    8.1 - KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR & Others

Hey everyone, nice to meet ya'll!

So recently, after upgrading her Sony Vaio Laptop to Windoes 8.1 my girlfriend started seing BSODs that would pop with different error messages:

    - KERNET_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR; shows up most of the times
    - KERNET_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (Msfs.sys); only a a few times
    - MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. showed up once.

She gave me the laptop to backup all data before sending it to Sony because it's still on warranty, but they take up to a month to repair and return the computer and as a college student it's kind of complicated being without her computer for that long so I was hoping there's some way around this even if it's a fresh install, so I decided to drop by to ask for help!

Also, I attached the required dumps from SF Diagnostic Tool as by the instructions thread, thanks in advance.

    Hi

Please read instructions from the below link and post "Speccy" snapshot of your system.

Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - Internet Applications Mini-Guides

Can you reproduce the BSOD by doing some specific tasks ? (ie, shutdown , play movies , games etc).

Unfortunately, I've tried everything, from gaming marathons, full systems scans with MWB and Windows Defender or even leaving the computer on reproducing an entire series and it wouldn't BSOD again, it happens completly randomly or atleast i can't seem to figure out what causes them.

    Here's the speccy snapshot: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/E...keTLBZwgDAjhYi

    Hi

As you stated in the first post, crash dump shows Bugcheck 0x7A.

    Code:
    BugCheck 7A, {4, 0, ffffe000050fe650, 44f87c960}

    Probably caused by : ntkrnlmp.exe ( nt! ?? ::FNODOBFM::`string'+601f )
Here is the Microsoft technical explanation about this stop code - Bug Check 0x7A: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR (Windows Debuggers)

In simple words this error means the system filed to read the "page file" which is located on the hard drive. If you scroll down the Microsoft reference page, you can see the common causes.

    • 0xC000009A, or STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES, indicates a lack of nonpaged pool resources.
    • 0xC000009C, or STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR, typically indicates bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk.
    • 0xC000009D, or STATUS_DEVICE_NOT_CONNECTED, indicates defective or loose cabling, termination, or that the controller does not see the hard disk.
    • 0xC000016A, or STATUS_DISK_OPERATION_FAILED, indicates bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk.
    • 0xC0000185, or STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR, indicates improper termination or defective cabling on SCSI devices or that two devices are trying to use the same IRQ.
    • 0xC000000E, or STATUS_NO_SUCH_DEVICE, indicates a hardware failure or an incorrect drive configuration. Check your cables and check the drive with the diagnostic utility available from your drive manufacturer. If you are using older PATA (IDE) drives, this status code can indicate an incorrect master/subordinate drive configuration.

As you can see, this particular bug check is manly caused by a failing hard drive. I asked for the "Speccy" snapshot particularly to collect the hard drive health status.

As per the SMART data, your hard drive is clearly failing.

    Code:
    C4 Reallocation Event Count: 100 (100) Data 00000000B2C5 Current Pending Sector Count: 066 (066) Data 00000003F0

There is a large number of pending sectors in your hard drive which simply means there are severe bad sectors in the drive surface. In a healthy drive, it should be zero. At work, we will replace the drive even if there is a single current pending sector.

Immediately backup all the important data to an external medium.

Please download and run "Seagate Seatools" from the below link.

    SeaTools for Windows | Seagate

Select your hard drive and run "Basic Tests --> Short Generic" first. If it passes, run "Basic Tests --> Long Generic" ( full surface scan). Please report the result of tests in next reply.

Its almost certainly nothing to do with your rig `PER SE`

Its almost certainly nothing to do with your rig `PER SE`. Its most likely to do with what Microsoft churn out.

I get the same BSoD message time and time again on a very high end Haswell i7 Desktop rig with a GTX 780; on Windows 8.1 x64 with all updates; and I have tried all the drivers and BIOS/Chipset updates three months can cope with.

Although the BSoD is not really frequent; it does seem to be when I have MS Explorer running with Firefox and Google Chrome.

Its like they code to smack each other in the face, but hit the customer.

MS Windows 8.1 Pro should have a preventative measure to STOP THE BSoD BEFORE IT HAPPENS.

You fail to explain why completely different hardware setups get the same problem.

    Did you notice that?

Yes, I notice all the junk people put on their systems that cause stops. I sure do.

In my case; that would be no more than a few games, a couple of prolific browsers, an Unzip file and MS Office.

    Are you blaming MS Office?

No, I'm blaming your hardware, bios settings or other poor drivers on your system.

MS Office does not have drivers, so you should know better.
