Solved Computer freezing, and black screens of death

Not sure what is going on right now. My computer was fine this morning before I left for work. My wife said it was working fine this morning, and then she left it for a while and when it came back, she was getting blank screens.

When I took a look, it was blank. I did a hard shutdown and after the welcome screen, got a black screen of death. After several reboots, it finally got to the tile screen, but froze there.

So, right now, I'm operating out of safe mode where things seem more normal. Anyway, here are the logs.

Thanks in advance.

Still trying to fight through this. Two questions. Is this the same audio driver I was trying to install before? Right now, just trying to install is hanging the system.

Second, do I need the Rapid Start app. I think that's part of the problem. After trying to wake up, I get a blank screen. For that matter, do I need the Rapid storage app?

Clarification: How do I update Rt630x64 Rt630x64.sys? You wanted me to download from the Windows 8 portion of this page, is that correct? --> Realtek

One other thing, should it be possible to install this from safe mode or from diagnostic mode? I'm still wondering why both modes hang when I try.

For that matter, I noticed the event logs were blank in the logs that I sent. Was this a result from running the SF app in diagnostic mode?

Still can't get things to work completely

I've spent the last several days trying to get the computer to work. Got rid of the Fast USB program as asked. For whatever reason, I still can't get the update for the network drivers to install. It keeps crashing.

I did a chkdsk repair which seems to have made things a bit better, enough so that I can actually, at least with some services and startups off, run the debugging program in regular mode and get the full logs out. If you have any insight as to anything else I can do, I'd appreciate it.

Update: I just tried running all services and startup apps, and everything is now working. It seems chkdsk did the trick. I then tried to install the driver for the network, and it finally worked, so that's updated.

There are just a few things unusual. A couple of software seem to have gotten corrupted in this whole process, so I'll have to reinstall so that's no big deal. The only majorly weird thing is that when I try to uninstall or repair Rapid storage earlier, I get an error message that says there's a fatal error in doing so. Not sure what to do about that, but so long as it causes no problems, I guess I'll let it go for now.

I have also uninstalled Rapid Start which seems to have started the whole disaster.

Questions and update

Two questions and an update.

1. So far as I know, I've updated all the drivers that were listed on the two threads I started. Can you double check this is the case?

2. I have searched the ASRock website for an HDD diagnostic program. I can't find one. Is there one you would recommend?

Update:

1. In the end, I couldn't even get into safe mode. There was also something wrong with the Rapid Storage installation that made it impossible to update or get rid of, and whether that was part of the problem, I don't know. I can't remember whether I tried at that point to reset or refresh Windows, but at any rate, I ended up trying to reinstall completely, but despite low level formats of the hard drive, kept getting errors in installation. In the end, I did a full format, after which everything installed fine. I have now, as I mentioned before, think I've installed all the updates.

2. I do want to check on the hard drive if possible. Chkdsk doesn't find any problems, but the problems just trying to install Windows has me concerned.

3. I have for the time being completely shut down sleep mode on this computer. It seems like every time it goes to sleep, I have a problem shortly thereafter with crashes, disk errors, etc. I'm going to see if this stops with the option turned off.

Every time I look at the machine, there is something new of concern that did not exist previously. I understand completely (do not get me wrong) that people enjoy putting all sorts of things, but what I can suggest is to allow me to dictate the complete precise state of the machine.

What this would mean is not installing a single thing that I do not say, and removing everything that I say.

I would like to go this route so when the machine achieves perfect stability, you can then make a system image with some backup software that you can restore from if and when things go south. Then you can attempt to put anything you'd like and have control back of the machine and all that good stuff.

So for now, uninstall Spamfighter software.

If there is no personal preference reason against Windows 8.1, then upgrade the machine to Windows 8.1.

Please keep me updated with status some time after doing these things.

I'll get rid of Spamfighter. I actually did have Windows 8.1 before the first crash happened, but what I found was that after the crash, I couldn't reset or refresh because I didn't have boot media for it, which is why I really didn't want to go back to 8.1 (plus the fact that after two months of having Windows 8.1, I couldn't see any real advantage to 8.1 over 8.0). If 8.1 is more stable, and there's a way to make boot media for the upgrade, I'll do it. Any idea on how to do that?

Also, any ideas on a hard disk diagnostic tool?

Update: Spent most of the day working on the computer. I think I finally have all 100+ updates loaded. Along the way, I had some hard drive errors that had to be repaired by Windows 8. They look to be fine now. I also had to use the DISM command to fix Windows update because there were a few updates that weren't working. The computer at times had problems loading up when restarting as I'd get a black screen between 2 and a half to 6 and a half minutes before finally getting to the lock screen. However, everything seems to be normal at this point.

One note. I'd noticed that on the last install I had, I had a Windows (0) folder, a Users (0) folder, and I believe a Program data (0) and a Program File (0) folder, along with the regular Windows, Users, etc folders. I was kind of wondering if it had to do with Windows update, but after all the updates this time, I don't have them, so I don't know what they are or what effect if any they had on the system.

Long boot up times on restarts

Ok, so here's what I'm noticing.

For the most part, the system has been fine. The only abnormality I'm seeing is that on restarts, it's taking abnormally long to boot up. Namely, the time between the opening windows screen and the lock screen. Usually, it takes 2-3 minutes, the last time it took over 7. Once it starts, though, everything seems fine.

If I just shut down, and then start the computer, then everything starts normally. Why, I don't know, but I'm including the files to see if you can find anything.

Two more things, in my BIOS, there's an option for fast boots. It's disabled for now, but is it better to turn it on or keep it off.

Finally, I haven't loaded up the Intel Rapid start utility and driver. Is it recommended that I put it in? Windows kept insisting that I upload Smart Connect because my chipset was "missing a driver" (I didn't install it), but mentioned nothing about Rapid Start. I'm assuming I don't need it, since I'm not using sleep mode, but what do you think?

More restart and booting problems

Had a very bizarre last 18 hours or so and am posting the logs. I think there was actually a minidump this time.

I was trying to figure out what was wrong with the restart. It was taking up to 7 minutes to restart. I tried taking out my USB drives, and it actually seemed to speed things up a bit. Then, this morning when I tried to shut down, it took about ten minutes to do so.

For much of this evening, regular shutdown took anywhere between 5-10 minutes, and in once case didn't shut down at all.

A couple of times on trying a reboot, Windows froze at the opening screen, and twice shut down the computer completely. Once I even got a message that Windows "had problems with startup and has sent a message to Microsoft."

At any rate, for some reason, things have returned to "normal"(meaning regular shutdowns and reboots work properly, with restarts still being a problem). Why, I don't know. One thing I did do was take out a USB webcam, but whether that actually did anything, I don't know. It didn't seem to have any immediate effect.

At any rate, I'm avoiding restarts for the time being. If there's any info from the dumps, I'd appreciate any insight Masterchief or anyone else reading this might have.

Spoke too soon. Computer not shutting down quickly as it should again. I'll see tomorrow morning how it boots up.
