible drivers for it.

The oldest driver on your system is HECIx64.sys - which dates from 2010. This driver is a part of the Intel Management Engine program and must be updated to the latest, Win8.1 compatible version. Here's an older canned speech that I have about this:

Please check the list of drivers below for any that date prior to the release of Win8.1 (October of 2013).
Please verify that each of these drivers is compatible with Win8.1
If uncertain, please download the latest, Win8.1 compatible version of each one and install it

Please note that your VMWare installation is one of those that dates from before the release of Win8.1

If the BSOD's continue, please post back and we'll try some other steps.

If you are running 7 concurrent machines, you might want to consider moving to 16GB of RAM at a minimum. 8GB of RAM, doesn't provide much space for the host OS and 7 different other VM's.

Windows and Linux enthusiast. Logitech G35 Headset.
Thanks to both of you.

I'm already considering upgrading my RAM to 16gb, since I have 2 slots left for a dual channel kit.
I've tried running 6 machines and I got a BSOD even with that. I was on windows 8 last week and I the PC could handle 6 VMs for 10 hours straight. Each machine have 756mb of RAM assigned to it, running tiny7 (stripped down version of windows 7 running minimal service/process for minimal RAM usage). Task manager on my main host tells me that about 90% of my RAM is filled when everything is running.

Is there any other 'software fix' I can try before going on hardware parts? I've used uniBlue driver software and I've updated 20 of my current drivers which were considered 'ancient'. Everything is up to date now (at least, that's what UniBlue driver is telling me)

I will provide a new DUMP, since I got other BSOD with the drivers installed. Maybe it can help furthermore?
If you guys got any other suggestions, Imma try them! Really appreciate the help, thanks!

Other informations:

I've ran a memory test for my RAM. No error found. Also did a S.M.A.R.T check on my SSD with samsung program, nothing wrong there, too.

I downloaded bluescreenview and checked the DUMP files. It looks like it's related to ntoskrnl.exe (address ntoskrnl.exe+14dca0)

Every last crashes are related to that "driver". Do you have any leads, guys?

If you watch a "normal" Windows installation's memory usage, you'll see that:
1) Usage rarely stays above a couple of %
2) When usage increases to around 20% (or more), the system starts to have problems
3) These problems are less evident if you have more RAM

The ability of the system to handle 7 VM's together at one time is possible, but Windows systems are "dynamic" - with many different things going on at different times. The things that I've pointed out are the most common reasons for system errors under these sort of conditions.

The crashes are STOP 0x124 errors - they are:
These error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

These errors are errors sent by the CPU to Windows. As such, the faulting module (ntoskrnl.exe) isn't likely to be significant for troubleshooting purposes in this type of error. Please note that we haven't even started with hardware diagnostics yet (I suggest these free tests: Hardware Diagnostics )

Additionally, ntoskrnl.exe is the kernel (core) of the operating system. As such, if it was giving problems you would be having many more problems other than the occasional BSOD. Typically, when this component is blamed, it means that another driver has usually violated the memory space that's "owned" by ntoskrnl.exe

You've had 4 memory dumps since the last upload - all of which were STOP 0x124 errors. I've run an analysis on all of them with these results:

Continue the search for Win8.1 compatible drivers for the Intel Management Engine. You have updated to the 2011 version - but Win8.1 came out in October of 2013. I don't know if the drivers that you installed were certified as Win8.1 compatible or not - that's why I ask you to continue searching for Win8.1 compatible drivers.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hey John, thank you again for your time! I wish I could buy you a beer, seriously. Do you have a paypal donation account? I can't believe you're troubleshooting everyone like that, for free!

I went on my motherboard manufacturer website and downloaded MEI (and every other drivers available)
Here is where I've downloaded them: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download Sabertooth P67

I've also updated my BIOS, which had a 2 years old version.
I've went into my advanced settings in the BIOS and did an optimized performance restore.. (which is considered "default"). I've seen that my RAM had been overclocked by the last owner of the computer. (my RAM now state 1033mhz, and I remember it was 1600mhz before I hit that button). So maybe some other components were overclocked, I don't know... But now everything is stock.
I also did a Prime95 overnight test. Cooling was excellent (liquid cooled) and no error in 8h30 of testing.

I've ran 5 VMware sessions this morning, with driver verifier settings activated (followed your link & tutorial). It took about 5 minutes and it crashed! That's even faster than usual! I can't believe every updates that I did at this time make the problem worse :( It's driving me nuts... VMware is clearly what makes the system get the BSOD! I had 1gb of RAM left with 5 machines and my host running. That should be enough, no? I'll try even fewer machines today to see if the problem still persist.

Here's my last DUMP, with driver verifier activated in the last crash.

The dumpfiles consists of 2 bugcheck
Stop 0x124 The WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR This bug check indicates that a fatal hardware error has occurred
stop 0x101"CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT An expected clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor in an
MP system within the allocated interval. This indicates that the specified
processor is hung and not processing interrupts."

The dumpfiles from 15 -3-2014 give a pattern
time 3.04 stop 0x124 error
time 4.00 stop 0x101 error
time 4.52 stop 0x124 error
time 5.17 stop 0x101 error
time 5.40 stop 0x124 error

time 15.30 stop 0x124 error with Driver Verifier

Analyzing the stop 0x124 with errrec gives Error : Internal timer (Proc 1 Bank 3) Proc 1 = secondary processor

Most of the time the causes in both bugcheck are drivers or bios as noticed by our BSODspecialist Usasma but sometimes it is hardware faillure like a faulty processor.
To hopefully exclude hardware faillure .Ensure your temperatures of your processor are within standard and nothing's overheating.
You can use a program such as Speccy if you'd like to monitor temps - Speccy - System Information - Free Download.

Hey lifetec, thanks for your feedback.

As I said, I've ran Prime95 overnight (about 8 hours, 30minutes) and the cooling was great. Nothing alarming there. I checked the temperature with the Asus AI Suite II!

The CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT is occurring since I upgraded my BIOS and put the default optimization settings... Looks like it was running better with the overclocked components! That's so strange... I wasn't even getting CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT 2 days ago! Now when I'm opening VMware and launching some machines, sometime it crashes right away (machines don't even have the time to boot windows, it freezes and crash the host! It got even worse!)

You mentioned the Asus AI Suite II.
According to a BSOD speciallist of answersmicrosoft, com
It is of course of the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124) bugcheck.

This bug check indicates that a fatal hardware error has occurred. This bug check uses the error data that is provided by the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA).

Note that this is a hardware only bugcheck, most of the time. The only software that can generally cause this bugcheck are OS to BIOS utilities or software such as Asus' AI Suite that provide a direct bridge from the OS to BIOS to perform on the fly adjustments, monitor voltages and BIOS settings, etc.

4.
As I said above, the only usual software conflict that can usually cause *124 bugchecks are OS to BIOS utilities from manufacturer's like Asus' AI Suite. If you have something like this software-wise, remove it ASAP.

Shinnyx - thanks for the kind words! I decline all donations on principle - I do this for the love of the work and the satisfaction of helping others.

While I think it is true that lower level utilities can cause STOP 0x124 issues, I have found that other things (such as Razer drivers) can also cause this. So, I disagree with the statement that was made by the analyst in your quote.

When the STOP 0x124 errors first debuted in Vista, I argued with people who claimed that it was a purely hardware error - and that software/drivers could not cause it. Although the argument has almost died out - there are still a few diehards out there who refuse to acknowledge this possibility.

EDIT: To use the AISuite utility as an example....

A while back there was an issue with ASACPI.sys and it's being updated at Windows Update (Win7 and early Win8)
On some systems it wasn't possible to update ASACPI.sys with a standalone installer - but the Asus AISuite did this nicely (it also included other drivers that were needed for proper functioning of the system).

We found that, if this driver wasn't updated, it would cause BSOD's

After a bit of research, we found that:
1) Windows Update contained an older version (dating from 2005) that would cause this problem.
2) The 2005 version was installed on systems when you first connected to Windows Update
3) Updating the driver was essential to stop these BSOD's

As stated previously, the driver was included in the AISuite, so it was used to install this driver.
From what I've seen (although I haven't done a study of this), if you uninstall the AI Suite - you uninstall that driver. That opens you up to having Windows Update install the older one.

FYI - this problem no longer exists as Asus has uploaded a more recent copy to the Microsoft servers.

Here's a bref review:

- I did a clean install of windows 7.
- Every windows update has been done.
- Installed each drivers for my motherboard from ASUS website.
- Did not install RAZER drivers, this time.
- No more CLOCK_WATCHDOG error, only recurrent STOP x124.
- The BSOD ONLY occurs when a virtual machine is running. (even only 4 of them, with plenty of ram available causes a BSOD)
- BIOS has been updated to the lastest version.
- Every components has been turned to default voltage, no more overclock.
- Prime95 ran for 8.5 hour, no error. (It takes only 10-15min when a VM is running and BSOD appears)
- Enabling CPU Intel Virtualization Technology in BIOS causes an instant BSOD when I open ONE machine. (Have to keep it disabled to be able to power on a machine.. Very strange)

The issue seems to be related to virtualization, at least that's what causes the BSOD. I cannot find ANY information or similar problem across the web... Any ideas? If you need more dump I have plenty of them.

EDIT: I've found that thread,
windows - Host system resets (crashes) when using VMWare or VirtualBox and 64-bit guest systems - Super User

which is VERY similar to my issue... One of the answer proposed to install a Linux distribution to see if the problem persist... To exclude hardware malfunctions. I may try it tomorrow if you guys run out of ideas for windows.

I'm late for work, but believe that the key to this is probably related to:
- Prime95 ran for 8.5 hour, no error. (It takes only 10-15min when a VM is running and BSOD appears)
- Enabling CPU Intel Virtualization Technology in BIOS causes an instant BSOD when I open ONE machine. (Have to keep it disabled to be able to power on a machine.. Very strange)

Note that Prime95 primarily tests 3 things:
- RAM
- CPU cache
- memory controller (on CPU w/i7's)

From this, I'd suspect the CPU.
Can you run CPU stress tests please?
Here's a link to some: Hardware Diagnostics - CPU Stress Tests

Also, just in case, please run memory tests also: Memory Diagnostics

No way, I've bought it used from a guy a year ago... He didn't have any receipt or box at that time, since his friend had build the entire system for him..

I've run memtest86+ : 7 passes, no error
intelburntest : 10 passes at high CPU load...

Omg, what's wrong? Could it be the motherboard? There is no way to test that I suppose...

Yes, the motherboard is suspect.
Unfortunately, there's no comprehensive tests for motherboards.
There are tests like Eurosoft's PC-Check and QA-Win32 - but they're limited in nature and have many false results.

The only sure-fire test is to replace the mobo.
That's a real PITA and there's no guarantee that it's going to work.

I had a bad mobo back w/Win7 and it took me a year to finally break down and replace it.

Ensure that you've tried all of the hardware diagnostics here: Hardware Diagnostics
Then, run through this procedure to help rule out other hardware problems: Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting

Should you decide to go with a new mobo, try to purchase it from a place that accepts returns. That way you'll be able to recover some of your money if it turns out that the mobo isn't to blame.

Just a little update, it is not "solved" but I clearly think my GPU is the problem. I ran a stress test (afterburn MSI benchmark) on it, 10min later my screen shut down followed by my whole computer... On reboot I had a bluescreen report (it wasn't the STOP 0x124 error this time, but it did fail on a GPU stress test...) So I firmly assume my GPU is the problem!

Really weird, I guess I have to replace it.. I was monitoring the temp during the test.. it didn't go any further than 72 celcius! (according to nvidia, 97 is the upper limit) So I'm far behind that point.. But still, got the bluescreen during the testing (my GPU was also doing a strange noise when it was stressed... I guess it's defect!)

Please zip up and upload the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump (you may have to copy it to your Desktop in order to zip it up).

There are several tests that will help tell you if it's the GPU or not. There's 2 sets of free video tests on this page of mine: Hardware Diagnostics

But often the only true test is to replace the card. If you don't have a spare card that you can test with, you can purchase a card from a place that will let you return it if it's not needed.

I will upload the dump tonight, I will also try to put the card in the other slot of the motherboard. (Who knows, maybe the port is defect and the card is still good.. worth a try)

I will run the 2 other test you suggested me!

EDIT:
Attached the dumps, the 4 last one are related to GPU stress test.
Running the furmark test did crash the whole computer with error code 116. (same error that the MSI burn test gave me)
At 1080p, the test could not run for more than 5min without crashing. I tried to run a less intensive test in windowed mode, no crash after 15min and the temp was stable at 71 Celsius. (it's not a overheating issue)
