    BSOD (SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED) = ntoskrnl.exe

    Hello EightForums,

    <UPDATE - 2014/02/22 1:05AM>
I was in 'Safe Mode' when I first opened this thread, and upon restarting the laptop, it hit the same Kernel-Power error but with a different "Bug Check String" value in the dmp file while viewing it in BlueScreenView:

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I can upload a second zip file with this latest iteration of this error, but I am not sure what the rules are about having multiple dmp files in a single thread. So I will wait for a response before I do anything else.

    <UPDATE DONE>

I've had this problem more or less recurring for the past several weeks (if not longer) regarding Windows 8.1 and the booting error "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you." This mainly occurs after the laptop is turned on and it attempts to load Windows 8.1 (irrespective of the previous method of how the laptop was shutdown).

I attempted to look at the dmp files and the event logs Windows generated around the time of error and the common issue I see is the following:

    Event Viewer
    Source: Kernel-Power
Event ID: 41, Task Category (63)
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

    BlueScreenView

    Bug Check String: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
    Caused By Driver: ntoskrnl.exe

I tried some of the temporary fixes like changing the power options and the "Write Debugging Information" in Startup and Recovery to "Small memory dump (256kb)".

However, these were temporary as it appears that the BSOD affects the laptop on random days, with no noticeable pattern in behaviour. To the best of my knowledge, I've updated the drivers to their most recent versions since that was cited as a possibility. I also ran 'Windows Memory Diagnostic' once; unfortunately I was not entirely present while it was running and upon returning to my laptop (I did see it go to Stage 2 of 2), the laptop restarted and hit the "SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED - ntoskrnl.exe" issue again, which led me to open this thread.

I would appreciate it if someone could take a look at this since it appears that each solution is unique, despite the problem being all too common.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

Latest crash dump is from early last month.

    Update Realtek card reader driver:

    RtsP2Stor RtsP2Stor.sys Tue Jul 03 02:00:43 2012

    Uninstall SuperAntiSpyware.

If there is update to Lenovo HDD shock drivers, install:

    ApsHM64 ApsHM64.sys Fri Aug 10 22:24:57 2012 (5025C279)
    Apsx64 Apsx64.sys Sat Jul 21 03:30:07 2012 (500A5A7F)

Uninstall VClone.sys (software that installed it) and replace with PowerISO.

    Enjoy.

Thanks for the reply. I will make the changes you requested and reply to the thread if there are any improvements.

That's odd that the latest crash dump is from last month, is it possible that Windows did not collect any new dump files for the subsequent issues I've hit in this month? In the zip file I uploaded, there are "Crash Dump Files" from February 21 and 22, 2014; are those the correct files or do they refer to something else that isn't useful for this particular problem?

There will not only be improvements. It will be perfect, so as above, enjoy.

(My Winrar was not in date order. My bad. There are crash dumps from today.)

Alright that sounds great. Just another question; should I revert back to the default settings for the things I changed while attempting to "fix" this using other online resources?

I tried some of the temporary fixes like changing the power options and the "Write Debugging Information" in Startup and Recovery to "Small memory dump (256kb)".

Set power options exactly how you wish them to be. Small memory dump is fine.

Is the Kernel-Power issue (ntoskrnl.exe) the same as the initial solution provided for the dump cited from last month, or are these two separate issues?

I continue to hit the Kernel-Power issue with a variety of Bug Check Strings (the new one is BAD_POOL_CALLER). However, I can return the laptop to a working state by cancelling the prompt of restoring the computer to a previous state. Should I update the thread with this new crash dump or is the one already included sufficient since the overall problem is the same?

If any new crashes happen (unlikely) after you have completed all advice, then sure, post newest one.

I continue to hit this issue now (so far 3 for 3 when starting up or restarting the laptop). I made all the changes that were suggested:

    1) Installed the Card Reader
    2) Uninstalled SuperAntiSpyware and Virtual Clone Drive (VClone.sys)
    3) I could not find anything specific for the HDD Shock Driver, only installed the Active Protection System from Lenovo

Like before, the laptop can return to a working state after cancelling any attempts at automatically repairing the problem (may take a couple of tries though).

I attached a more recent zip directory containing the latest files (tmuser_20140223).
