Solved Unpredictable shut down behavior

Guys,
I installed Win 8 Preview on my two PCs and laptop months ago. Recently, all of them started having shutting down problem. when shutting down there were notice that windows isn't properly shut down, need to restart, then restarted. Sometimes it just restarted when shut down without any notice. It is now getting tricky to shut down, I did some step like disconnecting the internet, terminating all working program (usually I don't). It works once, but not at the next. Is it due to some updates, or something else?
Please share if you have the same problem.

It sounds to me like something is maybe running in the background, I would suggest checking your start up programs (msconfig) firstly unchecking all that you do not need and if that doesn't help unchecking the rest, restarting each time until you find the culprit.
As it has recently started I would concentrate on the last installed programs.

I did suspect there is something on the background stalling the process. But dont know whether recently installed program or installed updates. I feel like suspecting the updates as that were the only same thing done on all three of my PCs and NB.
I'm pretty sure about it because those three rigs have different installed program according to its function.
My PC at the office only has Office 2010, ACDSee, Photoshop, Vuse, and some small utilities programs.
My NB also has minimal programs installed, as I only need it to run my presentation or teaching activities.
My home PC has a bit extensive because it has some games like PES 2012, MotoGP, NFS Hot Pursuit, and some more.

I planned to look over the updates and also the most similar programs installed on three PC.
Not thinking about viruses yet

I do not think it it is likely that this is caused by updates but I wouldn't rule out a virus you may want to scan with Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows and Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer both of which work with WDP

Deselecting start up programs will not harm your PC worst case a program may not run ie antivirus or wlan in which case you just have to re enable these programs.

It may be an idea to check your drivers are up to date, but I would be inclined to think this was not the problem due to the diversity of your PC's

I agree, considering updates make better. But could also be a case that the update interfering with certain program that becoming uncompatible with it..? As you suggest the AV program mostly don't do well with Win 8, so I stick with MSE and always have it updated. I already started with my Laptop by disconnecting it from the wireless modem before shutting it down. It worked once, but later the "Your PC run into a problem that windows can not handle. Need to restart" notification appeared (something like that). All driver are up to date so far (I work with 64-bit system). I found out that the driver of wireless modem was the only little bit incompat with the system (tricked it through the connection manajer, and left behind the native program from the modem), but it works. I reserve the system recovery as my last option on home PC as My son has some of his saved game to be backed up or he will throw a big yell at me

Just a point to note I am happy that WDP is working fine on my PC but I still get the occasional bluescreen, bear in mind some of your problems maybe down to WDP

If it happens again post the BSOD dump files. I cannot do much for you but some here certainly can !

i've noticed, that usually when i try to shut down my computer it will:

1) shut down as it should (about 10% chance)

2) show the 'shutting down' screen and returns back to the desktop (programs closed) and then when you shut it down again, it will do as 1) (75% chance)

3) shut down (either way as above) and turn off the displays, and stay on until the computer times it out.

Haven't been able to open the dump files (*.dmp). When I tried (twice) installing Windows Debugging Tools from Microsoft, the install process freezed. still thinking why....

I've found a way to fix the "chance of shut down failure" you just go to your control panel -> power management ->'select the power button action' and disable Hybrid Boot- problem solved

Very good except that Hybrid boot that is speeding up your PC start lol. I think you are better off living with the way WDP shuts down. The only reason you are getting problems with the shut down is because programs are still running, switch them off before you shut down ........... no problem

actually, i think that HybridBoot does not make that much as i thought, the real thing is msconfig.exe, that helps booting.
by disabling HB didn't make that big difference as i thought... only thing i discovered was shutdown behaivour

It seems to be driver-related: Try to install the latest chipset drivers for you motherboard from Intel. This helped me fix some bsod's some time ago.
I's not guaranteed to work since W8 Dev Prev. it's still pre-beta. You should get the Windows 7 drivers for your intel chipset. (It should be chipset 5 => for a first generation i5 - i3 processor and higher for later versions). Get the zip version and install manually with Device Manager within Windows. Usually check all system devices (pci bridges included) and your sata/ide devices. (intel usb drivers are also included).

Why not install the executable? Because it doesn't installs much in the first place (checked with Device Manager).

Here is my latest try.
All driver are up to date. I did uninstall some program, then closing down all active running, still it shut down unexpectedly.
I will continue to sort it out, while thinking is there something wrong with .Net framework 4.5?

If you didn' t find any viruses and the drivers are ok, then you can try disabling .Net 4.5 (Windows components).

My brother managed to install windows 8 on a pentium 3 with 512mb, and it had a lot of randomly blue screens but it was also usable (too slow in my opinion). But It's normal to see more blue screens than in a release version.

Have ruled out things..
Wonder why it still occurs. The same behavior to all three of my rigs.
The best way so far is letting it restart, then again, shut it down from login screen.

It still randomly "resistant" to shoot down. But I can live with that as hope is coming with the CP version.

I have a new shut down problem, just after the update. I've noticed, that my computer does not shut down anymore. when i turn it off, it shows the screen "Shutting down" after that the screen goes off, but the computer stays on, and in 5 seconds the login screen appears...

any ideas? what caused it? and does windows create a log what your computer does?

EDIT: the problems began after the update, i have recently bought a new motherboard and hard disc drives from a store (from the landmill) i have a clean os and i've changed a 500Gb HDDs to two 320 GB discs that are merged with Raid 0/Stripe
