Black screen when waking from sleep mode with legacy HW

My system is old, I know.

MSI Neo2 Nforce3 + HD4650 Radeon AGP + 2 GB mem + AMD Athlon 3000+

However, I wanted to try Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation for it and was able to install it successfully with 32 bit version (64 bit didn't work). I installed Radeon legacy AGP Hotfix 12.6 drivers that seem to work for the old AGP card giving Youtube HD playback! Not too shabby for a single core beast.

So I have been happy with the system performance (faster to boot than XP etc.).

However, I have encountered two problems that I haven't been able to resolve:

1 - Realtek Gigabit Ethernet (8111) fails to initialize the Internet on some boots, requiring enable/disable driver to make it work. I have installed newest drivers from Realtek website but no effect.

2 - When the system goes to sleep, it wakes up with black screen and no way to get picture back except resetting the computer. I have tried to change my MB BIOS setup (I have the latest BIOS installed) to disable S3 and use only S1 mode but to no avail. Black screen awaits in every wake up. I have also experienced once the driver_power_state_failure error..

So, I see there are many posts about black screens and sleep modes but I haven't found the solution for Nforce3 motherboard AGP setups yet. Can anyone help or point to a solution?

Ok, here goes. I know that the nforce 3 chipset is not officially supported but drivers are being loaded successfully and everything else seems to be relatively stable (except the integrated network controllers giving limited connection on boot). I think if such an old chipset could be supported by windows 8.1, it would add to the reputation of the OS being very hardware friendly as well as streamlined version. After all the hassle with Modern UI/Desktop usability, MS would definitely need some positive arguments for the new system, which seems to be quite good "under the hood". So far I have found that Win 8.1 gives improvement over XP with this configuration!

The compatibility issues won't be constant, and won't necessarily make the system totally unstable. (and I have found that the nForce 4 chipset is most likely incompatible w/Win8.1)
My point here is that we may not be able to fix the errors (but we'll try) - so your only recourse (when you get fed up with the errors) may be to revert to a previous version of the OS

This isn't a matter of Win8.1 not supporting the nForce 3 chipset - rather it's a matter of nVidia not updating the chipset to work with Win8.1. Most times this is a financial decision on the manufacturer's part - not a technical problem (they won't sell any more nForce 3 chipsets - so why update it?).

And, finally, it's not just the chipset (although that is a major factor). They system has numerous drivers installed that date from 2006/7 and they are most likely not compatible w/Win8.1

Only 19 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 26 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (26 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web.
