frequent BSOD

Hi Guys,

In the last 24 hours or so I have had maybe 15 BSODs. Most of them seem to be when the cpu is under some sort of load. I downloaded the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool and this BSODed 3 times out of 5 while running.

I did a system restore back to the earliest I could go, before I was having troubles, and this hasn't helped.

thanks for your help.

Phil

Some more information. Since my last post I have updated all the motherboard drivers and I am still having crashes. I have attached the latest from the sf_diags.

My second monitor has now stopped working. It runs from the onboard graphics. It may be a driver/bios issue as I have just updated them but it may also be a hardware problem.

thanks for you help guys.

I have been doing some hardware testing. Memory and GPU both seem fine. The CPU seems to be overheating. Realtemp tells me it gets up to 95c very quickly when I do the prime95 stress test. I turned off the test at around 100c and believe it would have gone higher. During the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool test, which causes a BSOD about 50% of the time, the temp rose to over 95c and then crashed.

With hindsight, the last 2 days when I have been having trouble would have been 2 of the hottest days since bought the PC, with ambient temperatures at around 30c. This morning I have been running the pc with the side off and a house fan pointing inside and I haven't had any crashes other then when I do the intel test.

So I have a cpu cooling problem which I will address with an aftermarket cooler and then see where it's at.

Thanks for all your help, guys, it's really appreciated.

I apologize for not getting to your post sooner.
I go from the oldest post to the newest when I work.
Replying to your own posts has moved you later in the "queue" - so I wasn't able to catch up with you before this.
For that, I apologize.

But it sounds like you've done a great job in troubleshooting the system and that you have identified the most likely problem.
Should you need help again, this topic will automatically send me an email if you (or anyone else) replies.
I reply to emails before I start working the "queue"

Good luck!

No problems.

Last night I noticed that my CPU frequency was going unexpectedly high. I checked the bios and it was set to some random manual overclocking. Once I set it back to automatic my pc has gone back to normal. It is still running a bit hot and I will put in an aftermarket cpu fan anyway but I think the problem has been identified. I've never overclocked a PC and I'm 100% certain it wasn't something I did through bios. I'm yet to find a program I have installed that can do it from within windows.

To add to the confusion, something similar happened to my modem at about the same time and it required a hard reset to fix. Also, at the same time, something went wrong with the firmware on my qnap which required reloading manually through the terminal. The only theory I have which covers all three happening at the same time is a power spike or something similar.

Most of my troubleshooting came from reading past posts on this forum so thank you everyone for your work. It is appreciated.

One of the biggest differences that I've seen between Win8/8.1 and previous OS's is that 8/8.1 is much more involved in the BIOS/UEFI. Most of what I've noticed relates to incompatibilities - but I believe that there can also be changes in the UEFI/BIOS when making setting changes in Win8/8.1.

Most recently, my own system won't wake from input on the USB devices - which I had set previously. Also, I've seen a number of posts where people are overclocking and didn't even know that they were.

Good luck!
