Solved BSOD on Windows 8.1 with latest NVidia driver

Hi,

I recently updated my graphics card drivers from 327.23 to 331.58 (and later to 331.65).

With each of the 331.xx drivers I get freezes while browsing (using Chrome 30.0.1599.101 m) or playing games (e.g. Batman Arkham Origins). When the freeze occours everything stands still (youtube videos, gameplay, ...) and the system is not responding (keyboard, mouse). Waiting another 30 seconds triggers a BSOD "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION" to appear after which the system reboots. This is not reproducable and seems to occour at random times.

One thing I can say for sure is that the BSOD only occours with 331.xx drivers - going back to older ones makes it disappear.

I'm currently in contact with NVidia support which is not really helpful... they don't seem to inspect the dumps I send them and ask me about hardware (what psu are you using or if my cables are connected...).

I would highly appreciate if someone could help me out... :<

Christian

PS: Changing back to older drivers would solve the freezes but I want the newer drivers for the added functions they offer (Shadowplay, Gamestream to Shield, ...).

Sorry, forgot to mention my system specs:

CPU: Intel i7 3930K
RAM: 32 GB Corsair Vengeance 1600
GPU: 2x GTX Titan
HDD: 3x Samsung 830 SSDs
Sound: ASUS Xonar Essence STX
MB: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
OS: Windows 8.1

Things I've allready tried:

  • memtest86
  • Virus & malware scan (Microsoft Devender, Avast, AntiVir)
  • Deactivated all autostarts
  • Deactivated all unnecessary devices (USB ports, onboard sound, ...)
  • SLI activated and deactivated
  • completely clean driver install (uninstall, cleanup with Revo Uninstaller and reinstall)
  • scandisk on all drives

For starters:
At work we start all repairs with a set of diagnostics. Often they find problems that weren't even expected. It's a waste of time to try to fix software on a system that has hardware problems.
Please try these free diagnostics for starters: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Also, please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD. I usually can't see this info in the reports, so I rely on you to check it.
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to. If involved these should be visible in the memory dump - but it doesn't hurt to check manually.

Uninstall Corsair Link - it's known to cause BSOD's

I suspect video - either software, hardware or compatibility.

Update video drivers from Visual Computing Leadership from NVIDIA to the latest available, Win8.1 compatible version.
Try this troubleshooting guide: Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117 - Sysnative Forums
Perform these hardware diagnostics (especially the video tests): Hardware Diagnostics

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Unfortunately the driver updates didn't help :<
Turned the computer on today and got a freeze...

I uploaded a new zip with diag infos, hope this helps.

PS: I had to revert to NVidia driver 327.23 to take the diag infos. The crash occoured with driver 331.65 as usual.

You've gotta wonder if this is a problem with the nVidia drivers - keep your eye on the nVidia page for further updates.

Remove Silicone Labs USBXpress Development Kit
Remove Asus hardware monitoring utilities
Remove Asus Charger Driver

Update ASMedia 106x SATA Host Controller Drivers (asahci64.sys dates from Jan 2012) to the latest, Win8.1 compatible version. If you cannot locate an 8.1 version, please post back here.

Update C-Media audio drivers to the latest, Win8.1 compatible version.

If BSOD's continue after this, run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Please also run these hardware diagnostics (start with the video tests as this seems to be a video problem): Hardware Diagnostics

Hi, just thought I'd add I have the same problem across many machines, random screen freezes (audio can be still be heard playing) followed by DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION. All machines are dual Nvidia (mostly GTX 660) on 331.82 we're about to downgrade and see what happens; we have a single machines that do not crash which has older video drivers.

But thought you'd like to know your not alone!

I haven't got any lockups since 2 weeks.
Unfortunately I can't say for sure what solved it.

Here is what I've done:

  • complete wipe then reinstall Windows 8 / 8.1
  • updated all drivers to their latest versions (didn't help before, so I don't think thats the solution)
  • didn't install the following tools: Corsair Link, Asus AI Suite (I think these caused the problems)

To get the latest drivers for your complete system I can recommend tools like "Double Driver" or "Driver Genius".
You don't have to buy them - just let them scan for the latest drivers and search for the download link yourself.

While updating drivers I tried to avoid installing the complete software. I rather downloaded everything and then updated via device manager (source = download folder).

Hope that helps!

Problem 99% solved, Thx

Hey guys,

I've just registered to say thank you.
After trying most of the solutions offered on the internet, only finally deleting Asus pre-installed softwares fixed the issue. I was on the brink to RMA the comp (brand new, 1 day old), but that's when i decided to give it a final shot, then i unconvincedly applied the aforementioned solution.

I uninstalled those, then i reinstalled the mouse pad driver cause i needed it to use my pad properly (desacting the stupid touch-click is a bliss). PC worked fine. Than i installed back the Asus ATK, i was afraid this would trigger back the BSODs, but it didnt; i installed it cause i needed to be able to switch off/on the keyboard backlights, it worked suprinsingly fine. I installed before that the appropriate drivers so that i get the fn associated hotkeys back except keyboard backlight (ATK specifically trigers back the keyboard lights).

I had BSOD only while on battery, not while power supply wired.
99% fixed not 100% because unfortunately, the pc had a BSOD once, the same message, in several hours of use. Before that it would be after 5 to 10 minutes of utilisation, and it would BSOD when waking up from sleep.
Oh, almost forgot, i'm using the Asus N751JK-T4204H which has a GTX850m, with lastest drivers, that is, as of now, 344.88.

Best,

Unfortunately new BSOD since

I had two BSOD since my last message, so we had to RMA a few days ago because I didnt have time anymore to take care of the computer since it was not mine, i had to leave the town. I wish I had time to combine this solution with some others i've seen on the internet people say it worked for them. (for instance forcing the nvidia card off, It was 'on' all the time since I had read it's what fixed the pb for someone; but i've just read forcing the integrated GPU 'on' fixes it...).
