Solved BSOD with errors: dxgmms1.sys, irql not less... and more

BSOD when gaming/ movies dxgmms1.sys, irql not less...

Hi there,

Over the past few months I have experienced numerous BSoDs on my Windows 8 install. Under the event viewer I always get the Event 41 (Kernel Error) message, and I have experienced multiple variations of the BSoD with reasons including “irql_not_less_or_equal”, “irql_not_less_or_equal: dxgmms1.sys” and “kernel security check failure”.

Over the time I have reinstalled Windows 8 at least twice (including reformatting the primary HDD on all occasions), replaced nearly all the components in my PC, including case, video card, PSU (pretty much everything except the motherboard and ram).

I’ve reviewed many threads on the issue but have had no luck trying to find any solution.

I have attached the dump file, I hope that I have included all the necessary information in that (let me know if there is anything missing).

The errors generally occur when I am using a high performance process such as playing a video game, watching HD movies or rendering. I hope someone is able to help me with this as it has been driving me insane trying to fix it

Based solely on your description (I haven't looked at the reports yet), please
- install this free utility and monitor your temps: HWMonitor CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting
- then run these free diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

There are no memory dumps in the attached reports, please do the following:

Upload Dump Files:
NOTE: If using a disk cleaning utility, please stop using it while we are troubleshooting your issues.
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try copying the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there. If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service. Then post the link to it in your topic so that we can download it.

Also, search your entire hard drive for files ending in .dmp, .mdmp, and .hdmp. Zip up any that you find and upload them with your next post.

Only 110 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

You have 4 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

This device has problems in Device Manager:

USB PnP Sound Device USB\VID_0D8C&PID_013C&MI_00\6&38C1FD5&0&0000 This device cannot start.

Please uninstall any software for this device, then physically remove the device from your system. Feel free to try it again AFTER the system has been stabilized.

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

Thank you very much for your detailed, and resourceful reply usasma. I followed all your your advice, and pretty much all the tests you suggested came up with positive results. Since writing the post I recieved a BSoD with an error of bugcode_usb_driver (the first I had ever seen of this kind). This certainly narrowed down what my problem likely is.

After searching for more advice related to this error I follwed a few steps and have yet to recieve a BSoD for the last two days. I know it is still early, but I am psoitive this has fixed my issue. With one such game, Sanctum 2, I could only get around 30 mins- 45 mins before it would BSoD, but since writing this I have played sessions 3+ hours.

I will outline the steps I followed in the hope that if anyone else gets this issue, they too can hopefully solve it.
1) Go to device manager and uninstall all the options under the USB devices panel. Unplug all USB devices then give PC a restart.
2) The USB chipset on my motherboard was Intel 82801gb, so I went to the Intel download center and downloaded the Intel Chipset Software for my model of chipset. Install the software then restart PC
