BSOD maybe tied to sleep/hibernate, otherwise random.

I've been getting random(ish) BSOD. I first noticed them when installing/updating Star Wars: TOR, but have since had it happen when trying to update other games too. Had few in the past (only owned laptop for roughly 2 months) but seems to be increasing in frequency. Thought they may be tied to when it tries to sleep, but disabled it going to sleep in the power settings and it still BSOD.

Is there any reason that you've turned SecureBoot off?

Is there any reason that you haven't installed Win8.1 yet?
If not, go to the Windows Store (the Store tile in the Start Screen) and install it. It should be the first choice.
If it's not there, download the update from here and install it: Update is available that prepares Windows 8 and Windows RT-based computers for the update to Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 RT
Reboot and the 8.1 Update will be the first thing that you see in the Store.

Only 127 Windows Updates installed. Most Win8 systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

There are a number of Live Kernel Events in the WER section of MSINFO32,
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

Wanted to reply to let you know I'm going to look into those, and thank you!

I hadn't updated to 8.1 initially due to hearing about driver conflicts. The BSODs started I held off until I found out if I should or not yet.

For windows update it shows I have all the updates, but I did have some problems when I was doing the initial updates upon the laptop arriving. My ISP is crap and it hung, or something, during the update process. I was pretty sure it hadn't downloaded all the updates, but the update manager didn't show any. Was afraid that may come back to haunt me.

Onto overclocking and uninstalling stuff I bought the computer from someone else who changed the hard drives and re-installed Windows. So perhaps they did that too? Either way definitely going to remedy that!

Thanks again, and going to get to what you recommended. The only question I'd ask is since it says I don't have some updates installed, and the windows update doesn't seem to show them as available to install/update, should I fix that somehow before updating to 8.1?

EDIT: Having trouble with updating/finding the drivers you recommended. The links take me to a page that kinda describes the driver, but the download link on the page kick to Asus/Lenovo sites. The ATK thing is the Trackpad? Downloading that as it seemed to be what you was referencing. Not sure on the Lenovo one.

Drivers are a tricky thing - so sometime the links aren't as specific as I'd like.
The Lenovo link is safe for the Asus - I still haven't worked out the differences in the naming of this driver.
Just install what you can and make a note of what you can't.
Then we wait and see if the BSOD's are fixed

Don't worry about 8.1 or SecureBoot just yet.
If you decide to reinstall Windows, then you can enable SecureBoot
As for 8.1, it won't hurt to leave it be - but updating to it might help with some of the Windows Update problems (in other words, it's your call).

As for the overclock - i5 and i7 processors have overclocking enabled through an Intel program called TurboBoost.

Have you started the hardware diagnostics? If so, what are the results so far?
Has the temperature monitor shown anything out of the ordinary?

The Admin log shows a lot of different errors. If the hardware diagnostics pass (and the temps are normal), then we'll start in on drivers (the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Manager is the next most likely culprit).

Update:

I ran the memtest and think I may have found a problem. On test7 I got errors. Was hoping to wait until I had removed the one removable memory stick and ran the test again to reply, but seems finding a Torx5 screwdriver is harder than one would think. Ordered one from Amazon that should be here by Thurs/Fri. I'm taking the errors to mean one of the memory sticks is bad, and that I'll need to remove one and run test again to see which it is? I'm hoping like hell that it's not the permanent one on the motherboard.

The temperature seems to be hot to me. Know laptops run hotter, but 110-146 degrees Fahrenheit seems hot.

The harddisk test, at risk of sounding even more dumb, seems to indicate that it needs to run from a CD. The laptop doesn't have one, but was wondering if it could be done on a USB drive like the memtest was.

PS On windows update. I was thinking, is the 160 for 8.1? As in I may not be missing any 8.0 updates and the discrepancy is due to fact I'm still running 8.1. Which when I update to it the number of updates would be closer to the 160 number vs the 121 number it is now.

Edit: Wanted to say I was able to remove the RAM and run the test on the onboard RAM. It passed the test so it seems it was the one stick causing trouble maybe?

I like to see temps in the 50's (Celcius) on Desktop CPU's
On laptops I'm comfortable with them in the 60's (Celcius)
Yours is 146ºF - which is about 63ºC
I suggest a laptop cooling pad if you have any concern about temps at all.

Memory is most likely the problem - so we've gotta wait until you've solved that.

Most of the bootable hard drive tests work off a CD. There are workarounds of different sorts for USB (I use YUMI to boot ISO's) - or you can purchase a USB CD/DVD drive and run from that.

According to the memory dump from March 8, you are running Win8
That should have 160 or so Windows Updates

Win8.1 only has about 40 or 50 Windows Updates.

Each system is different, so the actual number of updates can only be determined by running Windows Update repeatedly in order to see how many there are (I get my numbers from the systeminfo.txt report that you uploaded - which also said that you were running Win8). If you get errors while running Windows Updates, it's a point of concern (post in the Windows Updates forum for assistance with that)

Since you've isolated the bad RAM, run the system for a while without the bad stick. If no BSOD's show up, then you've found your problem.

Finally got the replacement memory for the broken one. Ran memtest on it, and again just with the 2GB on the motherboard, and didn't get errors. Hoping like you suggested that it solves the problem.

I'm uploading another file as I did have one more BSOD. It happened after I'd removed the busted RAM. As I clicked shutdown it went blue-screen on me. I'm hoping that it has to do with the fact the computer was only running on 2GB at that time, and even though minimum required is 2GB it recommends 4GB.

Clarification on the Windows Update: I don't get any errors trying to update. Every now and then I get one and update it, and other than the initial problem when I received it and was updating. I can't fully remember if I did a system restore to an earlier point, or if after a few hours Windows realized I hadn't actually got those updates as I do remember it updating the next day or so. Either way once this is straightened out I'll make the upgrade to 8.1.

Good to know about the temps! I'll be less concerned now about those temps. I was just thinking they was high as I was used to desktops running cooler.

Going to try and give it a good running and will report back any further BSODs or such.

Let's hold off on the anaylsis of the last BSOD.
If the BSOD's return, then we'll run it.

Bluetooth drivers have had lot's of problems in Win8 and 8.1
Please do as lifetec asks, and update it.
Once you update to 8.1, be sure to update it again.

BSOD maybe tied to sleep/hibernate, otherwise random.
