Getting Many Crashes over the Past Week

Ever since I began playing Battlefield 4, I have began having many crashes. I just recently enabled BSOD so I can see what the error exactly was. However, I have no idea how to interpret these dumps. Here is a summary of my issue that I posted on another site to no avail:

Hey guys, I just purchased Battlefield 4. I had similar issues like this when playing the beta a few weeks ago, but no such issues during BF3.

I had been playing for a few hours and then all of the sudden everything crashed. The PC seems to still but running (fans are running loud, probably max), but my monitors lost signal, and sound and mouse/keyboard input went out. Right after the crash, the computer reboots itself. However, the fans are still running at max and the monitors aren't getting any input. Sound and keyboard/mouse does work after the reboot. With the monitors not working, I just have to hard turn the computer off and then back on to fix it. Ever since it first happened, it has been happening constantly about 10 minutes after being into a game.

This was happening a few weeks ago as well while playing the BF4 beta. I stopped playing the beta, however the issue continued happening. The PC would crash outside of the game even while just browsing the internet. I rolled back to before I installed the BF4 beta and opened up the case and reset everything. The issue seemed to be fixed at that point. Now that I have installed the retail copy of the game, it is happening again. The computer is now crashing about every 15 minutes.

As far as temps go, they seem pretty normal while idle. CPU at 35 C and GPU idling at 55 C (might be a bit high). My computer just crashed about an hour ago while doing nothing. All that was running was spotify. I don't think it would be a temperature issue if it is crashing while idle. I noticed that right after a crash, the GPU fans run extremely loud, probably at max. I woke up to this happening at around 6AM this morning. After this happens, all input and output (monitors, keyboard, mouse), but there still seems to be power coming in since all the LED lights and my fans are still on. Does this sound like a GPU issue to you? I would much rather have to replace the video card than a motherboard.

I played a couple BF4 matches last night to check temps at load. Here are the temps from CPUID (see the max column):

http://i.imgur.com/aXXaZpu.png

The GPU temp does seem very high, but I don't know if that would be enough to warrant the whole machine crashing.

This is a pretty scary issue, hope someone can give me some kind of input as to what is going on. Sorry if I gave too much info, just trying to get the issue across.

Here are my specs:

OS: Windows 8 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30 GHz w/ Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Memory: 8GB RAM
GPU: GeForce GTX 570 running latest 331.65 drivers
Power Supply: Corsair GS700

Attached is a zip file with the BSOD dumps:

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Windows 8.1
Although the max GPU temp was 86ºC - that's not usually hot enough to cause BSOD - but I would look into the cooling solution for your GPU (everything from how the cooler is attached to the card, the cooler being clean, the fan working, and good airflow in the caase)

Your BIOS dates from 2011. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD. I usually can't see this info in the reports, so I rely on you to check it.
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to. If involved these should be visible in the memory dump - but it doesn't hurt to check manually.

These device have problems in Device Manager:
High Definition Audio Device HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8086&DEV_2805&SUBSYS_80862805&REV_1000\4&38A04C3F&0&0301 This device cannot start.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1086&SUBSYS_15713842&REV_A1\4&38AC18AC&0&0009 32
The first device is an Intel Display Audio The second device is your video card and the 32 error code is that the device is disabled.

The solution for both of these is to:
- download the latest, Win8.1 compatible driver for the device(s) from the manufacturer's website (Intel and nVidia - NOT the PC manufacturer)
- uninstall the current software/drivers for the device(s)
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- check Device Manager to ensure that they are fixed
- monitor for further BSOD's

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics. Let us know the results and we can move on from there. I would start with the video tests as a lot of the errors point to that component.

Thank you very much for the help. I have updated all the drivers you listed as well as the BIOS, SSD firmware, and storage controllers. I am still having many crashes, and have attached the latest few dumps. I hope you or someone else can help. I am getting to the point where I think it might be better to just do a fresh install of Windows (though I am not sure if that would help). I am in the process of running those hardware diagnostics you linked.

I'm having trouble running the FurMark test. The system crashes pretty much as soon as I start the diagnostic (within 30 seconds). That could mean this could be a GPU issue. However, it is tough to distinguish whether it is due to the benchmark, since I am getting crashes within a few minutes of booting up anyways.

Also, I have noticed that most of the time I don't get a blue screen when the PC crashes. Most of the time, it just goes out (fans at max, monitors go out and sound messes up) without a BSOD. So maybe the crash eventually causes the blue screen (just brainstorming here) but I can't see it because all the displays are out?

The fact that FurMark crashes the system is a likely indicator that there's a problem with your video card.
One of the previous memory dumps also blamed video.
I once had a video card that didn't show high temperatures - but it was overheating anyway (I found out when I got a 2nd degree burn when touching the video card!).

When a system shuts down (crashes) without a BSOD there's mostly 2 reasons for this
1) the BSOD went by so fast that you didn't see it
2) there was a hardware problem (such as overheating) and the system crashed without allowing the crash processes to execute and capture a crash dump file.

Start by opening up the side of the case and pointing a house fan at the video card (on HIGH).
DO NOT touch anything inside the case!!!
Then try the tests and see if it takes longer for the system to crash.
If so, then it's most likely an overheating problem.
Please post back with the results.

More video troubleshooting (but this really does sound like an overheating issue):

Yep, it was the video card going bad. I attempted to do a fresh install of windows and was still getting crashes 30 seconds after booting to a USB stick with the windows install on it. I went out and bought a cheap video card on craigslist to test it, and everything works just fine. No problems at all with the new card.

I will have to buy a better card, but oh well, at least I know the issue now. Thank you very much for your help!

Any idea what is causing these random crashes?

Hello,

I am currently having problem with some random crashes. All of the sudden, my sound and monitors will go out, but the computer still seems to be running. I can hear the fans on and the LED lights are still on the case.

Now, I was getting this problem a lot a few weeks ago, and it slowly began to increase in frequency. Eventually, I got to the point where it was happening on startup and I couldn’t even get into the OS. The problem began after I had purchased Battlefield 4 and was playing it for a few days. I was getting a few blue screens, but not one for every crash. Some of the dumps indicated it was a video card problem, which seemed likely to me at that point. So, I went out and bought a $15 card off craigslist and put it in the machine. I also did a fresh install of windows at this point to make sure it wasn’t a driver issue. After this, there were no issues at all for a few days. I couldn’t test the card in game, since it was a Radeon HD 4800. I took this to mean that it was totally a video card issue and purchased a new card, a GTX 770 (old card was a GTX 570).

I got the new card installed and played BF4 for a couple days without issues. And then, the computer crash and the issue began again. Now, there are a few differences that I can note between the old crashes and the new, though they seem generally the same. Now, sometimes instead of just all cutting to black, my monitors go white for a while. Also, sometimes the computer will restart itself and my monitors will come back in. I believed during the older crashes, it would restart as well. However, the monitors never came back in and I couldn’t be for sure. Since I did the fresh install of Windows, one of these recent crashes has produced a BSOD. I will attach that dump.

The new crashes were beginning to grow more frequency (from once every couple hours, to once every 10-20 minutes), so I have just reinserted the old, crappy HD 4800. It has been going now for a few hours without a crash with this old card.

Now, I have a few ideas of what might be happening here. One, the new card is bad and I need to RMA it. Two, it could be a power supply issue, with the new card (and the older 570) drawing too much power and causing crashes? Three, could it be a motherboard issue? If so, I have no idea how to check for that. These are the things I have no idea to test for, and could really use some help with. I have also run Memtest and seen no issues.

Hopefully someone has some ideas about what this could be; I really am starting to go crazy here. This issue has been ongoing for almost a month now. Hope this wasn’t an information overload for anyhone trying to help. Also, for reference, here is an old thread I posted about the issue before I decided to get a new card:

EDIT: It looks like my new thread was moved to my old thread, though I am not sure it is a BSOD issue anymore.

There's enough in common that we'll assume it's a part of the same problem.
It's not unusual to get video issues after "fixing" a BSOD - and it may require extra work to fix it.

Please provide a new set of these reports (even though it doesn't seem to be a BSOD issue): http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

Also, Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
