Weird Windows 8 DP BSOD.

I installed the Windows 8 Developer Preview, then, after switching to desktop mode, and leaving the computer in idle for some minutes... this BSOD appears:

"SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED". - It doesn't point to any driver or program, nor gives me any error code.

It then saves the memory dump and reboots...

That error only appears when there's high disk usage, e.g. when installing a driver.

After the disk usage has gone away, the system works like a charm. But... if i try installing any software, or if i do anything that increases disk usage, the error comes back.

So after this painful experience with WDP, i wiped it out and installed windows 7 sp1...

But i really want to test this OS... i can reinstall it and send the memory dump file so that you guys can analyse it.

Thanks in advance.

UPDATE: As asked, i have left zip file containing the dump from the C:\Windows\Minidump folder.

William if you want the crash analysis....

We need the DMP files created when the system crashes as they are the only source of information as to what drivers were loaded and what happened just prior to the crash.
Without them we can only give educated generic help.

Please follow these instructions to find and upload the information we need to find the cause of the problem.

If you can boot normally do so and go here to download Capt.Jack.Sparrows great data collection app.
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2829-windows-8-log-collector.html#post33808

If you cant boot normally try booting into safe mode with networking (F8).
If successful also download Capt.Jack.Sparrows collection app.

After downloading it, please run it as admin (elevated privileges) and click the get all button.

When finished compress (ZIP) the file and upload it to us here.

Please provide any other info (ie system specs, when the crashes occur, etc.) that might be useful too.

If this is a one off (or if you are going to re-install) I wouldnt bother but if they continue I would do what JMH is about to suggest.

Caused by a memory exception..

Generic Resolution.

If you are not equipped to debug this problem, you should use some basic troubleshooting techniques.

Make sure you have enough disk space.

If a driver is identified in the bug check message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates.

Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates.

Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

If you are going to keep Win 8 on the computer this is what you would need to do...

These crashes were caused by memory corruption/exception (probably a driver).
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

If you have raid > update its Driver.

Memtest.
*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

Driver verifier

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Special Pool", "Force Pending I/O Requests" and "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen.
Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly.
The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out.
If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation.

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

I think i'll try the Driver Verifier... because i know my memory is intact (otherwise, windows 7 would crash as well).
And yes, i'll keep this on my computer because i plan to upgrade to the Consumer Preview when it comes out.

So, to solve the problem i just have to remove the driver right?

Unfortunately you wont be able to upgrade as VRosa has stated. I wanted to let you know that Blue screen often is in error as it was in your case and because it is we don't recommend it.

Well... the same 0x7E bugcheck happened when i tried to install a driver update...
Here is what i noticed, if i only install system updates l(like security updates for example), the system won't crash.

If i try to install a driver update, it does one of these 2 things:

1. It will BSOD - with the same and exact error (BugCheck 0x7E).
2. Windows Update will crash with error 800700B7.

I'll stay with this OS as long as i can. Now i at least know how to avoid the BSOD.

Anyway, i know this is still a pre-beta build. And Pre-Beta = CRASH

The Consumer Preview is 17 days away... since i don't have any important data on my computer, when the CP comes out, i'll just wipe everything and install it.
