There have been other contexts in which it just reboots. The example of doing it while using VLC player last night is just one context.

Frequently, it does it during a period of being away from the computer.

Only 106 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.
Please un-install all AMD/ATI video stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then, download (but DO NOT install) a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD (in the upper right corner of the page)
Use this procedure to install the DRIVER ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Un-install". Reboot for changes to take affect.
Sometimes the driver remains and continues to cause BSOD's. If this is the case for you, post back and we'll give further instructions for safely removing it.

If overclocking, please stop. Remove the overclock and return the system to stock/standard values while we're troubleshooting. Once the system is stable again, feel free to resume the overclocking.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Also, please run these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics. Let us know the results and we can move on from there.

Item 1 - "Only 106 Windows Updates installed..."

It doesn't have as many windows updates as most systems because it isn't as old as most systems. It is completely up-to-date.

Item 2 - "AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone ..."

I had the latest video driver from the system manufacturer installed on the system and this file would have been part of that application. (From here, Win 8 64, 'vga', "Support for HD7350 ,HD7470 , ...")

The cpu and video are as follows:
processor: "A10-6700 APU with Radeon HD Graphics"
display adapter: "Radeon HD 8670D"

This is a stock machine. I haven't added anything but a second hard drive.

Even though AMD makes in exceedingly hard to find the drivers for the video, I eventually tracked it down. Their site says the one to use is AMD Catalyst™ 13.11 Beta Driver for Windows ("Last Updates: 12/3/2013, article Number: RN-WIN-B13.11").

Installed it on Dec. 20.

Item 3: Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section....

There is no "non-plug and play drivers" section (even with "show hidden devices" selected).

Item 4:
I'm not overclocking. I don't even know what that is.

Item 5: AsUpIO.sys Mon Aug 2 22:47:59 2010 (4C57835F)...

I have updated the Asus "AI Suite" software that came with the computer from v2.01.01 to v2.01.06 (from Asus site).

That update would also cover "AiChargerPlus.sys Wed Apr 18 21:17:35 2012 (4F8F67AF)"

I uninstalled Acronis a week ago.

Earlier this evening, I got another crash...

The latest memory dump doesn't show AMD Overdrive or the W-D software (although the one on the 19th does)
In fact, the 26 Dec memory dump only shows 2 third party drivers. IME that's a sign of a hardware problem in most cases

Please ensure that you run ALL of these free diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics
If unable to run them, let us know so we can make further suggestions.

Arg3: 0000000000000010, Reserved
Arg4: 0000000000000001, Reserved
The reference count of an object is illegal for the current state of the object.
Each time a driver uses a pointer to an object the driver calls a kernel routine
to increment the reference count of the object. When the driver is done with the
pointer the driver calls another kernel routine to decrement the reference count.
Drivers must match calls to the increment and decrement routines. This bugcheck
can occur because an object's reference count goes to zero while there are still
open handles to the object, in which case the fourth parameter indicates the number
of opened handles. It may also occur when the object?s reference count drops below zero
whether or not there are open handles to the object, and in that case the fourth parameter
contains the actual value of the pointer references count.

Status...

After about 6 hours of fighting with my computer and doing research, I finally succeeded at creating a bootable USB key to run memtest86+. 24 hours, 15 passes: no errors.

I'm dealing with a problem of the optical drive not recognizing the presence of a perfectly good blank disk. After a bunch of troubleshooting, I gave in and took it into BestBuy (it's only 2 bloody months old!) and this trip resulted in them saying "Hey, it's working fine. Must be fixed, whatever you did before you brought it in." I boot up at home, and the optical drive again fails to recognize any disk, even a commercial audio disk. I figure that's a completely separate issue but it's aggravating and is really slowing down the process of simply preparing to run these test let alone doing them.

Do you really mean for me to run all of them? There are probably about 30 tests included on that page.

- - - - - -

Attaching tonight's crash results. I think what was running at the time was only Serviio (watching a movie on a tv that was sourced from this computer) and maybe uTorrent and possibly Firefox was open. Wasn't actively on the computer, though.

Run all the tests.
Admittedly the video tests may be a bit much - but at least run FurMark and and the SimTK test (#1 in the second set of video tests)
As for the CPU tests - run 1 at least, 2 if possible

Let's have a look at this for errors from the drive (make the report soon after you have a problem with the drive):
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

This memory dump looks like hardware to me.
