Laptop crash on resume from sleep. No dump files!

Hi all,

First time poster here(although I've used the forum as a resource forever). I have a Lenovo u410 Ultrabook with an odd problem that began 3-4 months ago that I've been unable to resolve.

Whenever the laptop resumes from sleep mode it forces a complete restart and fails to create a dump file. I have verified that windows is set to create dump files and if I force a crash in some other way I will get a dump file but when it crashes when trying to resume my minidumps folder remains empty.

As far as I can tell it enters sleep mode fine and it's not until it tries to resume that the reboot is triggered. When the problem began I was on Windows 8 and since then have upgraded to 8.1 in the hopes of it helping (which it didn't). The laptop was able to sleep normally for the first 2-3 months I had it.

Things I have tried so far:
  • Installing all the official drivers from the Lenovo support website.
  • Running system file checker.
  • Running the Microsoft Safety Scanner.
  • Sleeping with no peripheral devices connected, tried both while running on AC and battery.
  • Removing and re-seating the memory.
  • Refreshing windows (I haven't tried a complete reset yet, hoping to avoid that if I can).

In event viewer I get the following error and critical event each time after it reboots:
  • Error: The previous system shutdown at <time> on ‎<date> was unexpected.
  • Critical: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
  • There are no other warnings, errors, critical entries.

I am attaching the results of the "Grab All" in the SF Diagnostic Tool right after a reboot and I am hoping that helps. Other than sleep mode not functioning the laptop appears to be running normally without any problems.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

For starters:
At work we start all repairs with a set of diagnostics. Often they find problems that weren't even expected. It's a waste of time to try to fix software on a system that has hardware problems.
Please try these free diagnostics for starters: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Also, please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.dmp If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link to it here.

Realtek network connection is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?

I always suspect USB audio - do you have that installed (I haven't looked in depth yet)

This BSOD error points to networking issues:

I'd suggest trying Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

secdrv.sys dates from 2006 - there is an update available for Win8 (and maybe 8.1). Be sure that you have ALL available Windows updates.

Also, make sure that you visit the Lenovo website and get ALL available Win8.1 drivers. If they don't have Win8.1 drivers, it may be that this system isn't compatible with Win8.1. If you revert back to Win8 because of this we can always troubleshoot it from there.

In short, we need dump files in order to see what's going on here. I suspect that the crash occurs to early (or late) in the boot (shutdown) process for Windows to recognize it.

Also, Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Hi usasma,

Thank you for your reply.

One of the first things I did when this began was a complete memory test and hdd test, either of which found any problems. I will re-run the memory test again and leave it for longer (overnight) and see if that makes a difference.

Check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.dmp If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link to it here.

Unfortunately there is no memory dump generated at all. I have tried all the options ("Small memory dump", "Kernel memory dump", "Complete memory dump" and "Automatic memory dump"). For none of them is a dump generated, which is what makes this issue so frustrating.

Realtek network connection is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?

This was deliberate. I had disabled it awhile ago after doing some wired LAN work. I have since enabled it but it has not changed anything.

I always suspect USB audio - do you have that installed (I haven't looked in depth yet)

I do not and never have had any USB audio of any kind installed.

I'd suggest trying Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

I will run this once I've had a chance to run my latest backup (in case of the worst). I am hoping that it will, at least, generate a dump file.

secdrv.sys dates from 2006 - there is an update available for Win8 (and maybe 8.1). Be sure that you have ALL available Windows updates.

I have all available Windows updates (including all optional ones, even the Bing Toolbar ) I was unable to find any update to secdrv.sys nor was I able to determine how or why it's installed (seems to be something related to Safedisc?) otherwise I'd happily remove it.

Also, make sure that you visit the Lenovo website and get ALL available Win8.1 drivers. If they don't have Win8.1 drivers, it may be that this system isn't compatible with Win8.1. If you revert back to Win8 because of this we can always troubleshoot it from there.

This was the first thing I tried when the problem began. When this didn't work I "Refreshed" Windows 8 and installed all the drivers fresh. When that didn't work I updated to Windows 8.1 and installed all the 8.1 drivers from Lenovo. It doesn't seem to be related to 8.1 because it began with Windows 8.0 and I only updated to 8.1 to see if that would resolve the problem.

As requested I am attaching the exported event log. Unfortunately it is not very long since I had recently cleared the log (doh) but it does include several attempts to put the device into sleep mode.

I will report back once I've had a chance to run the memory diagnostics and Driver Verifier. At this point I kind of feel like I need to do a complete fresh install (reset) of Windows 8 and see if it happens with everything back to the OEM. If you can think of anything else I can that it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I think I finally got a minidump. Apparently when I booted this morning 8:13am on 11/4 it created a minimdump and there is a corresponding critical error in the event manager for "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first." I am attaching the minidump as well as an updated event log.

There is also a full memory.dmp file in the Windows directory and I can upload if necessary but it's 1.8GB.

Can someone take a look at these and give me a suggestion for how to proceed?

Thank you!

Based on my (limited) ability to analyze the big 1.8GB memory.dmp file here is the error. If I'm reading this correct (a big if) then it looks like the problem might be with raspppoe.sys?

Don't remove secdrv.sys - it's a part of the OS.
I don't know what updates it, but it's updated on my Win8 x64 system.

Resetting the system back to the OEM install would be the best test.
That'll leave the system the way it was when they tested it in the factory.
Don't install any 3rd party programs/devices until you've thoroughly tested the system.

I see a couple of Warnings/Errors related to the Intel Management Engine - and have suspected this driver for the last month or so. I wonder if the version on your system is compatible w/Win8 - but I'm still researching it, so it's just a hunch for now.

The EventID 41 events (the Critical Events in Event Viewer) are simply Windows way of saying "WTF?" - as it doesn't know why it was shut down. You'll get these errors with bugchecks (BSOD's), but will also get them with hardware errors (such as overheating) and will even get them if you shut down the computer by pressing/holding the power button down.

I am not a memory dump analysis expert (so I don't often work with Full Memory Dumps) - but what I see is 2 things:
1) involvement of networking drivers
2) the failure bucket ID of: 0x9F_3_POWER_DOWN_IMAGE_ntkrnlmp

From this I'd think it was probably a program that is able to access the network,
and it's driver misbehaves during power down transitions (which causes a crash of
ntkrnlmp.exe)

Driver Verifier may help by identifying this driver.

I wouldn't think that raspppoe.sys is to blame:
- it wasn't directly blamed by the memory dump
- other drivers will often cause Windows drivers to crash - even if there isn't a problem with them. That's probably why ntkrnlmp.exe is blamed in the minidump (if it was a problem with it, then you'd see many more problems other than the occasional memory dump).
- it is a Windows driver and they are rarely to blame (especially on fully updated systems)
- issues w/Windows drivers are usually fixed before you see them - but you can use DISM and SFC.EXE to see if they need fixing (and they may be fixed by these commands)
- over 90% of BSOD's are caused by 3rd party (non-Windows) drivers. Less than 10% are caused by hardware, and less than 1% are caused by fully updated Windows installations

Here's my analysis of your minidump:

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.
Processor may be overclocked!
Expected Frequency: 2000
Actual Frequency: 2494
Overclock Ratio: 1.247

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I would also look at all drivers dated prior to the release of Win8.1 to see if they are compatible with Win8.1 This isn't real easy to do, but it may help you out. Please also note that the Windows driver werkernel.sys dates from August of 2013 - and the only way to update Windows drivers is through Windows Update.

Thanks for your thoughts. Based on what you wrote I decided to try a complete factory restore. The problem persisted after the restore (I used Lenovo's built in restore which completed erased the hard drive) so I'm convinced it was not being caused by software/drivers. That was yesterday.

Today the machine started to have trouble turning on. When powering on sometimes it would have the same problem I experienced when waking it from sleep (initially powering on for a half second or so before going dead, repeating in a loop). It got the point where it wouldn't boot anymore. Since it was under warranty I RMA'd it (which was easy since it wouldn't turn on) and am going to assume it was a hardware problem.

Now I just have to wait at least 1-2 weeks and hope they mail me back something that functions (I've read a lot of horror stories about Lenovo's support).

Thanks for your help and I'll report back if after whatever "repairs" they do the problem continues.
