BSOD waking from sleep & startup hanging

Hey folks, been having some issues and have attached the SF diagnostic zip.

My system is Windows 8.1, Samsung notebook, i7, 8gb RAM and 1tb hard-drive.

I updated the Intel Rapid Storage Driver but alas it is not helping the situation of BSOD on waking up from sleep. Basically, the screen/desktop is visible and I can move the cursor and try to double click on programs, before getting the BSOD (collecting errors and restarting) screen.

I always do 'full shutdowns' /have disabled fast startup. Have also disabled some startup apps such as google updater and a couple others but the laptop is still taking around 3 minutes to boot with no HDD light activity for a couple of minutes (is this normal when fast startup is disabled???). Shut downs /entering sleep mode are swift.

On another note, Synaptics driver isn't installing and I was told that would help (for some reason) but that may not be relevant.

I look forward to receiving some help, thank you!

STOP 0x117's and lot's of Live Kernel Events in the WER section of MSINFO32

For the STOP 0x117's, try this: Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117 - Sysnative Forums

For the Live Kernel Events, If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

More to follow after I get home (just finished having the truck worked on).......

The memory dumps blame the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver.
Where did you get the update that you used? Please provide a link to it.

What error message do you get when trying to install the Synaptics driver?

Also update (these are just hunches on my part):
- Intel Management Engine
- BlueTooth drivers
- uninstall AVG and try another antivirus temporarily.

Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry Usasma, I attached an old zip file. So sorry to make you go through that, I have attached the one form last night now. AVG got uninstalled a while back.

this is the intel link https://downloadcenter.intel.com/co...rivers&OSFullname=Windows+8.1*&ProductID=2101

I have attached an image for the synaptics failure: it doesn't actually let you click any further for details.

thank you very much!

The driver that you linked to dated from 2013, the driver in the memory dump dates from 2012.
The link that you gave points to the floppy install - not the Windows install.

How did you install the driver? If you just copied it into the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder it probably didn't work.

You'll need to download the SetupRST.exe file from this page: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...ame=Windows+8.1*&ProductID=2101&DwnldID=23496

The info you provided is the same as the previous one. I got the info on AVG through the dump files - not the other reports.
The last memory dump was from 4 March - have you had more since then?
If so, then the system isn't capturing them.
If you're only having crashes/restarts (without the BSOD), then that'd explain the Live Kernel Events.

But, we've seen the Live Kernel Events - so let's work on them first.
Once we get some answers from that, then we'll move on to other things.

Thanks Usasma, I thought I'd done it from setup but now I'm second guessing myself. I've just downloaded the Setup file (did already have one in downloads) but I installed through setup just now - Basically, it said it was updating/repairing files, went into a 'repair' graph and then my system restarted (took 120 seconds to boot). I did a sleep test and it woke up fine once. But then did it again and it crashed on waking up from sleep. I've had some screens in the last week where it has said 'driver power state failure.. gathering info...' but the standard drill is just no activity (except for moving cursor) and i have to hard power off.

Please advise and I will carry out your instructions

Look in C:\Windows\Minidump and see if there's anything dated later than 04 March.
Zip up the contents and upload it with your next post

Let's also have a look at the Admin event log:
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Hey Usasma, got your email in the morning on the phone, thank you. Had a chance at work in the afternoon to boot my laptop and lo and behold, went into boot loops for an hour (error starting windows -> restart). Would try to detect and fix errors/ i'd every few boot attempts use advance settings to fix start settings but no luck. More failed boots. Did a system restore to 24 hours before (windows update) which also did not work. Then randomly it got through to desktop. I shutdown and tried boot again... no luck, more boot cycles then another 30 minuets later made it to desktop and I have just shut it down for now.

I am away for work over weekend but hopefully will get some time to try to get to desktop again to do all the things you suggested. With this new information, is there anything else specific you would like me to do?

Many thanks Usasma

At work we start all repairs with a set of diagnostics. Often they find problems that weren't even expected. It's a waste of time to try to fix software on a system that has hardware problems.
Please try these free diagnostics for starters: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Also, please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Hey Usasma, had a look at the hardware diagnostics and I really am out of my comfort zone there in regards to what to do. I can pass my laptop to outsourced IT company at work on Friday who said they will run harddrive/motherboard etc diagnostics throughout a day and let me know results.

Thing is.. the Friday boot loop was just after updates. And just now I experienced another boot loop (albeith just a couple boot attempts to was fixed quite easily without me doing anything), directly after the system did some Windows updates.

I did check as you advised to see if all updates are good and that does appear to be the case.

Based on what you said...
I checked to see if there were any more memory dumps since March 4th and there haven't been. I have attached admin zip based on event viewer. I had a couple of boot crashes today, but the main events were around 16.00 on the 14/02/2014. Also, the day when I had boot cycles for hours and hours was 20/02/2014. Surprisingly, event viewer showed that this morning at 9.35 the laptop had the critical event of booting when not being shut down properly. But I am sure that it shut down fine the last time I did :S

This is so much stress man, I really hope you see a revelation in the files

Ive gone back through this thread and I couldnt adequately deal with the STOP 0X117 issue. Is that still an issue? About to download the temp utility now too

Thanks so much Usasma

Let the IT folks run the diags for you.
We start our analysis by trying to figure out if the problem is related to:
- 3rd party driver problems
- hardware problems
- Windows driver problems

Event Viewer logs can get tricky at times.
For example the Critical Event with Event ID 41 is simply Windows saying "I don't know why I was shut down, but it wasn't expected"
This can be due to a BSOD, overheating, or you holding the power button down to shut the system off (among other things).

Errors stop around 11am on 14 Feb and don't start up again until 17 Feb
Did you leave the system off for that period?

Lot's of printer driver problems on 20 Feb
Check to see if there's an update available for your BIOS (lot's of Kernel-Processor-Power errors)
Disk errors at 2:07 pm on 20 Feb (?maybe significant, maybe not?)

NTFS errors throughout the log - suggest CHKDSK /F /R from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt
Side-By-Side errors throughout the log - fixing these is a bit outside of my experience.
I'd suggest (in this order):
- SFC.EXE /SCANNOW (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt)
- DISM commands to assess/repair errors
- Refresh of the OS

Here's the DISM stuff:
Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after each one:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

If the problem is fixable, you can use this command to repair it (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after typing it:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

From this article: Repair a Windows Image

You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.

Hey Usasma, thanks for the reply.

I did run sfc /scannow (without the exe though?) last night and it took two scans for it to show clean. The system has been pretty stable since - it does wake up from sleep fine (the only thing is I cant do stuff like click on an icon and presst Alt 4 and control to bring up power options... seems insignificant but maybe not)

I'll do another CHK DSK, as I haven't done one since the 20th of Feb. And yes, between the 14th and 17th my laptop was off (Valentines weekend ha ha)

I'll get the hardware checked out and report back to you. Thing is... apart from occasional weird BYODs (had two boot loops for some reason yday), the shut down has been just fine and boot times have sort of stablilized to 150 seconds or so (fast startup is disabled). A bios update took place about 3-4 weeks ago. Once the system is running it runs absolutely fine (although fan seems a little loud). An OS refresh is an absolute last resort because of how much software I have running and just grabbing all those things would be a week's work in itself for me.

Does the health of the laptop over the last week or so seem relatively better though?

Many thanks

UPDATE: Hey Usasma, ran the DISM and Scannow etc, everything came clean.

I updated a bluetooth driver, after that when i put laptop to sleep, it wouldnt power off anything and i had to do a hard poweroff. Then everything was fine again.

Getting NTFS error everytime i boot - wonder how much of a issue this is

Will be doing hardware checks today... thank you in the meantime!

A refresh leaves your data and regular programs intact.
It does lose some of the apps - but AFAIK the system will list which apps are removed so it's fairly easy to replace them.

Thank you Usasma, theres hundreds of music programs downloaded from sites (Licensed) or from disc so still weary of that route - Also if the issue is driver related, is it likely it comes back again? In your experience, how much of an issue is the NTFS at boot really? I read that it could be false positive/ it is the same code over and over again.

Today i'll be getting a guy at work to use his sotware cds to check harddrive, memory etc + ive had the laptop a year and havent cleaned out the fan yet so i think i'll get on that too

NTFS is the file system on your hard drive - so everything that is on the hard drive has to pass through NTFS.sys before it's stored/written/read/etc. This includes programs and data.

It depends on what's causing the NTFS errors as to what you'll have to do.
1) the hard drive could be failing - in that case you'll have to replace the hard drive
2) the system could be corrupted in some way - which would cause recurring NTFS errors - chkdsk /f /r may fix that, but if it's recurring - they may just return.
3) the NTFS file system could be corrupted (just once) - chkdsk /f /r should fix that

Thanks Usasma you have been very helpful! I ran the chkdsk before and on boot it flew to 100% in about two seconds so I'm guessing not much happened! If it's a recurring file error I can live with that... If it's a failing hard-drive I'll hopefully know by the end of today. I have Macrium Images and Clones saved anyway so I'm good in that sense. It really is just this one thing now (which causes the hang at start with HDD light not flashing on, which is worrying!)

UPDATE ii: Ran chkdsk /f /r again and it lasted about three hours. Since then boot time has been super fast but the NTFS error still shows in event viewer every boot (quick start disabled ofcourse as hibernate just kills power on attempted boot after shutdown)

Also, I found that I cannot optimize the drive (35% fragmented) I am getting the NTFS error on . Hardware check got postponed to tomorrow as I had to work from home on some other deadline

[sorry for multiple messages!] The error I get is: 'The default transaction resource manager on volume \\?\Volume{46259fbc-070d-4d22-b329-aebee67c11a8} encountered a non-retryable error and could not start. The data contains the error code.'

And I just found this: https://secure.efoldering.com/suppo...-transaction-resource-manager-could-not-start

'These are not actually errors and should be ignored. Configure your RMM tool to ignore the event log entries (e.g. if it contains "The default transaction resource manager on volume" then ignore it). The message is caused when ShadowProtect mounts/unmounts a volume as part of a file-level restore or as part of a VirtualBoot. The messages pertain to read-only volumes representing point-in-time snapshots from the backup sets. There is not actually any problem with the filesystem on the C:\ or the X:\ and you can safely ignore these messages. If the message does actually mention C:\ or X:\ then you should try running chkdsk \R on the C:\ or X:\

So that is linked to why I can't optimize that drive? But based on the image I posted, what IS that anyway?
