Lots of Crashes

If I play almost any game about 20+ minutes in I get a crash. It used to show a BSOD with either the irql_not_less_or_equal error or dpc_watchdog_violation but now all the sounds from whatever I was doing cut out and the screen goes black while the computer is still on. Any help would be appreciated. Also the system info may show Intel HD Graphics 4000 but my computer has switchable Nvidia graphics (GeForce GT 640m LE) and both Nvidia Inspector and MSI Afterburner monitors show that the dedicated GPU is being used.

More crashes just randomly. Screen freezes and then it either goes black or I have to manually shut my computer down. Since there was no screen I don't know whether this report will be any different but I ran the tool again just in case.

MSI Afterburner (along with Riva Tuner and EVGA Precision) are known to cause BSOD's in some Windows systems (it's driver is usually RTCore64.sys). Please un-install both of them immediately!

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

Please update the Intel Management Engine.
Try these links:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...3276&keyword=intel+management+engine&lang=eng
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...3091&keyword=intel+management+engine&lang=eng
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...2092&keyword=intel+management+engine&lang=eng

If that doesn't work, then try the Lenovo links in this Google search: https://www.google.com/search?q=int...s=org.mozilla:en-US;official&client=firefox-a

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Unknown driver - suspect that it's a part of the Sony utilities, but can't confirm it. Check to see what thermal regulating utilities you have installed on the system.
semav6thermal64ro.sys - this driver hasn't been added to the DRT as of this run. Please search Google/Bing for the driver if additional information is needed.

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

I was able to update the Intel Management Engine using the Lenovo links but not the Intel links. As far as the Cyberlink driver is concerned I couldn't find that driver listing on their website and so couldn't update it. I couldn't find the device on my computer and so could not uninstall it. semav6thermal64ro.sys was something to do with a sony thermal regulating utility when I looked it up on google. There was only one place I found a trace about it and it was a problem on this forum so I don't know about updating it and what not because I couldn't find it anywhere else. I had one crash earlier today before I went about updating the Intel Management Engine and haven't checked since then since it is around midnight here. I'll leave you with another report just in case you'd like to look at it.

I ran the verifier and the memory dump wouldn't attach here (maybe too big?) also I included another report. I did it twice and got two different errors.

SYSTEM_SERVICCE_EXCEPTION (aswSnx.sys)

This one happened when I decided to start uninstalling something because my computer hadn't crashed for a good 10-20 minutes and I just wanted to get rid of the program (cyberlink powerdvd)

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (aswNdisFlt.sys)

This one just happened on startup after I logged into my computer.

Here's the links for the management system:

The Verifier memory dumps point to aswSnx.sys and aswNdisFlt.sys
Both are drivers for your Avast software

Please:
- ensure that Driver Verifier is turned off (select "Delete existing settings" in verifier.exe, click "Finish" and reboot")
- uninstall the Avast software
- use this free tool/procedure to remove any remnants of the Avast: avast! Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for avast! Removal
- enable Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall (you can do this through the Action Center)
- monitor for further BSOD's

If you wish to reinstall Avast, please wait until the system is stable for at least a week or two
Then download the latest, Win8.1 compatible version and install it.

Memory Dumps:
again the error I got from driver verifier was:

DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION (nvlddmkm.sys)

Update: I rolled back my Nvidia drivers to the first compatible ones for Windows 8.1 and I don't think I'm getting that error anymore. I'm not getting bsods anymore but whenever I play any game my computer stutters then freezes then black screens and I have to manually restart. My gpu, cpu, hdd, and general computer temps are fine so that isn't the issue. I still am not 100% about the nvidia driver thing being fixed either.

I'm late for work, but will try to look at these within 24 hours

Also, Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

I'm thinking this is a hardware issue, most likely with your video card.
But one of the Driver Verifier memory dumps blames your wireless network drivers.

So, let's start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
Please do all of them, not just the video tests.

Let us know the results and we can move on from there.

Additionally (just in case there's an OS corruption):

Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after each one:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

If the problem is fixable, you can use this command to repair it (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after typing it:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

From this article: Repair a Windows Image

You can also run sfc.exe /scannow from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt to check for further corruption.

It passed the tests and as far as the command prompt things you suggested it told me the issues it found were repairable and it successfully repaired them. Even after all of this when I went into a game the screen froze as usual. However, this time I was finally able to get a BSOD and like the first post I put on here it said:

DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION

I'm not sure what could possibly be causing this but you would know better than I. When I looked up Windows 8.1 issues related to this error it was mostly driver/firmware issues so there has to be another driver or some device firmware somewhere in my system that's incompatible. I attached the results from the SF Diagnostics Tool so I guess that's all I can do.

I'm uncertain if this is hardware or software. I suspect that hardware is most likely - but that's just a hunch on my part.

Options:
- troubleshoot the video card (try these hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics )
- troubleshoot the network card (disable the wireless in the UEFI/BIOS, then use the wired connection)
- find another update for the Intel Management Engine
- remove the older thermal driver
- revert to Win8 to test for problems

The easiest thing to do is to visit the Sony page for your system and update ALL of the drivers: Sony eSupport - SVS151290X - Support

Please note that there is a critical update to Vaio Update that MUST be installed BEFORE updating to Win8.1
Have you done that? If not, then I'd suggest contacting Sony to see what you can do to work around this problem (I'd start by uninstalling Vaio Update).

Please also note that there is also an update for the SFEP.sys driver (Sony Firmware Extension Parser) under the Firmware section of the webpage.
